What an absolute genius! A totally gifted player with astounding pitch! I only came across him by chance when browsing through Richard Cook's Jazz Encyclopedia! I just had to investigate further; and I'm really glad that I did! I appreciate how metal bands like Korn use 7-strings, but Pizzarelli uses it to great effect! He has a certain sartorial elegance too - he would look better in a slim-jim tie - but has a personal style all of his own! He does a great version of You Got Rhythm too!
I was fully prepared to dislike this guy, but if he really just accurately sang every note in that solo as he played it then I'm going to go get of my lazy ass and start practicing.
@southrules It is his own custom made 7-string from a guy named Bill Moll from springfield MO. They are amazing instruments, I should know because I own one :P
@TheGlovv meh not sure about that, george van eps had a 7string gretsch back in the day that john pizzarelli's dad Bucky used to play on. multi string instruments go back as far as the lute. the late models had a ton of strings on them lol
@peterguit did you put LaBella flats on it? I personally don't like how they sound, but Bucky and Johnny get a great sound out of them. At least I think that's what I remember them using.
@pickinstone When Bucky records acoustic he puts bronze strings on his guitar I think. I put nickel round wounds on my Moll which brought the guitar to live much more. When playing amplified the tape wounds give a nice warm jazzy sound. And like John says; they're easy on the frets and easy on the fingers....
Skilled yes really skilled yes a virtuoso NO. Listen to Paco de lucia or Li Jie or master Segovia. If you do not know any of them search here on youtube. Paco has a perfect technic and can do anything he wants with a guitar. LI jie paganini is unbelievable to hear and segovia, well it's segovia a master in the classical repertoire. Another would be master Aniello desiderio., playing scarlatti. Listen to them and you will know what virtuoso menas
@gabrieloliveiramusic I agree. Although the players you mentioned have incredible technique and can be classified as virtuosos, we have to include John Pizzarelli in that category because he has an incredible command of the guitar. Those players mentioned such as Paco de lucia, I haven't seen them utilize chordal harmony and substitute changes like demonstrated here by John Pizzarelli while singing.
@HiggsPat Apples and oranges, can't compare them and why should you. Guitar can be played in a lot of styles, each has its masters. Enjoy them in their own right. There's a clip on YT of P.Gilbert playing what he calls 'flamingo', joking he can't play real flamenco (Paul is a nice guy). While arguably one of the best technically developed rock players of all time, he has a hard time controlling his right hand. Likewise Paco wouldn't be very great at rock or jazz guitar. Enjoy!
how can he chord all that stuff.... and... and!... sing at tha same time!... i quit.. i'm selling my guitars on ebay now!... i don't what tha fuck i was thinking! jeez!
@Hassenmusic jaja he just tried so hard for that talent, maybe he practices everyday! dont give up you can do it every musician struggles at first but once you get to the peak you are kind of through and basiclly its just based on practice
Initially I actually read "exploDing jazz guitar" and was a little disappointed when the guitar did not explode. But John Pizzarelli is still super awesome. Although an exploding guitar would make it even more so. ;)))
Yes ..Yes ..This guy is the whole package...and a full head of hair as well...at least I have a Joe Pass haircut...not that it helps all that much with my playing..!!

@peterguit He keeps it behind his middle finger. He just blows on his hand to get a better grip of the pick when he switches from finger picking to using a pick.
Is this Canadian or something?
