If you are considering modular or prefab home, building with recycled shipping containers is worth taking a look at.
Good resource is the Residential Shipping Container Primer website. A SHOWCASE OF SHIPPING CONTAINER HOMES AND BUILDINGDS, AND A DO IT YOURSELF (DIY) REFERENCE FOR CONVERTING RECYCLED INTERMODAL CARGO SHIPPING CONTAINERS INTO BUILDINGS AND ARCHITECTURE.
Lots of great example buildings, details, facts, and links to other articles...
Remember this in an earthquake their home would be the only one still standing. These containers are made to take 100's of thousands of pounds of load on them. Lock them together and those 12" beams I see will hold up in an earthquake.
FROM CTV CHANNEL-new style of house: shipping container company video with an awesome full house has been made. See the advantage to use a shipping container as a house, check out our channel to see it!
I'm definitely gonna do this some day. I'd probably convert a single container, then add on as I see fit. That's the great thing about this idea, adding on would be a hell of a lot more simple than with a regular home.
Zoning approvals are no longer a big issue since our ISBU Association got involved. Most cities and counties are more interested in their resistance to tornadoes, hurricanes, and earthquakes.
The shipping container (ISBU) based construction is booming and becoming very accepted in the U.S. and globally.
With the use of Ceramic Insulation paint the are extremely energy efficient.
Also using them as BizPods such as Coffee shops is a rapidly growing trend.
The problem is that once there is more demand for these kind of homes, and more contractors realize that this business is "booming", the costs of building/buying these types of homes will go up, and so will the taxes. The purpose of having a home like this will be completely invalidated. At the end of the day, businesses, real estate, and the tax man always find a way to get their grubby little hands into your wallet.
@MCArchangel777 taxes really is on the land you have. If you buy land in an expensive neighborhood, yeah your taxes will be high. If you have land in rural areas or less expensive areas, then the taxes will be cheaper. The main cost to home ownership are the mortgages, and if they are high, then that is a big burden. You can't raise the price on old shipping containers anytime soon. There are far too many of them sitting around and being a huge clutter. They need to move those.
I work in construction. A flat bed tipper truck is the most cost effective way of moving them. About $120-$150 per container within afew hours of pick-up and drop off. Crane hire to stack them neatly can be pricey, about $500 for 1/2 day. You can stack these in no time. If there is a crane place working near by it is cheaper to approach the driver and get him to do it for cash on the way back to the depo.

I was contemplating the idea before. The Chinese are the pioneers. I am very interested in it. How about the desert, would it be a good idea to build one there?
people the idea behind all this is that you can do it yourself, its simple. think about it. containers usually cost around 1500-3500 dollars. i agree that it is the only way to go, especially if you are young. they are a great investment. i will be building one myself. there are so many possiblites in building these houses, its trully one of the most spectacular opprtunities to be apart of in todays world.

Awesome that the city approved that. Most cities in ca would not allow that, at least not for regular homeowners.

Build an earthship instead. Unless you have a source of free shipping containers, like most of us.

I was trying to be funny, ^_^.
They must be expensive though to buy?

Ok, sorry - cost doesn't seen too bad, however, moving them (and paying for that) could get pricey - anyone have any cost for this?
