  • get romola garai and jeremy northam best emma ever! romolas great in the hour!

  • I would love Drew Barrymore for the role of Emma!!! Drew was so beautiful in the movie Ever After!!!

  • Comment removed

  • emocionante so falta ser legendado para o brasil

e tem que ser deste ano de 1996.por favor

  • I love this version and i think the actors fit perfectly- i'm in love with jeremy northam,he's exactly like i've pictured him to be :D Although,at first i thought that gwyneth wasn't the right choice to play emma, but now i see i was wrong ^^

  • @LadeyYuna This is the BEST version of Emma with 1 exception: Gwyneth. If I could take her off the screen and put Kate Beckinsale, this film would be ABSOLUTELY PERFECT :)

  • @msinvincible2000 Gwyneth ruins it! So true! I like better the 2009 with Romola Garai she makes it perfectly. :)

  • Join PERIOD ROMANCE MOVIES on facebook!! :)

  • oh my gosh, i would love to marry mr knightley!

  • awww what an awkwardly beautiful walk <333

  • If I were Emma and Mr. Knightley asked me to marry him, I'd do more than kiss him. We'd be there all night! ;) Thumbs up if you agree.

  • is ever possible to get bored watching all this exquisite movies?to try to get better if you can?thankx sara230,you're the best!

  • The way he hesitates before kissing her ♥

  • oh, the way he say: Marry me? I wish someone will ever say that to me!!

  • aww itsjust like my stepdad he rode nonstop 9like not even a bathroom break) from georgia to new orleans 2 propose to my mom during mardi gras so sweet!

  • ...And that is how one asks a woman to marry them. Take a leaf out of Knightley's book, boys.

  • emma: "and how are you? *frown* happy?" the look she gave was one saying "if you're happy, then i will kill you"

  • emma looked so googley eyed~ but who could blame her??<3

  • Wow, Mr. Knightley has the best "I rode through the rain" hair ever!

  • The kiss is the best!

  • I don't think we should keep daisies in the garden, they really are a drab little flower. lol

  • The best part of this version is the scene where he says, "Twas badly done, Emma, badly done."

  • Oh dear! ... i mean the vension stew

  • When you are at 7:03 go to 6:50!! Change of Hair!! I usually don't notice these things but oh well.. I still love him though! :D

  • "..i rode through the rain.. id ride through worse than that, if i could just hear your voice telling me that i might at least have some chance to win you.." =) <3 that line

  • This is my favourite Emma proposal scene. Even better than the one from 2006. This Mr. Knightley is perfect for his character. This one is absolutely best.

  • @Jeno404 lmao! I notice that too! At the very begining of the movie I said "huh he has very nice hair, thick and full" lol

  • jeremy norton is sexy

  • Mr.Knightley...come into my life...and bring all the REAL MEN of your time period with you. This scene is actually heart-melting.

  • Love it, love it, love it. The way he looked at her and his smiled before he kissed her ahhh, just milted my heart.

  • Mr Knightly has epic hair, seriously, such volume.

  • @Jeno404 This made me LOL hahahaha so true though!!!

  • @Jeno404 EPIC hair?!...XD

  • Thumbs up if you had to watch the last scene in this clip more than once!! lol

  • LOVE that smile right before he kisses her... this scene makes me melt EVERY time. I turn to putty! Where have all the REAL MEN GONE?!?!?!

  • WOW do they take a lot of liberties with the script. They pretty much made up 90% of that proposal.

  • they picked a fine time to become awkward with one another!

  • I love Gwyneth Paltrow! Always have! I could care less if she is the best Emma because she is definitely one great actress and for me worth watching in anything!

  • 14 people prefer Mr. Elton

  • Loved the part when Emma was asking God for Mr. Knightley to stay single forever if she can't have him. She's s selfish. But that's what makes her so adorable. :)

  • I think she makes a very good emma. Very ladylike and cultured which is appropriate to her character. I loved the rapport between Johnny Lee Miller and Romola Garai in the recent version but Gywenth Paltrow has way more natural elegence. Romola played the role very well but she still had that country thing happening that just didn't gell with the book. I like both actresses for different reasons. But I think Gywenth is closer to the character as written.

  • @elenore88 Although I hate some of the hairstyles they gave her. The ones on top of her head didn't seem very flattering. When you have something like Gywenth Paltrow to work with you make the most of it. (And they dressed Ramola really badly. Could have done so much better there.) Details like that really make a difference to the overall presentation and the way an audience responds to the film.

  • I love Gwyneth Paltrow.

  • how immensely annoying this porcelain sugar bowl - GP! Thank God there is 2009 version with Romola Garai.

  • if i have not spoken it's because i am afraid i'll awaken myself from this dream.

    SOOOO cute....

