  • Great scene but come on...if there wasn't a "card player in the bunch" as Mike says, then an excellent player should realize it's tough to bluff bad players...maybe one, but the whole table?

  • too bad he didn't have them reads at the wsop. i think george costanza and the goofy guy from 'raymond', and raymond himself made a deeper run. ...still, ya gotta love damon and norton.

  • LOL at people commenting at this. Putting aside the whole "reading" thing. The guy was bluffing a bunch of donkeys. SURE as hell that a donkey would fold 2 pairs against a pretentious kid(did the kid even looked at the cards?). Just for curiosity sake they would call. FFS this whole move is just retarded.

  • BEST SCENE EVER!

  • I disagee with the people commenting a hand read like this can't be done. You can tell what kind of hand they're trying to hit because it's a stud game. You're seeing part of their hand. And the rest is reading their reaction to the cards being dealt. You can tell from reaction whether they hit the card they were looking for and also from how they bet the hand. The pro poker players do this extremely well, that's why they're the best. I think this scene was very well done.

  • While it's still pretty unlikely that he could have read all the hands perfectly. It looks like they're playing 7 card stud rather than hold em so its much more plausible that he could guess everyone's hands.

  • lolololol wow, this movie is so way off in every detail.

    Just booooom SOUL-READAMENTS lol.

Sure. Just like that. You got this you got that and you know he got that and lol I bet you know? Yeah right.

Literally impossible, even if you've played with all the guys for 10ks of hands and they are huge tellboxes, you will never be able to put everyone on specific hands like that.

    Tripple-range-merge ftw imo.

  • check that scene out

    watch?v=QgwUihxHEA0

  • Hey....One player to a hand!

  • It's impossible to read the whole table like that .the best players in the world, like Negreanu, can read a opponents hand after playing with them for a long time. But to just walk in and read multiple player's hands...it's impossible

  • Only movie about poker approved by the pros, and for good reason.

  • most bullshit scene in the movie

  • The smartest thing he did? He said no to playing.

  • @Ko252 no to playing what poker? omg. thats ludicrous. i wouldnt know what to do if i wasnt in the game

  • @sneak108 You heard what he said early in the clip? Last time a professional player played with them, they ruined his life. So when the judge asked him to pull out a chair and play, he did the smart thing, and said no.

  • @Ko252 i just didnt understand what he meant. thx for the clarification

  • Well you can always play webcam poker and not worry about these rigged infested sites that are stealing your money. Ive been playing on pokerview! There is nothing like it I will never go back!!

  • There are actually some good poker lessons in this movie

  • For the people talking about hand ranges,,, this is a stud game. Wheren there are no community cards, but each player has public cards available to them only. If you have a very good memory, you can track all the cards which have been shown and folded and are out in the open. While you still have to be a virtuoso to do something like this, hand reading is slightly different then in Holden and hand ranges.

  • The 4 people who disliked this brought their legal careers to a crashing halt.

  • look like Carlsen, Magnus!! (Chess world)

  • Are they playing stud hi?

  • @stevesport1 Omaha

  • mike aint no kenny tran

  • I think this was an interesting movie scene, and I don't care to read this wall of text below me.

  • There's some dramatic license to every movie you watch. All for effect, and for the immedaite kind of effect. Now, if if he had been playing, he'd be scary as hell.

  • for ppl saying that it is possible to read hands ur right, it is possible. but the way damon's character does it here is ridiculous cuz he wasnt playing with these guys long enough to make such accurate reads. he wasnt even playing at all! he just walked in and guessed their exact hands. and i think thats the point of the movie. which is he's not just ur ordinary good player who makes good reads after playing with u. he can read any player by just looking at their reaction to the cards

  • That's a complete fantasy, nobody can get reads that accurate by "Looking" at the players. You can get a general idea of the types of hands they have, but putting people on an exact hand is NOT part of poker, you put people on a range of hands.

  • man if i can read people like damon just did i'd just play cards for a living. lol.

  • plus, remember, in 7-card stud, you have 4 'up' cards showing, so it's possible to read them easier than it is in hold 'em

  • yeah, k, but it makes a great movie scene

  • but thats why its a movie

  • You're not meant to get that exact two, that is usually impossible unless it's obvious. The point is to get a range of hands they could have.

  • OMG, you cannot narrow your opponent down to exactly Ace 10 you fool. He could have Ace Queen, 3 Jacks, 3 Queens, 3 Aces, or most likely a Busted STRAIGHT DRAW and he is selling you a a total bluff, depending on how YOU bet and how HE bet

you will determine the range of hands he could have.

