At the time this song made quite an impression on me and I had only heard it the one time & only just now have I "revisited" 2 more times. A heartfelt, aching, poignant delivery that can only be delivered as sincerely as Hicks performs it. Not many like him in this world.
That's the night I went to the show and bought one of his harps. Dual purpose, invest in his career in my small way and garner strength unseen. No other harp player or otherwise has ever affected me the way he does. When he's sad he comes to me with a thousand smiles he gives to me free. Buttah flies and moonbeams, and fairytales all I ever talk about is ridin' with the wind. Hicks, take anything you want from me, anything....
I was there that night. Got my harp in the key of "E" and certif. Twas a great show. Still have my review (somewhere), a somewhat breathless account so I've been told. He seems more comfortable onstage now. More control over his musical vision. Went to Tarrytown show in Sept. Seasoned pro, and looks like he's content with the musical direction he's going in. He's got a major sense of humor, woodpecker song by opening act was hilarious, he definitely had a hand in that no doubt. Yer amazin!
I don't like his phrasing; sounds like he's rushed, or hurrying. Or like he's concentrating on the guitar too hard and not relaxing into what should be the smooth, contemplative pace of the song.
Lowell had it best, of course. Shaun Murphy does it right fine these days, too, though!
Listen to Jackson Browne's version of this song and you will realize what an amateur this guy is....but I still appreciate him doing the song of a great songwriter...
@znarf541 Yea, well, listen to the man who wrote it, if you want to hear how it's REALLY sung. Lowell, we miss you so much man. These wannabe's will never be anything like you. Peace. Peace.
Oh come on, this is a very good performance. I know Little Feat well, have seen them 4 times in concert, but never heard this song before Taylor sang it. I then listened to Lowell's version. I think TH has a better vocal than Lowell George, but it is LGs song so he had the advantage of claiming it his own. Preferences fall on the first version you hear. Give the guy credit for knowing good music. People who have never heard this song before now might look into Little Feat and Lowell George.
Exactly! "Oh come on, this is a very good performance. Give the guy credit for knowing good music. People who have never heard this song before now might look into Little Feat and Lowell George."
I thought this was a Taylor Hicks video. I've never heard of either Little Feat or Lowell George, and wouldn't have if Taylor hadn't done this song! Thanks Taylor for always introducing me to other artists. Great job.......
Wow! This version is soooo good. He should cover this on his next album, I was completely engaged in it. This is one of the best things I've heard him sing.
I have heard it! lol. That's why it was such a surprise. I don't even remember it being on an album for Little Feat, I think it was just recorded. So it was interesting to hear him pull it up from the dead practically. It doesn't really sound like the original but it's very very good.
Please check my channel, then. I have a section, "Little Feat", but I'll Favorite right now so you can see! Lowell never put it on a record, but recorded a rough draft; intending later to do it, but he died after a well-concealed OD here in D.C. in 1979.
Look for the "Last Record Album". Listen to the whole Album. It's a classic but little known these days. I would say it might be their best from that time. Lowell George was the man. Frank Zappa said it was so. Lowell played with Frank for about a year and a half.
NJ4Taylor........were you one of the people who called in to talk to Taylor yesterday on the Finebaum show? He said he'll be heading back your way soon!
I'm a hard-core Lowell George fan (heck I knew him!) and this song isn't easy vocally to evoke the feeling behind the words. Thus, I was really surprised to find Hick's voice to blend nicely here. I don't think he was giving it his ALL, but do believe with enough passion, & backup music he could seriously do it justice, even tho he can't rival Lowell. Nobody could do that.
Great tune, but I find this version a little lacking. Nowhere near the soul of Lowell George. And imho I think my guitar arrangement is better than this. But then again, he's up there and I'm toiling away. Props to him for at least plucking this tune out of relative obscurity and giving it a go.
I have a partial video of this song. We moved to the front for this encore and HE.WAS.AMAZING. Great guitar playing too. Thanks for posting this and ripping the heart out once again!
This boys concerts, he rocks, dances, plays, teases, tags,Pink Floyd Clapton, Run baby run, Medicated Goo, jazz, where this kid shines is the Blues, makes me cry, not even many of the oldest legends living or past can do that. His In your Time CD with his original blues. I never met him, dont work 4 him, one of these days I hope to shake his hand, he really touches my heart. So young to be singing blues. my hat is in my hands. real nice. play the blues Mr. Hicks.

Frankly I think this is awful. I'm agreeing with
blakexzappa - probably better to leave this song alone, because Lowell defined it. You want to listen to this .... go to the original !!
screamlate2 2 years ago
nothing beats the original. this doesn't even compare to it. no one should even attempt to sing a lowell george song, because it just cannot be done.

Taylor Hicks has such a powerful voice and presence. Can't believe it when great singers sing, and rude folks just keep on chatting!

You gotta hear the original, sung by the most original funk band called Little Feat, sung by Lowell George.