  • "Maybe it is our imperfections that make us so perfect for one another."

Yes. This is exactly what a real and good relationship consists of. I absolutely love this. People constantly look for perfection in their future significant other, when they need to realize that it's their flaws that make that person so agreeable, strange as it may seem.

  • She WOULD be the Austen heroine to have a brilliant pink room.

  • "I rode through the rain...and I'd...I'd ride through worse than that if I could just hear your voice telling me, that I might at least have some chance to win you"

  • I don't really like the actor they got to play Emma at all. She's too... giraffe-ish.

  • @SuprSingr Sorry you do not like who they chose to play Emma but she is both talented, pretty, has an amazing accent even though she is not British and she is GWYNETH PALTROW who played in IRON MAN(hint hint!)!I guess she was talented enough to play in Seven, and win an Oscar for SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE...You were saying? She is way better than the lady who plays in the 2009 version...

  • @ics002 I don't care who the actress is, what other movies she's been in, or what awards she's won. I still don't think she suits the role of Emma. I'm sorry I have an opinion? But if you're referring to the Emma in the 2009 BBC series, then I have to agree that this actress does suit the role a bit better.

  • @ics002 she's actually terrible though.

  • Awwww, poor Mr. Knightley. They did a pretty good job with the garden scene, though I still very much prefer the original in the book. Jane Austen seemed to have a habit of blathering and drawing things out longer than they needed, so I can see why they cut some stuff out, but the garden scene was brilliant in the book. This one just... isn't as perfect. But still, pretty good. I think they captured the basic point of the scene well enough. Though in the book Mr. K was more sad than frustrated.

  • When one is embarassed he never notices the embarassment of the other person :)

  • In the 2009 version, Mr. Knightely says "You have borne it as no other 'woman' would have." I like the fact that he says "as 'no one' could have borne it" in this version :)

This remark may be insignificant to u all, but it is to me ^_^

  • "ooh, is Mr. Knightly coming"

" why do you say that?"

" lamb stew is his favourite"

Her expression is priceless. (l.ol.) Chick made it so funny, man:)

  • "...I hope to call you something infinitely more dear."

Best line - my heart flutters every time at the intimacy of that proposal.

  • at :52 god im saying that same prayer in my own situation :'(

  • oh my goodness, when the lady replaced the picture I thought it was a portrait of Chewbacca

  • great place to end it, right in the middle of the scene...geez... hahaha jk :P

  • best Emma :D loved Gwyneth Paltrow and Jeremy Northam

  • Such characters as Mr. Knightley (and , if we consider it, even Mr. Darcy) do not exist in real life. Never existed, and never will be present. Too perfect to be true. Only such a genius talent as of Jane Austens' could have created them.... eternally exciting interest, and never ceasing to be considered perfect in all senses of the word.

  • @TheRussianalien I disagree completely. Especially in the case of Mr. Knightly, who is remarkably similar to a real person. He is not too perfect to be true, he is the kind and understanding friend. There are tons of wonderful men in the world and while they won't be carbon copies of literary characters, they can hold many or most of the same personality traits.

  • Her hair is so weird looking and distracting in this scene.

  • @jame1881 i thought the same thing! the entire time I was like FIX YOUR HAIR!!!!! lol

  • Especially hot when he be poppin' that colla.

  • oh DEAR! teehee this is so adorable.. i love this version

  • Emma is too old and Knightly too young in this one.

He's supposed to be 16 years her senior but looks the same age.

  • @EbonyHood There is eleven years between the actors in real life.

  • @EbonyHood in the novel Emma is 21, therefore Mr. Knightley ought to be 37. In real life Gwyneth Paltrow was 24 at the time, and Jeremy Northam is 35. I dare say the difference is not that big, is it?

  • @EbonyHood Gwyneth Paltrow was 24 when she did this movie. About the right age wouldn't you say?

  • this is the best Mr. Knightley of all! he makes this version my favourite one

  • this is the best version of emma ever

  • Im still lost wat is imperfect about mr knightly?

  • @teamausten so true

  • Even near the end she still doesnt understand, what a silly wife she'll make.

  • Thank you Jane Austen:)

  • little awk

  • I love this version of Emma the best but I wish they would have left in the part where Mr Knightley says: "..his aunt was in the way, his aunt dies, etc..." I still remember Mark Strong's complaint about that b/c he was so emphatic about it (that and when he complained that Frank had to ride all the way to London for a haircut....lol)

  • beautiful

  • Jeremy Northam makes a really charming Mr Knightley. I think his interpretation of the character was the best.

  • @whatmakesgoodbetter Definitely. I couldn't agree more ;) and I've only seen Jeremy Northam in 1 other film, which is virtually the complete opposite of a Jane Austen adaptation and yet he does it brilliantly.

