geez, these tiny fingers,,,,with a right hand classical guitar technique, thats why bass sounds so flimsy and out of balance... listen to black funk players..too hectic and nervous...."white"!
I wouldnt necessarily say its not the right bass for the song (or music) because if you watch jamiroquai live on abbey road do this song the bass player is using a P-Bass, and i think the tone is almost perfect. I'd say this video just has too much bass on it, you cant hear the highs too well. but everybodies entitled to their own opinion..
@WULFZERGE401 therefore i'd say for a p bass it's light ;) alder with maple neck, pretty thick one so the center of gravity is rather on the left hand side.
(in my opinion that's exactly how a p bass should be: nasty! ;)
Hehe yeah! Altough I think this bass is much more balanced than for example my thunderbird, which is much more prone to neck-dive, altough once you get used to it it's not a problem.
that's easy. if a groove is tight, it's "in the pocket". the more it grooves the deeper is the pocket ;-) and then again it's just a matter of taste if it grooves or if it has a "deep pockte", some people like machine-like perfect timings, I perfer a tight groove but with enough space for each musucian to improvise and express themselves. and the expression doesn't have to refer to bass or drum grooves. a band or drumer and bassist together can have a pretty deep pocket, too ;-)
I think that's a bass part, if you listen to the song you can hear that melody too. But the sound of it differs, i think it's on like a jazz bass with a pick or something and then the rest of the songs on a P-bass.
im wondering how you get such a bright and deep tone at once...i have a Lakland Duck Dunn signature (basically a p-bass) and it always just sounds growly and deep, i can never get both a good bottom end and bright high's
Much of the tone is in the amp and strings. Lakland makes excellent basses so i'm pretty sure that if you change the strings or try another amp you will get a totally different tone, and if you're lucky, maybe a nice tone too ;)
dumapies: Lakland Duck Dunn bass sound comes from the neck. You can hear it when you're playing without any amplifications, just acoustically. I have that bass too and the sound is a bit too muddy for me too.
I don't think its the pick-ups. I'm thinking of getting a new neck for it. :) A real jazz bass neck which is a bit thicker than the Duck Dunn one. That might do it: :)
Depends pretty much what kind of strings you use... Right now I have flats on it so the slap sound isn't exactly crisp but if you put like a pair of Stainless Steel rounds on it i think it would work perfectly for slap too.
The Strings are some D'Addario rounds, I wouldn't recommend bying them though because they sounded good for like a week but then they just died and sounded horrible. I Would recommend you to buy some Rotosund Swingbass rounds or Rotosound 77 flatwounds. The amp is a Hagström BT50, a 50 watt solid state amp made in Sweden.
Nice groove. Bravo!
