@audveltadmuna I wouldn't say the bank stole it from them. The deal is pretty transparent, and everyone knows that banks are not holding on to your money, but rather lending it out to risky business. If people want safety, they can't require interests from their banks, but must rather pay for having an account.

The people who want you to pay are just greedy bastards, and they are the thieves who want to use your governments law and police force to make you pay.

For the incompetence of the Icelandic central bank you will pay a terrible price, that is the truth, not a joke. Offcourse Iceland can decide not to pay the foreign debts. By doing that the country will follow the example of Argentinia. The only disadvantage will be that your country will get no more loans anywhere in the world. That would lead to a valueless Icelandic currency and total poverty and no possibities to import any luxury goods for people without foreign currency.

I am sorry for Iceland. I agree that they cannot pay back all the debts created by the Icelandic banks, even when they are obliged to do so under international law. A fair compromise is needed. No one benefits from a bankrupt Iceland.

"luxury goods" are going to be the least of many icelanders' problems. argentina may even be a good example to follow, considering it's managed to comfortably recover from its crisis in the space of a decade.

That Argentina comfartly recovered from its crisis is a fairy tale. My sister lives there; never seen so many extremely poor people. And indeed, most Icelandic people will be very poor in a decade (and longer) due to the economic policies of their government and lack of control on the banking system.

@911Dagur I would just like to point out that it is not lack of regulation that is the problem, but rather the fact that governments are actually guaranteeing the deposit of money into banks that are then using the money for their investments. When (very predictably) banks get into problems, the governments always helps them. This creates a moral hazard. If one bank does not play, it will loose all customers. Who wants to pay for a savings account when you can get interests from others.
