Come on dudes, Flea is obviously conscient of what he becomes these days. Since Frusciante's return (and leaving again), they're falling deep into shitty pop-rock stuff. One Hot Minute was their last exciting record, Navarro their last great guitarist.

@meatcurtinman I never said that they should've kept playing their old stuff, but there's many ways to evolve, and One Hot Minute was a good one, not Californication, which is a classic pop rock album. Boring. Many musicians managed to remain interesting, not the Peppers. Just go listen to John Zorn or Patton stuff (before you say anything about my mind). You don't have to play the rudeboy behind your screen, it was just my opinion.

A band can play pop-type music as long as they maintain artistic integrity and soul, which the Chilis ALWAYS have...besides most of the songs off of their recent albums are still not marketable singles because they are not pop. You could say any artist is pop if they have a lot of singles, but it may no be true

They used to dig the funk in a punk (almost hardcore) way, and that was unique! Just check the side project Hate with Frusciante, Flea, a good drummer and Angelo Moore from Fishbone, that was the scene they had a place in. I think they're now playing easy tunes with not a bit of sincerity towards funk music, repeating their old stuff again and again.

Just listen to the single from mother's milk and compare it with Dani California, there's nothing in common. flea explained the pop context himself: RHCP don't play free-form jazz, they have a song structure including chord progressions, verses, choruses and bridges. meaning if they are going to have that structure then he is going to dance around it in whatever way relates to the song. they made songs with structures back in the day and approach songs with the same mentality to this day. theyre still truly original. they just make new forms of music, which is a huge accomplishment and I applaud them

Even in the earliest days, they had catchy pop funkness right there with all the rawness...I'm amazed at each member's evolution to the jamming pop band they are today. Remember, the word pop used to mean something of quality.