  • @whatmakesgoodbetter Have you seen him in The Tudors? I saw it on DVD. He plays a very serious man, but behind the scene he's a big goofball! He's joking around, making funny faces, pulling pranks at people during filming. It made me like him even more.

  • @boya307 i like the fake puking part!

  • Might be the most beautiful proposal scene I've ever seen

  • superb!

  • I love Jane Austen and her irrevocable love stories! <3

  • "There is something about his situation that I envy..."

"...Did I mention we are having a new drain installed?!"

    LOL!

  • "I tried not thinking about him...but something must be done!" Oooh

  • love this movie! I love her prayer! "If he could just stay single Lord..."

  • ahhhh swoon much? I know I am!

  • The awkwardness towards each other when they meet in the meadow is so awesome. I mean... it's SO AWKWARD!

  • Who needs this guy when you've got a billionaire called Tony Stark?

  • I've had it of the whole dialogue business. Just because the screenplay doesn't have every exact word or line from the original novel....... that isn't a reason to dislike the newest BBC adaptation. Sheesh.

  • 2:30 - 3:02 ish - LOL AWKWARD!!!

  • I saw two other versions, I read the book years before I saw this movie. I think actors match really well, they do a fantastic job playing the role. And the way they show landscapes is fantastic, so dreamy. I loved this movie and especially this part. It's too bad it doesn't happen often in real life, everyone found their perfect match. Usually if you read book first then movie looks bad, this one was great ! at least to my opinion.

  • 1:55 he has helmet hair, but still hot. :-)

  • What was wrong with Jane Austen's original proposal that they felt the need to change the dialogue? I mean, Jeremy Northam is dreamy as per usual, but still- what happened to, say, the line,"If I loved you less, I might be able to talk about it more"?

  • @UnoriginalJess92 ... I know what you mean.. .I missed that crucial line too.... When Johnny Lee Miler says it in the 2009 version I nearly melted in my seat.. *swoons and sighs*... I like this version but I LOVE the 2009 one with JLM and Romola Garai... Beautiful shot, acted and just lovely to watch... :0)x

  • @wenglishsal Guess that means I just have to see the 2009 version, then, hm? :) Glad I'm not alone in that sentiment, though!

  • @UnoriginalJess92 2009 version is on here too... Lovely stuff, it means you can watch 3 full version of EMMA... *sighs and swoons and begins to fan frantically again* :0)x

  • I love this story ♥ I would ride through the rain for it (?) haha

  • Swoooooon.

  • jesus obviously Emma has never read a Jane Austen novel

  • "I rode through the rain." That is like the most romantic proposal ever. Awwwww. Luv it.

  • F*ck why there is no man like that..

  • "He offends me deeply..." That wig was pretty offensive.

  • i love the way the "AUSTEN BOYS" declares their love for the "AUSTEN GIRLS " at every end of Jane Austen's novels or movies :)

  • awww! that love scene is sooo cute! hes so mad cuz he loves her, but he doesnt know she wont listen to him cuz she thinks he loves hariett but he loves her!

  • They really did write some good scripts back in the 90's :)

  • @3minuteslate

    My jestometer just blew-up ;-)

  • Oh irony is cruel. I started watching this movie in the hopes that I could escape the pathetic part of my love life, only to find the exact same situation in here!

  • "i rode through the rain..." haha that part always makes me laugh!

  • My favourite rendition of Mr Knightley's proposal! But GP....ugh. Where is the internal struggle?

  • Oh wrong, so wrong, this Emma! She has no depth whatsoever, comes across as totally stupid and unevolved...she is supposed to be suffering inside! I cringe at the sight of it. And Mr. Knightley so self-conscious at the beginning? Never! This just won't do. Jeremy Northam acts splendidly, then it is all lost in the next frame with GP's void impression...oh my....imperfections, indeed!

  • I'm torn between getting the DVD of this version or the 2009 one. :D

    Thankyou for this, bb.

  • @akkasvids ... I know what you mean, but I must say that in my opinion 2009 just edges it... But I love all the Emma's.. and Mr Knightleys as well... :0)x

  • Mr Knightley is such a gentleman. if someone like that were to exist...

  • @wom901 I am happy to say that here, in the South, men are still taught to be gentlemen, they do exist! :)

  • @wom901 they still exist!...dont lose hope, just look in all the right places :D

  • "Did I mention that we're having a new drain installed?" haha! poor emma - give the guy a chance to SPEAK. lol.

  • how are you ? happy ? lol

  • Dear Lord, if he cannot share a life with me, is it wrong to ask that he not share it with anyone? ... I would be content if he would just stay single Lord; that's it! If he would just stay single Lord, that would be enough for me to be perfectly satisfied. (Almost.) Amen. haha love that...too true! :(

  • like the bbc one better

  • @RachSaysHi But it's not as cute and funny...the only good thing about the BBC one is the line "If I loved you less, I might be able to talk about it more"

  • this scene is so beautifully done

  • i'm meant to be writing an essay on the study of gender and all i want is a guy to come along and sweep me off my feet!

