  • If you like this, you'll LOVE "That's how heartaches are made" by Baby Washington. Her voice is absolutely sublime!

  • This is another one I like from Ms. Washington. She really has a style of her own. Does anyone know if she is still with us? I would love to know what she is doing now.

  • Thank you for the post. Baby Washington is one of my all time fav artists!!!

  • Me too. I love Baby Washington

  • Thanks for this beautiful song from my childhood. I still know all the words!!

  • A top five favorite of the Geator from Memories.

  • I heard this on an Oldies Station - thought it was Ronnie Spector. I think I can be forgiven for the error - its pure Spector and Ronnie S. EXCELLENT song,

  • What an extraordinarily beautiful song.......makes the spirit soar....

  • Hadn't visited your channel in a while, PJ. It was a pleasant surprise to find this Baby Washington tune, which I haven't heard since I was in grade school. I was also surprised to find that the arranger was Bert Keyes (correct spelling), who co-wrote the Moments' "Love On A Two-Way Street" with Sylvia Robinson.

  • @Meridian83West one of my favorates is Do Do Do Bah Ah by Bert Keyes

  • Beautiful! . . . always loved this. Thank You for generously posting this.

  • I've been looking for this song too!!!! Thanks for posting it!

  • The era for our music was ending but we didn't know it then. Sure there were hippies in 65, and Dylan, The Byrds, Rolling Stones but we still had The Jive Five "I'm A Happy Man" and The Marvelows singing I Do and The "Lovers Concerto" Toys.........AND THIS! Right at the end of the days of DooWop and real RnR. Six months later the radio stations weren't ALLOWED to play songs like this, it all went Dylan and friends but in the summer 65 we had Only Those In Love and it was a hit. STILL A HIT HERE

  • NICE!

  • Thank you for posting this beautiful song. We shall all have our chance to love and be in love. Thanks for posting this song again.

  • How beautiful is this song ! and nobody can sing it like Baby, Thanks so much for shearing it with us ! Baby 11***********

  • Another classic, Jerry Blavat still plays this on his radio show in Philly.

  • One of the many great songs from Baby Washington. I remember listening to this ballad on WDAS in Philly in the early 60s. Thanks for having the good taste to post it.

  • What a voice! And she sings this straight...no fancy voice gyrations characteristic of today's so-called female singers, Whitney included!

  • Ahhhh Remember that girl you held close dancing to this song at the Chez Vous Ball Room? Come on;.... close your eyes.... Now you are there.

Follow up with "Shy One".............Great stuff.............:-)

  • Oh my goodness... I have been looking for this song from this atist for a long long time. I am so glad to have found it while searching youtube during my break at work. We had this record when I was a kid in pennsylvania back in the 60's, and we did'nt even know who the artist was singing it. I thought it was Dinah Washington all these years, and I was searching sites to find it. I want to thank the person who posted this! My search has come to a happy ending!

  • I'm glad that you've been reunited with your long lost song

  • Back in the (this) day, they -- soul sisters with soulful voices -- came straight out of the church choirs. They were well-studied and disciplined in gospel, blues, pop, rhythm-&-blues, rock-&-roll, etc. Can't say that these days about Janet, Mary-J, Beyoncé, Lauren, Erika-Blaba-Doo, etc. And when they performed live, they didn't need to reproduce a live on-stage video with 55 dancers either! They didn't just "sing"... they "SANG"!!! You go, Miss Baby-Dub.

  • Amen to that. There are some great singers out now, but most don't have the background or knowledge the singers had being brought up in the 40s, 50s and 60s. You're right about a good amount of them coming from church.. That's where a lot of singers found their passion for singing, and some of the greatest R&B groups got their starts as Gospel groups

  • When I got my first copy of this song (about 1990 or thereabouts) it was on a cassette album. Played this for a girl I was dating (and her mom) -- her mom recognized it immediately and approved in my taste for music.

  • That's a really cool story

  • The girl I dated didn't care for it, though. A shame, really.

  • All I can say is thanks for posting

  • u have some boss tunes,thx mr.vespa

  • Thanks for the listen

  • 2;46 of pure vocal gold :)))

  • my all

    I would gladly give

for a chance to live in the world of love

    someone someone

    someone send the one

    that Im dreaming of

give my heart to be part

    of only those in love

    of only those in love

  • Thank you for sharing this song with us. It is just a good or let me say a great song to hear anytime. OH MY GOD send that someone who knows what love is all about and want to share it. SOMEONEEEEEEEEEEE, such a beautiful song and such a beautiful place to be.

  • I fell in love with this song when I first heard it in 1965 (?). It always brings tears to my eyes. If any one song can be used to define "soul," this is it. She's incredible.

Thanks so much for posting this.

