This is another one I like from Ms. Washington. She really has a style of her own. Does anyone know if she is still with us? I would love to know what she is doing now.
I heard this on an Oldies Station - thought it was Ronnie Spector. I think I can be forgiven for the error - its pure Spector and Ronnie S. EXCELLENT song,
Hadn't visited your channel in a while, PJ. It was a pleasant surprise to find this Baby Washington tune, which I haven't heard since I was in grade school. I was also surprised to find that the arranger was Bert Keyes (correct spelling), who co-wrote the Moments' "Love On A Two-Way Street" with Sylvia Robinson.
The era for our music was ending but we didn't know it then. Sure there were hippies in 65, and Dylan, The Byrds, Rolling Stones but we still had The Jive Five "I'm A Happy Man" and The Marvelows singing I Do and The "Lovers Concerto" Toys.........AND THIS! Right at the end of the days of DooWop and real RnR. Six months later the radio stations weren't ALLOWED to play songs like this, it all went Dylan and friends but in the summer 65 we had Only Those In Love and it was a hit. STILL A HIT HERE
One of the many great songs from Baby Washington. I remember listening to this ballad on WDAS in Philly in the early 60s. Thanks for having the good taste to post it.
Oh my goodness... I have been looking for this song from this atist for a long long time. I am so glad to have found it while searching youtube during my break at work. We had this record when I was a kid in pennsylvania back in the 60's, and we did'nt even know who the artist was singing it. I thought it was Dinah Washington all these years, and I was searching sites to find it. I want to thank the person who posted this! My search has come to a happy ending!
Back in the (this) day, they -- soul sisters with soulful voices -- came straight out of the church choirs. They were well-studied and disciplined in gospel, blues, pop, rhythm-&-blues, rock-&-roll, etc. Can't say that these days about Janet, Mary-J, Beyoncé, Lauren, Erika-Blaba-Doo, etc. And when they performed live, they didn't need to reproduce a live on-stage video with 55 dancers either! They didn't just "sing"... they "SANG"!!! You go, Miss Baby-Dub.
Amen to that. There are some great singers out now, but most don't have the background or knowledge the singers had being brought up in the 40s, 50s and 60s. You're right about a good amount of them coming from church.. That's where a lot of singers found their passion for singing, and some of the greatest R&B groups got their starts as Gospel groups
When I got my first copy of this song (about 1990 or thereabouts) it was on a cassette album. Played this for a girl I was dating (and her mom) -- her mom recognized it immediately and approved in my taste for music.
Thank you for sharing this song with us. It is just a good or let me say a great song to hear anytime. OH MY GOD send that someone who knows what love is all about and want to share it. SOMEONEEEEEEEEEEE, such a beautiful song and such a beautiful place to be.
I fell in love with this song when I first heard it in 1965 (?). It always brings tears to my eyes. If any one song can be used to define "soul," this is it. She's incredible.
The songs tugs at my heart every time I hear it; however, when I look for the lyrics, I find that they don't always match what is being sung. For example, in the stanza where she begins "Jealously my eyes watch (some say "her little girl" but it sounds like she's say "the little dove" which would rhyme with the last line of the stanza. Am I the only one hearing this?
To everyone, "Baby" is still there, so if you see her in your neighborhood attend one of her shows. She deserves a following; old, youny, rich or poor, doesn't matter. Thanks PJ
But not in Philadelphia, where Harvey Holiday was always playing this on his Sunday night radio show on WDAS in the 70's and 80's; also
a favorite of the Geator (Jerry Blavat); so no, it has NEVER been overlooked in my town;
it is very well known by the close and enduring followers of Soul. In fact, I'd venture to say it may very well have more airplays then any other of her records here,
PhillySouth, I think that you replied to my comment by mistake. PJ said that it was overlooked. But, as a native Philadelphian, I agree with you. I go back to Georgie Woods, Jimmy Bishop, and my old buddy Jocko Henderson playing this when it was new. Maybe in the other towns it didn't get the airplay?
Actually its a traditional Rythmn n Blues sound! Or is it now being called deep soul?
It is soulful. And true many Soul singers sung ballads with this RnB signature.....but this style was popular in the early 50s' to early 60's before the Soul genre grew out of it. Just add backin vocals and it become Doo Wop! [Like your name!]
You're absolutely right... Simply it's R&B. Over the years so many sub categories have come around that I attempt to list my stuff with the now common categories to help people find what they like. If you go through my videos you'll see that there's a somewhat eclectic mix.
Oh, this is beautiful, nice pitter-patter lyrics and delivered with depth. I've heard just a few of her songs and so far, I enjoyed them. Thanks PJDooWop, great post...5-stars!
In the early and mid sixties Baby Washington was probably the premier solo female R&B singer. Her record label wasn't able to promote her properly. Her recordings have been sampled by many other artist. "Only those in Love" is one of her most soulful rendition. I do believe she is no longer with us, but her beautiful romantic music lives on. Thank You for post!
Thanks PJDOOWOP for alerting me that Baby is STILL with us. Hope she knows how all of us feel about her recordings. We really treasure her music in Chicago........
Thanks sweetie. I haven't heard this one in years. From a very young age, The "Baby" (Jeanette) had a voice well beyond her years. I wonder how she's doing/
If you like this, you'll LOVE "That's how heartaches are made" by Baby Washington. Her voice is absolutely sublime!

What a voice! And she sings this straight...no fancy voice gyrations characteristic of today's so-called female singers, Whitney included!

Baby is probably the most underrated R&B singer of her time. These songs actually give the Bacharach-David team a solid run for their money.
