Columbus, Ohio has a long tradition of jazz organ groups. Hank Marr was tops in Columbus. Tony Monaco (in high school) was the youngest of all the organ players during that time. I was playing with Hank and Tony played with Rusty at the Anchor Inn. When I was coming up, we had Hank Marr, Jimmy Carter, Bootsy Carter, Bobby ? (organist/singer), Alvin Valentine, Bobby Floyd, Uncle Dave, Bobby Pierce, and Yogi Cowan. Skip Anderson was playing B3 in the funk bands. There was Don Patterson too.
Tom is such a good player. Took some jazz guitar lessons from him back in about 1984. Turned out to be the best bit of musical education I've ever had.
Fantastic! Thanks so much for posting this. Hank was the Professor of Jazz Organ and a true gentleman in the music world. Columbus, Ohio should always be proud...
Glad you enjoyed it! We really hope to get the DVD put together this spring...I want to do a little 20 minute documentary on Hank's life for it thought, so it may take some time - hard to fit it all in when doing it with no funding! Check out another one - "My Cool Job: Musician" - it's another tune from this show, with Jeanette Williams singing with the Trio - it's neat too!
God bless Hank Marr. He forgot more about the organ than most of us will ever know. Sad he's no longer with us. Funny, though, how the guitar player looks just like Joey DeFrancesco!
Thanks for this Terry. I was there. in fact that's me whistling at 7:03.
