It's amazing how slowly he's able to do this! Thomas Allen does it the same speed. These days guys just go as fast as possible to get he most phrases per breath. I know it's a b**ch, but clearly it's doable ;)
The two of them are wonderful as expected but I'll never get used to these von Karajan tempos. I respect the singers even more, though, when I realize that they must adapt to the conceptions of different musical directors, yet perform creditably. They have opinions as we do, and different musical conceptions demand different things vocally. I suppose adaptability goes with being world-class like these two.
@ElisabettaVS well what do you expect this is the only aria in any opera where there's barley anywhere to take a breath. most opera singers if they take this roles ahave to learn "circular breathing" which is where they breathe in but still sing (don't know how they do it but some can)
@FinalFreek Well, the Largo al Factotum would be another candidate where you cannot breathe or can hardly breathe - I have heard of the circular breathing, but only for flute players so far, it is possible, you breathe through your nose in and breathe through your mouth out at the same time.
@FinalFreek It is not possible to sing while just pushing air from mouth, because the air has to go through vocal cords. There is only thing to do to sing this aria in a right way: to set your "snap breaths" on right places. And then it is all about the practice and proper breath control. Circular breathing is only for the wind instruments. Singers can use it just as a part of breathing exercise, but not during the actual singing.
it's difficult explain it tecnically... but to make you understand that i mean you have to thing to people when they want make fun about an operasinger....
the sound normal people does to "copy" professional opera singer is an horribil "ingolamento"...
ya know he's pretty good overall I would say he's not pretty enough to be the pick-up artist Giovanni was or at least he doesnt act it. Common issue I've found. and surprisingly falls behind several times. Not bad really.
@nikolaidelphinki Samuel Ramey's not pretty enough??? There have been a number of people who have said the converse; that Sam Ramey has always gotten by on his looks and that he can't really sing. I think he's a brilliant singer...and that he's very handsome, too.
I like the 1990 performance at the met better. Plus it has Moll as the commendatore. Ramey and Furlanetto are inseparable. They are the perfect leading men in Don Giovanni. I like Karajans but Levine's conducting is faster for you people that don't like the draginess. It really depends on the listener. It is a shame the met performance is only on youtube and not dvd and blu ray.
ramey is very good. mozart anticipated wagner in the finale of don giovanni. but spare us the furtwanglers and von karajans that disfigure it in such a crudely wagnerian manner. mozart would have fled nazi germany unlike these two talented but compromised artists. mozart lives forever.
If you don't have the DVD of this performance of Don Giovannni, GET IT. Lokk up Karajan or Ramey or Don Giovanni. All performances are inspired, especially Ramey, Battle, and Winberg.
If you don't like Samuel Ramey (which i'm not sure there's terribly many out there that do), you must at least acknowledge his wide range of rep and the quality of singing he does in that range.
Best Don Giovanni!!!:)

Samuel Ramey in my opinion the best Don since Pinza and Siepi, but Karajan conducted Mozart like Verdi.
