KEB013, I do pay $10 for an office visit and $50 or 100 for an ER visit depending if I am admitted. As to why there is a copay... People are more resonsible if they pay a portion. I have friends that use government assistance and because You and I pay for thier services, they use the ER for everything. If they had to pay more for ER, then maybe they would be a little more frugal. Maybe they would be more likey to schedule an appointment, like I do since I pay a portion.

My husband's aunt lives in the UK and she had to wait 1-1/2 years for a hip replacement - she was confined to a wheel chair before she could get into surgery. My daughter-in-law is from Canada and her sister was injured in a skiing accident in March - she can't walk yet she isn't scheduled for surgery until the end of August. The paperwork would be minimal with public healthcare. VA/Medicare work fine. These are government run.If all doctors were paid to keep people well, instead of getting paid by the procedures , it would be even more cost saving. This is what Gr.Britain, Canada, Germany, Norway, Sweden etc., do and their countries are rated a lot healthier than ours. Even children's death rate is a lot lower in 3rd world countries compared to ours.

Why do I say tha?, Because I talked to Doctor's in Mexico City and they have informed that all Americans are being charged 3 to 4 times much more than what what other countries charge for similar treatments. Hordes of Canadians cross the border annually to seek medical treatment which they either cannot get in Canada due to their age, or that the waiting list is too long. For instance,prostate cancer survivability in the US is 98% versus 74% in the UK. During the long wait for treatment, many cases become too far advanced to cure. Visit any ER in the US. Why here instead of MEX?

I'm not a doctor or a politician... I am a plumber. I can't speak on health care in countries around the world. I can only speak on my own experience and I have had outstanding care everytime I have needed it. My family doctor works more hours in a week than anyone I know. My local hospital is filled with people, yet when I had an emergency, on a Saturday afternoon, they were there, working. When I had to return on Sunday, they were there, working. My heath care is great!

Some how I find it hard to trust Doctors in a country where many of their residents come across the border so they can earn more than $5/day. Go to Canada for treatment?!? I took her to emergency at local hospital, I just got the bills and and now I have a debt of over $1,000.00 dollars. medicare is a government run system and so are the Vet hospitals. By and large they do a pretty good job. The system in France is government run and they get better care than us.

You are so proud of Social Security, yet it is constantly in need of more dollars just to remain solvent and as an investment, it performs poorly. Medicare is the same situation since it must impose limitations on care and cost of care to the point that many with it have trouble finding a doctor & need to subscribe to supplemental insurance to fill the gaps. You mentioned previously the postal service. The stamp you buy doesn't pay for delivery, taxes do. The postal service is not profitable.

Health care reform might be complicated but the reason for it is not: compared to other industrialized countries, Americans pay nearly twice as much per person for health care. BUT the results are second-rate. The U.S. is ranked #33 (from the top) in infant mortality - behind Slovenia, Cuba and Cyrpus. We are #45 in life expectancy! The status quo is not ok. Ignoring the problem would be un-American. And I am done sending my money to the insurance industry. Maybe uncle Sam can do better.

Mr. Price admits that changes are needed. He has even offered to work on change. What he (and I) are not in favor of is a goverment takeover of the health care industry. What other industry can the government conrol? How about making cars... Wait a minute, they do that now.

Realize that the VA is government run healthcare, so is Medicare and it is one of the best for senior's up til now, since the system is now being borrowed against, just like Soc.Sec trust fund. Gov't run healthcare would cut down on costs, paperwork  etc. Insurance co's profits have risen by over 400% in 7 yrs., mostly due to CEO's pay. Plus they deny claims at an amazing rate, incl. for existing illness problems.

delicado20, I'm not disputing your figures, but I am confused by what you have written. Did you mean to say that insurance premiums have risen 400%?? If you really meant that profits have risen 400% because of CEO's pay, then that seems to be impossible since paying more in salary would reduce profit rather than raise it. Please clarify so that I can understand what you are saying.

Thank You Mr Price. Those I talk with do not want this bill. We Seniors are very upset. I don't understand why this bill is not read in full before voting by all members of Congress. Will Congress sigh up for this plan? If it's good enough for us why not them! Let us vote !!

No matter what your political party affiliation, you need to listen to what this doctor has to say. He has experienced the problems inherent to our current health care delivery system. He KNOWS what is proposed will only make the problems worse. To give you an idea of what it would be like, think of the availability of health care to residents of New Orleans post-Katrina and we still haven't reached an agreement on a replacement hospital for Charity Hospital.