  • Gosh, i just gotta listen to this great song again. It is just so good.

  • Always been one of my favorites.

    thanks for sharing

  • Gosh.. this song is so good. It's what genuine soul should sound like. A classic.

  • You're right. Even the backing track is soulful. This is human....This is soul

  • The songs tugs at my heart every time I hear it; however, when I look for the lyrics, I find that they don't always match what is being sung. For example, in the stanza where she begins "Jealously my eyes watch (some say "her little girl" but it sounds like she's say "the little dove" which would rhyme with the last line of the stanza. Am I the only one hearing this?

  • I've always heard that actually. I wonder if they ever released sheet music for this song.

  • They probably did. It may be out of print--but then with the resurgent interest in old R&B, there's no doubt a website somewhat that might have it!

  • Jealously my eyes

    watch the little dove,

    all day through,

    cooing to

    only those in love

  • Warrrenart,

    Many, many thanks!!

    debdessaso

  • I love her music.

  • She is fantastic!

  • 1966

  • Excellant Track Matey!!!..thanks...Ve

  • You're very welcome

  • Great voice and song, and also exceptional studio musicians in the backround.

  • Absolutely. This is an all around great track

  • Wow! Baby Washington."Only Those in Love". Now there is one I have'nt heard in a long long time.

  • It's a shame that it doesn't get the kind of play it should. What a good song

  • To everyone, "Baby" is still there, so if you see her in your neighborhood attend one of her shows. She deserves a following; old, youny, rich or poor, doesn't matter. Thanks PJ

  • PJ,

Baby is probably the most underrated R&B singer of her time. These songs actually give the Bacharach-David team a solid run for their money.

  • PJ-Agreed.Lot of great terrifically written/produced tunes in her canon.

  • I've found a few more rareties by her I'll be posting soon.

  • Absolutely devistating!

  • I agree.. A commonly overlooked Baby Washington track and it's one of her best.

  • Damn....this is so good it's scary. All soul, soul, soul, soul.

  • Baby Washington is great

  • But not in Philadelphia, where Harvey Holiday was always playing this on his Sunday night radio show on WDAS in the 70's and 80's; also

    a favorite of the Geator (Jerry Blavat); so no, it has NEVER been overlooked in my town;

it is very well known by the close and enduring followers of Soul. In fact, I'd venture to say it may very well have more airplays then any other of her records here,

even including That's How Heartaches Are Made.

  • PhillySouth, I think that you replied to my comment by mistake. PJ said that it was overlooked. But, as a native Philadelphian, I agree with you. I go back to Georgie Woods, Jimmy Bishop, and my old buddy Jocko Henderson playing this when it was new. Maybe in the other towns it didn't get the airplay?

  • Do you recall just what year this was from?

  • I'm not 100% sure... I'm thinking '61 or '62.

  • 1965 on the Sue Label 129

  • Actually its a traditional Rythmn n Blues sound! Or is it now being called deep soul?

It is soulful. And true many Soul singers sung ballads with this RnB signature.....but this style was popular in the early 50s' to early 60's before the Soul genre grew out of it. Just add backin vocals and it become Doo Wop! [Like your name!]

  • You're absolutely right... Simply it's R&B. Over the years so many sub categories have come around that I attempt to list my stuff with the now common categories to help people find what they like. If you go through my videos you'll see that there's a somewhat eclectic mix.

  • Oh, this is beautiful, nice pitter-patter lyrics and delivered with depth. I've heard just a few of her songs and so far, I enjoyed them. Thanks PJDooWop, great post...5-stars!

  • In the early and mid sixties Baby Washington was probably the premier solo female R&B singer. Her record label wasn't able to promote her properly. Her recordings have been sampled by many other artist. "Only those in Love" is one of her most soulful rendition. I do believe she is no longer with us, but her beautiful romantic music lives on. Thank You for post!

  • Baby's still around and she can SING! Look her up here - there are some videos of her singing Leave Me Alone recently.

  • Thanks PJDOOWOP for alerting me that Baby is STILL with us. Hope she knows how all of us feel about her recordings. We really treasure her music in Chicago........

  • Oh, Wow!!! I love her voice!!!!

I've never heard of Baby Washington.

And all I can say is...Baby's got GRIT!!!

  • I posted a few Baby Washington videos... check out Leave Me Alone and Nobody Cares.. A few more are coming this week.

  • Thanks sweetie. I haven't heard this one in years. From a very young age, The "Baby" (Jeanette) had a voice well beyond her years. I wonder how she's doing/

    T.

  • From what I hear she's doing well. I know she still has an amazing voice.. There are recent videos of her singing.

  • Very nice,.ktf.

  • nice one

  • love Baby Washington ktf