Only a moron says, oh, if he doesn't have exactly Ace 10 I win, if he does I lose.

  • King10 suited, Ace Jack, Ace queen, 3 Jacks, 3 Queens, 3 Aces, Ace3 suited,

    ALL these hands beat you.

He could also be betting a busted straight draw ALL IN

Still want to only narrow him down to EXACTLY Ace 10, and then you can call?

THINK. You put players on a RANGE of possible hands not an exact hand.

  • Read poker books by skylanksy, 1: you almost never want to try and put someone on an exact hand, which is a complete mistake, as you are putting all your eggs in one dangerous basket.

On the River an opponent can easily have 5 or more hands that beat you. You have to calculate the odds that your hand beats a RANGE of hands he might have, not an exact hand.

Read online about HAND RANGES then come back.

  • No No No No

You have to think about the RANGE of hands that beat you, verses the likely hood he has one of those hands, based on how he BET and played the hand.

What if the guy had Ace Jack or Ace Queen

or King 10 suited? He could easily have those and bust you. You don't just think Ace 10 or Ace King. He could have a busted straight draw yet still bet you out of the pot.

Never ever go by one hand, unless that is the only hand on that board that beats you, which is usually never.

  • Skylansky IS the poker bible writer when it comes to poker, he invented most of the poker terms like Implied odds and pot odds. He wrote the fundemental theorem of poker which ALL top poker players adhere to.

Read up about Hand Ranges online NOW otherwise you are never going to improve.

  • Of couse he know what they are holding hes standing up behind them looking at all their cards

    lol

  • One player per hand...

  • LOL!!

  • haha he knos all dat but he dont play cards haha

  • exactly how!? gotta be odds estimations

  • 2:44 insane read! and he explained it woahow!

  • the music at the beginning gives the scene an interesting mood - "tuxedo junction" by erskine hawkins - and then the piano/bass leitmotif at the end of the scene ... cool cool

  • is it possible to tell what type of poker they're playing?

i guess it must be seven card stud

  • 5 card stud

  • thanks - that makes sense. awesome film

  • No it's not 5 card stud it's 7 card stud. In 5 card stud people can't see your hole cards. Matt Damon was able to say what everyone had because he could see the 4 cards that are exposed in 7 card stud.

  • thanks -

  • lol, that one guy is Carmela's dad on the Sopranos

  • Best line in the movie? "I can't. I don't play cards."

  • haha, brilliant.

  • stud right? isnt two pair usually good

  • two pair is third from the bottom on the order of hands in 5-card poker games.

nothing, or high card is lowest, followed by one pair and then two pair.

  • yeah i know the hand rankings, but in stud isnt two pair good usually

  • In my experience hand values actually go down in stud compard to hold'em. First time I ever played cash stud online I had 3 full houses in the first 4 hands and in one of them the other guy also had one.

  • That doesn't make much sense, that was luck at first. I mean how often does a full house show up with the river card? The odds are the same for a hand, with hold em you have more cards to get a hand with.

So yeah, with stud, 2 pair is usually a good hand.

  • Holdem and 7 card stud have the same amount of cards to make a hand.

And I'm just saying in my experience that's the case.... never said that means it's always true.

  • Ah, sorry, for some reason I was thinking 5 card stud. i've only ever played hold'em.

  • Judges with a lot of money but playin with plastic chips.....

  • Couldn't stand Damon's girlfriend in this movie. That subtle smug superior tone while ever so gently but ceaselessly nagging him. Good riddance.

  • yea, she needed a good rape

  • wat

    count me in

  • Id shit on her lawn out of spite.

  • @sansured yea gotta let those go. or live a life of unhappiness

  • Oh fuck off matt fucking damon.

He always takes these roles that make him some kid fucking genius.

He obviously has self-esteem problems and is compensating.

  • What? Good Will Hunting? You mean the movie he wrote. While he was at Harvard?

    Yeah, some self esteem problems.

  • good movie and all that but for a real poker player this is just ridiculous stuff here.lol.still only in the movies...

  • I love the judge's view on destiny in the scene where him and Danny are having a drink together.

  • is that on utube

  • haha that was awsome.. now makke it happen in real life .. lol

  • excellent movie, for all you poker buffs!!!

saved this as a favorite. thanks.

    blaze.

  • WTH are you talking about?

  • good kid, smart kid, and like everyone else in the movie

white kid :) not that that's bad!
