Great review, although I really liked the 5 boroughs. I think it was very distinct in it's old school sound. The Beasties always used things like 808's and synths but on that album they shine. Letter to NYC is such a good song! Anyway, can't wait to check out more reviews.
One question - Is this white double LP a limited edition?
Agreed with everything said in the review, To the 5 Boroughs should never have happened, but I still have the album and Ch-Ch-Check It Out is the only good song from it. This album just leaps & bounds beyond what BBoys has done in the past, I think Paul's Botique was my favorite album but not anymore after this album.
i love the way you describe music in physicality. like these noises are things, actors, all playing a part--a ballet of, in the case of this album in particular, 300' tall robots and garbage men wearing orange boots, growing tentacles and serving deli sandwiches maybe, all in coordinated dance.
I wanna know something, anybody will do, What is Hip Hop? or Rap? I hear Drake blows, Lil Wayne made Hip Hop dead, Far East Movement makes wanna throw up, What is it basically how do yu know a good Rap/Hip Hop Song? any examples?
Very good review, you hit the nice points about the songs and pretty much say what I've been thinking. Even if you're not a fan of the beastie boys, this album should grow on you if given time.
Damn....This guy should go back and listen to " To the 5 Boroughs" and listen to the sweet lyrics the B-Boys kick. I guess people don't like it when the B-Boys reflect their political opinions on an album. I thought it was genius!!! Simple and pure beats also. Not some mess of noise like some of the newer stuff. True B-Boys fans I think would love the alum.
Nice review (The Beastie Boys are actually my favorite band of all time). I'm loving this album so far, it has some really amazing tracks on it. My least favorite though is actually Too Many Rappers, because it's a remix. The original was released on a single in 09' and it sounded much better. But whatever, it's good to see the Beasties picked up their instruments again for a rap album and not just an instrumental (Although I love the Mix-up).
To the 5 Boroughs was/IS an amazing fucking album! I cant even imagine why anyone would diss that record - the beastie's rhyming on that was off the hook; the beats totally fresh and content of the rapping was top notch. After Pauls Boutique and Check Your Head; its my favorite Beastie album.
Good review. I love this album and would have to agree with your points about Nas. Much as I like Nas and Too Many Rappers, it just never feels 'right' to me when a Beasties track features another rapper. Even the song on Ill Communication with Q-Tip, who I like as well. I just think the Beasties function so well as a unit and are such a well-oiled machine that bringing in a fourth emcee kind of throws off the flow of their rhymes and how well they play off of one another.
@ohcalcutta81 The song with Q-Tip , for me, made that album a lot better. Q-Tip can hang with the B-Boys any day and he made that song great for me because i'm a big fan of Q-Tip. To the 5 Boroughs is a great album. More true to old school for me. Don't know why it got dissed as not liked by many???
Awesome review...My only gripe is To The 5 Burroughs was about "Starkness" it wasn't that they weren't pushing themselves because they were being lazy-They made a creative choice-like they always do. It's very much their "Mantronix / early 80's future album"-a niche sound to be sure...but they don't care if they alienate people-They do their own thing. Seems like everybody is always hung up on their nostalgic fave Beastie Boys album. Meanwhile their off in another dimension..another dimension.
i heasr what the needle drop is saying about the 5 boroughs, i have major respect for the beastie boys doing that album its a love letter to new york, especially after the tragedy of 9/11.
favourite beastie albums in order, from the top: ill communication, pauls boutique, hellu nasty, licensed to ill, to the five boroughs then check your head. but who am i kidding they are all amazing.
@thetommyd237 Check your Head is by far the B-Boys BEST from beginning to end. Ill Communication was one of my least favorite. That's what is great about the Beastie Boys. There is something there for us all. Before I have an Opinion about Sauce 2 I will have to listen to it on a my stereo with the bass up very high!!! I guess this guy never gave To The 5 Boroughs a chance. I had to listen to it a few times before it grew on me though.
9/10? are you on crack or what? It's not the worst Beastie Boys record (the two last one were) but 9/10 it's over rated big time if you want my opinion!
I have never asked you to review an album before and I've watched all of your videos, but holy shit PLEASE review Death Grips Exmilitary album. I saw you liked the video of Beware so I know you know of it. Please. I can't ask enough.
Maybe TT5B wasn't as well-produced as it could have been - they had just come off a LONG stint with producer Mario C - though the many highlights sure as hell make up for it: Triple Trouble, Open Letter to NYC and of course Ch-Check It Out, just to name a few. Now it seems they've become accomplished producers as well as rappers and the name album is a testament to that. My least fav would have to be Licensed to Ill because I feel it lacks the substance of their later work. Great Vid
Beastie Boys......off I go to further familiarize myself with their catalogue, not that I never knew any of their music, I just never caught up....does Sabotage count?

beastie boys album 7/10 i understand there trying to get back into a Hello Nasty flow which i think they pulled off but i guess im not used to it.. im more of a Licsenced to ILL beastie boys guy, i mean i understand they wanna get at the futuristic flow but.. like a said im not used to the Hello nasty Vibe
I am so stoked for this. Beastie Boys are my favorite hip hop group of all time mainly for the reasons you stated, each album has its own distinct flava.
Absolutely LOVING the album and I love the Santogold track and the Lee Majors track. Detours are what the Beastie Boys are great at.
