  • Who cares who was singing background! You really only listen to the lyrics that The Lead is singing anyway!

  • if this is a motown recording it is not cindy and mary you are hearing. it is likely the adantes backing diane. cindy never sang on a motown record.

  • @hobox2012 yes she did.

  • I LOVE THE BACK GROUND VOCALS!

mary and flo (yes flo this was recorded 66)

can go so low and then so high! love it!!!!!!

  • Jimmy can feel safe that nobody, I mean NOBODY, can touch his original version!

  • Florence left the group in 1967. This was recorded in 1969. It's Cindy.

  • It was released in 1969, however it was recorded in 1966 when Florence was still with the group.

  • @MotownConnoisseur30 This is Diane's 1969 voice, not the one used in the original lineup of the legendary Supremes which we would have heard in 1966. It is Mary and Cindy holding Diane up in the background, not Flo.

  • It sounds like Mary and Cindy on background to me. Not Flo; not Andantes. I could be wrong but that's how it sounds to me.

  • @JohnXHoward cindy never sang on a motown record. she was under contract with patti labelle. she only did live shows with diane and mary. mary did not record with motown after flo was replaced. backgrounds were indeed done by the adantes.

  • @hobox2012 not true either, Mary and Cindy are on the singles done with the Temptations, there on LP tracks and a few b-sides

  • @MotownMaster you are correct. I mispoke. mary and cindy did not make a motown recorging with Diane Ross. They only performed live with Diana. Recorded background was indeed The Adantes.

  • @hobox2012 still not true, Cindy and Mary are on all the songs the Supremes did with The Temptations, Mary and Cindy are on He's My Sunny Boy, and others, the Andantes are probly on 40% of The Supremes recordings from late 67 to 69

  • @JohnXHoward its Mary and Florence, this was recorded in 1966 and held over

  • Mary Wells is great, but look at M.(wee boyz I like) Jackson

  • just amazing, i like both versions.

    but this is just great.

  • Yes Flo is in this song!

  • flo'ss in this song?

  • i cant hear her? didn't she sue *bad spelling* motown at this point?

  • Florence is not singing it is clearly Cindy Birdsong and Mary Wilson. One of the few cuts they got to sing on this album.

  • have u heard the temptations isng this song its on you tube temptations what becomes of the broken hearted

  • this song is so much better than alot of thier late 60s stuff go head diana mary and flo noy cindy in this song

  • No it wasnt, it was recorded in 1966, Motown just held it over

  • Wow!! it seems like Diana and the supremes recorded a cover of every song ever made!!!

  • yeah ^^ but their coverversions are 99 per cent very good

  • It's my understanding that this song was considered as a single for the Supremes, however Jimmy Ruffin pleaded and pleaded with Berry to allow him to record it.

I love both versions. The best cover, in my opinion, is Joan Osborne from the Standing in the Shadows of Motown soundtrack.

  • Wait a minute,Overrated! Come on. Diana has a sweet soft sensual SPECIAL voice. Why did she have More No.1 than any other female in HISTORY!(Including the Supremes No.1's) Because the MASSES appreciated it. No she won't Blow you away with her pipes but the voice was captivating. Too many people get too personal with the artist personal life and associate it with the talent. Maybe you aren't but don't apply for a record executive position because your taste in talent will have you starving!

  • thanks for telling that person off!

    I agree completely.

  • Graet song but this song was made for Jimmy Ruffins voice.

  • Yeah, I agree. I think Diana Ross was EXTREMELY overrated. She didn't have much of a voice..her voice NEVER changes range..never hits a high note. She's kinda boring to me. I guess she got famous because she came along at the right time in her era..today she wouldn't quite cut it.

  • At 2:28 that is the picture when Mary was angry at the princess for asking her did she have a wig on. Wathch the David Letterman clip on here, you can tell she's mad.

  • do you mean at 0:28?

  • yeah don't know how I got 2:28 LOL thanks

  • this song was recorded sometime in 1966 this is Mary and Flo, Cindy isnt on this song, Flo is also on Blowing In The Wind from Cream Of The Crop, and she is also on With A Child's Heart from the Let The Sunshine In LP

  • this was recorded in '69

  • I mean to say how beautiful Cindy Birdsong was and is.

  • I have always loved this song because of clearly hearing Cindy and Mary in the backup (of course someone will it is not them.) Also, I keep forgetting how absolutely beautiful was and is.

  • Cindy isnt on this song, Its Mary and Florence, it was recorded in 1966

  • wasn.t that Vanessa REDGRAVE in one of the pix? I usualy don't watch the montage mixes but I like to see new pictures

  • Wooow I should love you for this posting
