As a young pianist this arrangement found me totally by accident and rearranged everything I ever thought about rhythm and harmony. This is my desert island essential track. It's safe to say that my love of jazz came from three places, this track, Art Tatums Cherokee and Oscars live recording of Tenderly. Damn. This still kills me.
That little recurring progression that kicks in the tune 0:40-0:49 (also a bridge between bass and key solos, and closes out the tune) is just perfect, perfect Jazz! It needs nothing added, changed or removed. Pure brilliance!
Reminds me of the days when we could trick or treat nearly all night, experience adventures, and still make it back home without parental involvement. Those days are gone forever, but the music will always be with us.
@evilTano it is written by guaraldi, played by chick corea (piano) john patitucci (upright bass) and al foster (drums), from the 1987 album "Happy Anniversary, Charlie Brown!"
@sickboy3883 Oh Thanks! I've few CD of Vince Guaraldi and i love him! I will try to find "Happy Anniversary, Charlie Brown!". Another cool The Great Pumpkin Waltz interpretation is from George Winston, but i can't find it on Youtube :(. I just listen it on "Lucy and Linus".
What I love about this arrangement and performance is that it doesn't evoke Guaraldi as much as it does the classic Bill Evans Trio (Evans, LoFaro, Motian). Great job by Chick and group with this one.
@splicernyc you are spot on! Great musical intuitiveness. Of course Bill Evans was so influential it is obvious that Chick was heavily influenced by him. Absolutely beautiful interpretation, my favorite.
Yep. This has always been my favorite jazz song. It kinda makes me see autumn in a beautiful, vivid, nostalgic, rainy but touchy, thankful and strongly escapistik way. I see grey and yellow colors.
This is one of the rare tunes where I like someone else's arrangement / performance better than Guaraldi's. Corea really brings out the descending and ascending chords, which I think Vince intended to reflect Linus Van Pelt's falling and rising emotions. A terrific performance of a terrific jazz waltz.
so i could pretty much listen to this all year round.... it just started to turn that way in the air and i thought id search for it again, but i mean.... this is just music at its finest.
@gomclarengo This version appears on the CD 'Happy Anniversary Charlie Brown'. The sheet music for the CD includes the great intro that everyone else does not play. I can play it, when I get my piano tuned, I'll post a vid.
@SteveG1963 I appreciate it very much. I have the CD but do you know can I get the sheet music for the CD? I can't seem to find it anywhere online. Looking forward to your video. This song is by far my favorite from Chick Corea and the Happy Anniversary Charlie Brown CD.
Seeing him April 1st at the Berks Jazz Fest! Soooooo excited!

Were it not associated with "Peanuts", this composition and arrangement would be a jazz standard.

its ok--the tender melody is lost in too much jazz, though
windstorm1000 3 months ago
@windstorm1000 But the tender melody IS the jazz though surely. Perhaps it's just me.

Now that's how you sway 3 quarter time in jazz (accent on 2)... 1:53- 2:05
Chick is the man. No fast runs here (fusion daze), just great interpretation.
