WOW!!! I LOVE HIM!!! SYLVESTER was my guide to the amazing world of disco and his music was the key that opened (no, to be correct, he actually kicked in) the closet door for me, in the early 80-ties. His voice is soooo unique and I really hope and pray that he's an angel now... That would be the only reason I want to go to heaven!!!
Oh man I'm sooo jealous I wasn't around when she was alive, I heard her in that eddie murphy film "trading places" and i've been a fan ever since, rip diva disco queen
I sang with GOTHAM at the same time as Syl and he invited us onstage to do the number with him. The first time we saw him was at The City in SF doing a drag evening of Josephine Baker Such a generous gifted man.
Sylvester..........now this was a true DIVA! Living in Washington DC I had the opportunity to see him on several occasions. My favorite performance was at the Lost and Found. He gave the children what they came for. No faking or lipping to a record. The vocals were for real. Not to mention the short sequinned mini dress, and blond streaks in his straight, shoulder length hair. I also saw him perform at Badlands in Dupont Circle. The music LIVES!!
wow....I'm late to the party. A bud in 70's told me "Sylverster is (was) a man". DID NOT believe it, or know it till NOW, seeing the posts. NOW don't tell me Divine was a man also? Sylvester had amazing pipes, huge loss for the music world. Wonder how Sylverster would have regarded rap "music"? Depressing? heh.
ok im 26 yrs old and i only knew about sylvester from my moms growing up. I just heard this song this yr but knew his other songs. I LOVE THIS SONG. RIP to a great singer its such a shame the good die young
The gays had Key West in 1978, I was there. Divine also lived there and Sylvester came to visit Divine regularly. Since us gays basically had the island to ourselves, it was a huge party. The clubs would play his songs constantly when he was in town, and he would be out on the dance floor with the rest of us. On one of these visits, Sylvester walked out of the club drunk with Divine and started singing Mighty Real walking down street, with Divine dancing. The crowd went wild. Those memories!
@YouCanSayIt This is a great story! I came out in 1982 in Dallas and I had the pleasure of seeing both Divine and Sylvester there. Yes, those were the greatest of days. I live in Boston now and still go out to the clubs, but the gay men here are SO uptight and worried about what people think. Sad.
@YouCanSayIt I am sooo Jealous. You got to hear Sylvester singing in the streets. and see Divine in Person? Oh My Cher!!! Two of my AbsoFave Legendary performers. rip to both fierce diva's .
@YouCanSayIt I saw both Divine and Sylvester perform at clubs in Dallas in the early/mid 80's. It's ironic how the gay nightlife was so much more fun when we were "oppressed".
thanks for posting this song. i think i first heard it one afternoon while walking home from the beach in Miami Beach, Florida in 1982. i could only remember what i thought were the lyrics 'call me'. i looked and looked but never heard what i remembered to be this infectious dance beat. i just came across this a few days ago, and i'm pretty sure it's the song i heard that day....i did see Slyvester at the corner of 18th and Castro one day shortly before he died. i only vaguely knew who he was...
I was too young to see Sylvester during his hayday I caught him at the end of his career before he was tragically taken but his influence was heavy. I wish I could have seen him live I am sure he was spectacular to say the least.
Crazy ridiculously wonderful lacrazia3. Saw him at Magic Mtn outside of Los Angeles with Two Tons of Fun. What a night need I say, lol. Shame he couldn't stay around longer, he would have been a SUPERSTAR!
if u've not seen sylvester live, its VERY DIFFICULT to comment on him as a performer. any 1 that's seen him likely knows the difference is breath taking. i DON'T know a more POLISHED & COMMANDING of stage artist. not talkin bout pure vocal ability but total package. he did stage, w/ more precision than ross, barbara, & simone(nina)indescribable, beautiful/fascinating 2 see. chaka is my fav singer, if her stage performances were as good as sylvesters, i'd b dead from stroke by now. lol jus sayin
lol. noo, i'm not bias. i just think a synth bass goes better with this song than a slap bass. i still enjoy the remix, but i'm curious why they would release the remix on the reissued cd and not the original...?
I'm just kidding LOL. You know though, I wonder that, too. I really don't know, hell they could have put it as a bonus track or something. Both versions are on point!!!
I think they were going for a Patrice Rushen "Forget me Nots" feel, which why they switched to slap bass. The last minute of this is slammin'. Poor Sylvester got spanked by the "real Divas", though. They're just got so much more vocal control (and subtlety) with their rifting chops (5:28-5:39) and delivery :-) Them girls (Chaka and her brother are on this, btw, 4:27, 4:44) pounched on his ass "proper", in that turn around! LOL! U don't mess wit them "church divas", I tell ya!
Oh, and I didn't spell "pounched" wrong :-) The regular English spelling is "pounced", which simply means to "jump down on top of something, from above". That something being "the music track" in this song, of course. But now "pounching", well now that's what Stevie W, Aretha F, Patti L, Gladys K, Whitney H, Chaka K and Mary, Mary do! When they come flying down, you betta move yo ass on outta way, if you ain't ready to git yo rift on "proper", baby! Umm? I might put Christina A in there, too :-)
@Thunderstormwitch Thanks.BTW, I was just kiddin' about him gettin' spanked by Chaka and Gavin Christoper (Chaka's brother). I found out recently (well maybe a year ago, now) that Narada Michael Walden was the driving force behind this remix, and that's TM Stevens on bass.
@MarioSpeedWagon138 this one just great he put his soul n feeling n his songs U should have seen him n person when was livin and on tour travelin in europe and the bay area....superb artist regardless of his sexual preference...never has been given proper statis....sexy...prince....rip babe i miss u...
