Honestly, I think this is one of the worst productions (if not THE worst) that I've ever been a part of. I'm acting as Oglethorpe for my college and the only saving grace for me for this play is just the sole opportunity to act. But the play itself is awful! Literally, songs are placed in there to just take up time. The plot (what little there is) is weak and has the audience invest in characters that they have no interest in in the first place. Smoke on the Mountain is a poorly writen play
@garyGjenkins So sorry to hear about your production! The way to make it work is with really good musicians and play it way over the top hokey. We had an awesome bluegrass band behind us and everyone in the cast was very talented. I hope your show went well
@RockstarSissy The author actually said to play the characters naturally, which I found ridiculous and apparently so did you guys. So, we obviously had to add a lot of little gimmicks and actions and had to exaggerate our characters (mine allowed for that especially). Overall, it turned out well and it was a fun show, but I still hold my qualms about the writing being absolutely awful. At least it wasn't as bad as I thought it would turn out. In fact, we got a show out of it! :)
@garyGjenkins Good luck with you're career. You have a lot to learn about this business if you think this show is a poorly written play and should be done against the writer's wishes. It isn't a success all over the country for being a poorly written play with over the top characters.
@BeltinBronco I believe that just because something is popular with most audiences, whether it be a novel, play, or movie, doesn't mean it is necessarily good. But seriously, I'm not saying this to be snotty or anything, but could you really tell me exactly *how* this play is good or nuanced? I really felt when I did this, despite having a good time with the character, that it was just Baptist propaganda; that the play was writen for the songs when it should have been the other way around.
Great! I wish there was youtube when I played June! Excellent job, but I wish you had included the monologue! I would love to have seen your interpretation!.....
for the record, it says at the front of the script, that 'they arent southern caricatures, or religious bafoons, they are real people.'

This comment has received too many negative votes show
There's a backup band? Isn't it kinda the novelty of the show that the cast...nevermind...it seems like everyone had a really great time.

If only I could be a June like that! Our director took a whole different take on the play...its not nearly as entertaining sadly. Great job though!!!
