Even when I was in the FCA 20 years ago there may have been 25,000 on the books but the active reserve was about 12 - 15,000 and it has been considerably streamlined since then. You don't need a freedom of information request for these figures as they are public knowledge.

i like your point why spend say 50 million to by a tank to destroy another when we have the javlin which each round costs around 50 thousend euro and can destroy any armor on todays battle field!
Javlin cannot destroy every armour on the battle feild. Plus, before armour strikes, Fighter aircraft fly in a pound the battle feild with many 1,000lb bombs.
Hence most of those soilders with Javlins are long gone. Then what? a hand full of troops with Javlins are gonna take out a division of armourd tanks and IFVs? I dont think so.
Tanks are the teeth and arms of the battle feild. Plus the Irish DF is only in place to give armed resistance untill UK and US troops arive (UK uses javlin)
The reason the Irish army has no tanks is because they use hit and run tactics.
The troop selection for the full time army is a night mare.Las year 2300 people applied for the Army Ranger Wing.3 people were deemed fit enough to start training and only 1 passed the training!

Yes, Irish army doesn't have any main battle tanks or heavy artillery, 105mm is very old and almost useless today. That is why Poland uses 122mm and 152mm howitzers :)
I do not know what the USA or British army use, but I know that Polish officers have chosen to replace the old small caliber artillery with 122mm and 152mm howitzers. 105mm is very crappy when compared to 122mm or 152mm howitzers, Irish army has no serious firepower.

A friend of my brothers has joined the British army (hes Irish, you guys are taking in everyone) and he was originally trained with the Irish army but was forced to leave due to the training.
The British army dont do parachute jumps,deep sea diving,a vehicle combat and sniping for all of your troops eg sniping isnt thought to tank drivers in the British army.
In the Irish army you have to be fully trained in all areas.We have pilots who are better snipers.

Paddy, wait up there. I was in both arimes. The Brits have the benefit of equipment and numbers, but the training is not as intensive as the Irish. They can progress to different arms after basic and there they train to specialise. Their Paras and Marines are superb soldiers, but not terribly intellectual. The Irish army has better educated soldiers, and a gretater use of high tech equipment. They all cross train on each others jobs within their Corps. They qualify as expert in all their trades.

Mowag does have a Cannon. Oto-Melara 30mm Cannon variant. Sounds is poor on video but sounds heavier than a HMG but not heavy enough for a scorpion. IMHO

More numbers is a def. I think that more elite regiment forces are also required. as well as more special forces.
Having just a small number of irish rangers is not enough and it is not flexible enough.
We have a navy but no specialist trained navy forces and you have pointed out the air force.
Having a marine core would be a good idea.

Ireland has a combine total of 8500 defence forces. and only a very small fraction of that has real specialist training.
100 or so special force is not enough for modern warfare defence.

The reason the Irish army has no tanks is because they use hit and run tactics.
The troop selection for the full time army is a night mare.Las year 2300 people applied for the Army Ranger Wing.3 people were deemed fit enough to start training and only 1 passed the training!
Man for man,these guys are unstopable.

British army could do with around 600 of these
our 800 warriors IFV are extreamly heavy etc as they are to support heavy tank regs in combat
so when the need arrises for quick reaction they are too heavy for air lift
the mowag on the other hand is perfect

Yes, Irish army doesn't have any main battle tanks or heavy artillery, 105mm is very old and almost useless today. That is why Poland uses 122mm and 152mm howitzers :)

I do not know what the USA or British army use, but I know that Polish officers have chosen to replace the old small caliber artillery with 122mm and 152mm howitzers. 105mm is very crappy when compared to 122mm or 152mm howitzers, Irish army has no serious firepower.

The Irish army use Howitzers too but these a light infantry tanks.Our army is based on the strength of our soldier,not our equipment.
Ireland is a filthy rich country and we could afford all the top of the line vehicles / jets etc But the fact of the matter is that the Irish army is a small elite force.Irish people who dont pass selection generally join the English army.
It just goes to show that if the English army take soldiers we deem to be useless, who has the better troops?

The Brtiish army still has better trained troops. Just because the selection process for the irish army is hard does'nt mean that the traing is better. The whole point of the training is to take civvies who are as you might say "useless" take them apart and then build them up into proper soldiers.
And ireland migth well be able to afford all of the tip of the line vehicles, but the fact of the matter is they dont do that kind of fighting, and there is no reason naybody would attack them.

Emm as a matter of fact they arent.
A friend of my brothers has joined the British army (hes Irish, you guys are taking in everyone) and he was originally trained with the Irish army but was forced to leave due to the training.
The British army dont do parachute jumps,deep sea diving,a vehicle combat and sniping for all of your troops eg sniping isnt thought to tank drivers in the British army.
In the Irish army you have to be fully trained in all areas.We have pilots who are better snipers.

Yeah but thats because the irish army is only 9000 strong. Ever heard the old saying "Jack of all trades, master of none".The British army has over 150+ trades, so im sure IDF soldiers are better trained then say chefs, but say the paras or royal marines? the British army is recognised around the world as having the best training. Im not saying that irish troops are shit, but the kind of operations that the british army and irish army undertake are worlds apart and the training represents this.

GIGN,US Rangers,Delta Force,GSG 9,COMSUBIN and SSG....They are all trained by ex ARW and current ARW members.

Paddy, wait up there. I was in both arimes. The Brits have the benefit of equipment and numbers, but the training is not as intensive as the Irish. They can progress to different arms after basic and there they train to specialise. Their Paras and Marines are superb soldiers, but not terribly intellectual. The Irish army has better educated soldiers, and a gretater use of high tech equipment. They all cross train on each others jobs within their Corps. They qualify as expert in all their trades.

Mowag does have a Cannon. Oto-Melara 30mm Cannon variant. Sounds is poor on video but sounds heavier than a HMG but not heavy enough for a scorpion. IMHO

oh, wait yeah i can see it now, it's two piranha's, one is behind and slightly to the side. if you look closely u can see 3 headlights and 2 turrets. scorpion headlights are lower down and it's way too big to be an AML-90. there both equipped with the oto malara 30mm cannon, the irish army has about 20 or so of these.

stupid gobshite, 50 or 60??????, scorpion????? u really know nothing. i cant remember off the top of my head but i think we have between 3-6 of them, not 50 or 60, and the bloddy scorpion is tiny compared to a mowag and its gun is nowhere near as long as the mowags 30mm canon, there are different types of mowags that can be fitted with different weapon systoms,eg, .5, 30mm, 40mm grenade launcher etc etc, so yes these mowags do have canons.

no im telling you we have 3-6 mowags with 30mm cannons, yes we have around 60 or so mowags altoghter, dont know, might have a few more than that now, most are the standard ones with the .5 turret, others have the .5 remote controled weapon platform system used for close recce, and a few are fitted with 40mm grenade launchers also used for close recce, and then we have the few were talking about which have the 30mm cannons used for medium recce missions,
