Nice. I imagine you could get some decent money selling toroids and spheres for this application. It looks as though your using your metal lathe as a spinning lathe too. Good idea. What rpm's are you running? I might make roller hand tools too though it looks as though your sheeps nose and duck bill works great. I'm gonna go make up some drawings and fire up the lathe.
Hi, great video, I'm about to make the mandrels for a 4"x13" toroid although I may make some smaller practice pieces first :-) BTW the links you post are coming up "Bandwidth exceeded" :-(
@panzuman It should be possible to make them from hardwood, but ive never tried this. You cant use it as much as a steel one, maybe a few times compared to the 100's of times with a steel mandrel.
@panzuman Steel is much stronger than aluminum, Im not sure if that is possible. At the very least you should use a bigger lathe and a sheet thinner than 1 mm.
@TeslaCommander I have. I have two mandrels made of hardwood. one is 10 inch the other is 6 inch. It works pretty good but definitely not as nice as your steel one. One suggestion is if you're going to use hardwood its best to buy hardwood planks sandwich them with glue and then make your Mandrel. I used a block of wood and it cracked after i had it made. I had to go back and fill the cracks and reshape it.
Wow, you're a fantastic machinist! All I did on a lathe was make a normal sized steel chess bishop in high school. :)
