@jktoooo actually, I heard it was the other way around. Rick James, who I like, was trying to keep up with Prince, which he couldn't possibly do. In 1980 Prince did "Dirty Mind" and started forming other band to keep up with his productivity.

Prince was the opening act on tour for Rick James (circa 1980) and stole the show before Rick could come out.This is how Prince met Vanity. This is where the tension began. There was no rivalry, Prince gave the best show. He also stole Rick's woman. Prince was already forming a girl's group. Once Vanity got with Prince, she became the lead of Vanity 6. The rest is history!

@paismoi rick dating vanity is news to me. Vanity's version (going from memory of interview I saw-can't site exact data-but would if I could) is that she met Prince backstage at some awards show. The version I'm familiar with is close to yours in that Prince opened for Rick, Prince stole the show, Rick was jealous of that and hence the RIVALRY. The whole who started their girls group first will probably always be up for debate with the fans.

actually to let everyone know...VANITY 6 was actually RICK JAMES idea,but he was too fucking stoned to get it off the ground before prince beat him to it! prince and rick james toured 2gether only once during the late 70's and they became arch rivals after that. i know....i was there and working the tour.

35 male here. I saw Mary Jane Girls, Vanity 6 & Apollonia 6 at a rare concert in Detroit all on the same night. YES Vanity 6 & Apollonia 6 the same night. Vanity did her thing with the 2 backup girls, and then the Apollonia came out and did her thing with the same 2 backup girls. There was an announcement that "Apollonia" was a new concept. WHATEVER THAT meant!!!!!!!!!!!!