  • I will never get tired of this movie!!!!!

Wish that romance was still like that till now

    (sighhhhhh)

  • I ws just sayin wot I thought. If u didint agree u didn't hve to say so but if u wanted u didn't hve to direct it at me

  • and you point is? There's nothing wrong with an older man w/ a younger woman, or vise versa.

  • @mentalist007coldplay as long as they are happy...it does not matter to anyone...

  • She's 20 and he's 36! ;) I know- that changes nothing.

  • she thinks he wants to be with harriet and is going to tell her that he wants to marry harriet

  • i don't get it, if she loves him and wishes to marry him.. why doesnt she want him to tell her he loves her? or does she think he means that he loves harriet?

  • @pressedinorgandy She thinks he's going to tell her he loves Harriet and she can't bear to hear that.

  • she thinks he means harriet

  • i feel a swoon coming on...JN is a super fox, too bad men cant be this polite and well mannered anymore.

  • Badly done 34maude badly done! (LOL) but it iworks two ways. We live in a culture that creates a real pathology between men and women

    yours truly

    G Knightly

  • oops women!

  • I have to say that I love both JN and JLM's Mr. Knightley's, but for different reasons. Jeremy Northam's Mr. Knightley is handsome, dashing, and more lively, whereas JLM's is quiet, solemn, and tender. Love them both!!!

  • Comment removed

  • @jules666888 Regarding the BBC/PBS thing, the miniseries was made by the BBC, but it was shown on PBS in America, so I put both so that everyone would know what I meant.

  • god i wish people still talked like that

  • This proposal is quite lovely, but I don't think it quite fits with the way Mr. Knightley was written. Knightley isn't eloquent, he's awkward and doesn't know how to express his feelings. That's why he's supposed to say "If I loved you less, I might be able to talk about it more." I think the new BBC/PBS version and Jonny Lee Miller did a better job, especially with this scene.

  • exactly EXACTLY Paltrow's accent is almost hilarious when you compare with Gromola's and the whole scene itself...(BBC)...not PBS (what's that about???)British born(Austen)British made (BBC) always the best combination

  • I rode through the rain......I would ride through worse to hear you say I have a chance to win you....sigh....

  • sigh and not in a good way yawnnnnnnnnnnnn

  • I love the formalities they say to each other, and the way they beat around the bush when they so OBVIOUSLY just want to kiss each other!!

  • "I do not wish to call you my friend because, I hope to call you something infinitely more dear"

his wife, oh how that has changed over the years if only it would mean as much as it did back then

  • Lol you're so right^^

  • Look at how he still wants her to be happy even though he loves her.

  • This video is really sweet I think it is my favorite Jane Austen based movie. Besides Pride and Predjudice of course.

  • you really need to see the more updated version then or read the book I think you'd enjoy both more ever heard an English person doing an American accent? Works both ways...or not.....dismal and insulting

  • I thought that House guy was british. Also who sters in the new version of Emma?

  • Hugh Laurie is British and all his best work ( in my own opinion ) was done in his beautiful natural English accent , I find his American one in House embarrassing and cringeworthy. Jonny Lee Miller and Gomola Garai star as Knightly and Emma in the new version.

  • Oh you see I never new his name but he did good in Sense and Sensabliity. Do you know where I could get the new Emma?

  • Who did good in Sense & Sensibility? The new adaptation of Emma I couldn't find in any shop except HMV but it was twice the price of Amazon which is where I got mine.

  • Hugh Laurie plays Mr. Palmer in the sense and Sensibility with Emma Tompson as Elenor. Do you think that I could get Emma on Netflix?

  • Probably not but it's worth a try.

  • I checked it is I saw it and it was awessssssome. I liked how it explained about Frank and Jannes childhood. Two thumbs up.

  • and I tried not to think about him when I went to bed.

  • This is the best Emma; best matched actors, even better than the one that just came out this year. I like the moments when they finally met next to the medow, akward of each other when they're already in love with each other but have been friends for so long that they don't know how to confess it.

  • Then do not speak it! Do not commit yourself to something which may injure us both to have said!

    Ouch baby! Very Ouch.

  • I love the moment he smiles when she hesitates before kissing him : )

  • I was thinking the exact same thing.. i LOVE it!!

  • I like this version, but yes Emma is supposed to be a brunette and Harriet a blonde. That is how Austen writes it.

  • Her hair changes a lot in this scene. Oh, and I love this film so much!

  • Emma is always supposed to be blonde
