sometimes the most talented and origanl artist scare the shit out of the powers that be...david made um all run for the out house.....i bought anything i could with his name on it..never disapointed
I saw David many times in the 1980's in the New York area and it was always very enjoyable and fun. I always found his voice very pleasant if not technically that great.
his guitar playing ain't bad? he's one of the best pickers around! I saw the David Bromberg Band in Brussels, but that's a long time ago, late 70's. I don't think he crosses over to Europe nowadays.
I'm with you on that -- but verse 4 wasn't 'added in' -- it's in the original song. Just seems most covers of it leave this verse out. And I'm guessing it's because the way it sounds in all the recordings I've heard that include it, are hard to make any sense of. This one (David's) finally makes perfect sense. Namely, the 2nd line usually comes up as, "For the mem'ries are what we have them for." Like, huh?? Other covers: Nanci Griffith; Chesapeake (Mike Auldridge's successor to Seldom Scene).
I've NEVER heard an Ian version with this verse (he especially did not do on his tribute special vids on here [the ones which had Emmylou, Gordie, Sylvia, etc.]).
Can you direct me to ANY original Ian Tyson (studio or otherwise) versions which include this verse??
You bring up a good point, because I'm having a hard time recalling how I got the lyrics in the first place, or even how long ago. But putting that mystery aside, I have run across:
then click on "tracks" (280, 50/page). No. 47 is Summer Wages from the Long Long Time album, which is missing verse 4; no. 59 is the song from the So Much for Dreaming album, which DOES have it.
I forgot David did this song! I found it looking for Ian & Sylvia's version. He sounds a bit drunk on this one though, I've heard David do better. But he is classic.
favorite bromberg song is Dehlia, too bad not on youtube. going to see him tonight, maybe he'll play it...

Well, now that I listen again, his voice is fine, quite good in fact, it's just a poor interpretation of an excellent song.

bloody poor singing.

Funny how a guy singing "poorly" can sell out shows 30 - 35 years later. Anyone seen Shaun Cassidy lately?? He could sing.
Talent shines through and lasts while the pretenders comne and go. Play on Dave B!

Yeah, there's no accounting for what people like. Still poor singing though.

I just caught Dave two weeks ago, and he did this song (one of my faves from Ian Tyson!).\
I especially like the verse he adds in,
"Ah, she's a woman so fine I might never try to find her,
for good memories of what we had before should never be changed,
for they're all that I'll take with me."
He 'got to me' with that line/verse, since I can "relate" with my current situation.
GREAT song!!
I love ALL versions, even though Dave's is a little more 'soulful' than Ian's smoother one.

Even though my regard for Ian Tyson is unparalleled I like Davids renditions of this song the best. So glad to find this five star favorite here!
Thanks for posting.

Summer Wages (Ian Tyson)
Never hit 17 when you play against the dealer
For you know that the odds won't ride with you
And never leave your woman alone when your friends are out to steal her
Years are gambled and lost like summer wages.

And we'll keep rollin' on 'til we get to Vancouver
And the woman that I love who's living there
It's been 6 long months and more since I've seen her
She may be gambled and gone like summer wages.
And all the beer parlors all down along Main Street
The dreams of the seasons are all spilled down on the floor
All the big stands of timber just waiting for falling
And the hustlers sitting watchfully as they wait there by the door.

So I'll work on the towboats in my slippery city shoes
Which I swore I would never do again
Through the worst fogbound straits where the cedars stand watching
I'll be far off and gone like summer wages.
Ah, she's a woman so fine I may never try to find her
For good memories of what we had before
They should never be changed for they're all that I'll take with me
Now I've gambled and lost my summer wages.
Years are gambled and lost like summer wages.
