@MegaDaveMatthewsFan i think it was because there was no dislikes.. thought id be awkward and be the only one.. thats literally the only reason i can think of..
one of my best memories of NOLA is Papa Grows Funk live at The Maple Leaf ... funk telepathy. June was rocking the guitar, the leslie spinning, and the drums shuffling ...
hahaha i love how everytime i come back to this video there's just more and more comments ripping the "off key comment" dude. glad to see people still know what good, intellectual music is and wanna stand up for it, especially the DIRTY NOLA FUNK, keep this nasty jazz alive yall.
just practice hard constantly...seek out jam sessions in the nearest city and network with musicians WHO ARE BETTER than you so you can learn, and of course always learn new stuff and play with records. Learn some theory too.
oh my lord! the introduction part allmost made me cry! you guys got some serious SOUL in that! also the soundquality is fantastic... absolutely loving it!!!!
I didn't see the "off key" comment but whoever said it has no ear or understandingfor jazz. These guys are the shizznit. The sax player is serious funky. By the way, whoever made that comment should listen to some John Coltrane, esp. "My Favorite Things." It's off key but it's not; flat but it's not.
To anyone that can come on here and even speak in a negative way towards a band that bleeds funk the way they do has got to be so far from reality it's pathetic.
Saw these cats in NOLA, couldn't handle being there for more than one beer... Another one and I might have had to hang myself when I get home. Yeah, they're that good. :D
@bbrupbacher also i'm talking about the solo, i liked the funky chords he was playing in the background for the most part, just the latter part of the solo did not sound good to me. WANKER
hahaha, oh my bad. Let me take out all of the "pretentious" parts for you and just leave the facts. Despite whether you like it or not, his solo IS in key. Look up the chromatic scale and atonal jazz style soloing. And by the way, suggesting that the guitar player needs to "learn" to play in key implies that you know something that he doesn't. When in reality, he understands music far more than you (or I) do. In my opinion that makes you the wanker.
@bbrupbacher I'm not implying at all that i know something that he doesn't , but you can talk about chromatic scales and modes until the cow's come in, but if it doesn't sound good then your doing something wrong. i think YOU have obviously spent too much time with your head in a book and have missed the point that the most important thing is how it sounds and NOTHING else and it sounded terrible to me.
@Alimacca I'm not too sure if you're aware...but most of the greatest musicians played "out of key" as you call it (even though it was obviously in key) Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, and lots of guys from the bebop era did so much crazy stuff that may not sound "good" as you call it, similar to the way this guy used his chromatic scale at the end of his solo, but is good to others who have a true appreciation for music
@Alimacca Regardless of all the arguments you want to make, the point is to OTHER people it does sound good, to me it sounded great and the key is 100% fine, the bits you didn't like are known as dissonance and there are WHOLE OVERTURES written TO BE dissonant with loads of accidentals.
You are perfectly entitled to your opinion, however, a statement is not an opinion, you said he needs to learn to play in key, HE IS IN KEY.
If you don't like it fine, however, your STATEMENT was wrong.
i disliked this just so i could be the first, i love it really. haha

Bending the fundamentals of music, bouncing funky bops to the euphoric soulful bliss that jazz bleeds.. don't hate, dance.

I think he could have used a different key also!!! Sounded a bit flat! He is a player, but he picked the wrong key for that one!

Well it's not off key, but it's all cool. Jazz is all about appreciation and telling someone they are stupid takes away from that. PGF forever!
