  • I was lucky enough to see Hotter in a rare performance of Phillip in Munich about 1967. (He usually did the Inquisitor then.) In the aria he just sat at his desk and did absolutely nothing. He didn't need to. He WAS Phillip.

  • Thank you so much for posting this. Now, he truly was a King!!

  • Simply amazing!!! Incredible

  • WOW!! I may like him even better in Verdi than I do in Wagner. And the only one I very slightly prefer in Wagner is George London. This is simply amazing.

  • @Onegin65 Ahhh, how disappointing, I would have loved to hear him perform the entire aria!

  • Is this the only excerpt of the aria that was aired?

  • What a God. Where's the rest of it!?

  • Truly amazing. Hotter was top of the line. I only wish that the entire aria were here; however, I am grateful for this rare clip. He also performed the role of The Grand Inquisitor on occasion.

  • Remarkable in every sense, musically, vocally with tensions, legato and human qualities. Even if sang in German Hans Hotter is able to give all the requested range from the original Italian language. In an interview, he said that Boris Godunov was the role the most satisfactory for him as an actor and singer. It seems that the same statement could easily be applied here with Don Carlos. Thank you for posting this amazing and rare document !

  • Sensationell, Danke

  • What an artist he was!!

  • Superbe . Hans Hotter avait une voix merveilleuse !

  • "Ella giammai m´amo" ist der korrekte Titel.

  • Ella giammai m'amò. And it's just a small part of that aria.

  • Der Göttervater ist auch im Verdi Göttervater :) Nach ihm scheint mir alles andere so falsch...

  • What is the name of this aria?

  • it is, in fact, originally "Elle ne m'aime pas"; "Ella giammai m'amó" is the later Italian translation

  • @ziapengyfence

vielen Dank fuer Upload. Hans Hotters tiefe Stimme, tiefe Interpretation!

  • Hans could sing in Esperanto and be still amazing.

  • @Tallerrigoletto

Das stammt scheinbar noch aus der längst vergangenen Zeit, also vor der Ära Karajan, wo wir an der Staatsoper noch nicht in Originalsprache gesungen hatten. Egal, Hotter war, wie Du sagst immer großartig!!!

  • Wow! I've never heard Hotter sing this. Fantastic.

  • I was at Boris Christoff's Philipp, ever ther the best, but when I listen this I hve my doubt, God gave us more than one true Philipp II pls bless them gearge london you are George London and it is your majesty

  • Someone should post his Grand Inquisitor from the MET, it's fantastic.

  • Ein edler Mut in jedem Züge... Dank dem großen Hotter - spasibo, Onegin!

  • What a treasure. Too bad it's only a portion of the scene.

  • Hans Hotter is one of the greatest singer and teacher. Here, even in German, his presence makes the ariavery convincing and beautiful. The coloration of the voice on certain words makes this version musically superb! Thank you for posting this video and more.

  • impresionante!! buenísimo este video...

  • doesn't sound quite the same in German (or French for that matter), but great nonetheless.

  • You mean Italian.

  • No. Hans is singing this aria in German...and Don Carlo was originally written in French, but I prefer it in Italian.
