  • Priceless.

  • To a comment down below, those people laughing have been afflicted with senses of humour. It's a peculiar handicap we usually develop in childhood but with certain repressive therapy some may recover.

  • This ain't that funny, so why is everyone laughing?

  • Had to look this up after Would I Lie To You. British panel shows are making me learn about classic British comedy!

  • your avin me on aren"t you, your avin me on,eh?....no im not..i"ll never stop laughing at that.

  • This, along with MP's Parrot sketch, are the two best scenes produced, ever; by any media.

  • This is so funny, one of the best but you get customers like him in real life:}:}

  • Tins of Peas.

  • what is wrong with that guy pumps, plugs,A CAN OF PEAS, that is so a random list

  • the only one i didn't get was "saw tips". what did he think he meant?

  • @TheTork tips are another word for nipples and he thought he meant he has sore tips so he offered him ointment. hope i helped XD

  • @TheBunnyJam lol. now i get it :) this is a great sketch. and the big knockers ending would have made it perfect

  • @TheBunnyJam PS. Big up for favoring the "diggy diggy hole" song. simon and lewis are friggin' awesome

  • Timeless classic! Absolute genius!

  • Bill hooks = bollocks, broadcast in an age when the censor would never have let you get away with anything so dreadfully rude!!

  • between 1:58 and 2:05 i reckon ronnie corbett is trying so hard not to laugh at saw tips!

  • I love Ronnie's reaction every time he tries to get what Ronnie asks for, only to get corrected as to what he really wants. It's hard not to laugh.

  • CLOSE THE SHOP.

  • SHOP KEEPERS TRYING TO SELL YOU SOMTHING ALWAYS TAKE WHAT YOU SAY THE WRONG WAY.

  • PLEASE someone write subtitles for it!

Def more than a thousand of people will absolutely love it - myself included!

  • excellent..

  • pure. pure. gold.

  • LOL

  • Honeydew!

  • this is one of the best two ronnie sketches around they are legends in the biz and will continue to live on in the world of comedy

  • great video made pmsl :)

  • Comedy genius! I doubt it will ever be beaten.

  • Got any P`s ?

  • as a comedy sketch,it will never be beaten.its impossible

  • Hillerious

  • not all of them are :) in my town W,C Baker and Sons is just like this shop, without the misunderstandings of course :P

  • absolute CLASSIC!

  • Epic!

  • This made my day ...finding this sketch...I have laughed over the years at it and its still funny ...ty ..x

  • The ending to this scene (bill hooks) completely kills an utterly perfect sketch.

  • @TweekDash I think I saw an interview with Ronnie Barker where he said himself that the ending was not the best. It only occured to him after it was already filmed that the better ending was to have a female assistant and the last item on the list to be knockers :-)

  • @plugh1 I heard that someone had re-done this sketch with an alternate ending but can't seem to find it :/

  • @TweekDash

The alternate ending was that a woman with ample cleavage came out and asked him "What size knockers do you want?"

  • @TweekDash I don't get it what is the billhooks thing?

  • @Diazreta Bollocks.

  • @TweekDash Ronnie Barker later said he wasn't entirely happy with it, he apparently later claimed to have a better ending, where instead of the man coming from the back, a woman came out, looked at the list and said "right sir, what sort of knockers are you looking for?"

  • @TweekDash Bollocks.

  • oh i thought he meant pillock

  • @girlmeetscamera Bill Hooks - misread as bollocks...

  • @OnlyTheMike or, as it would have been - missaid...

  • bill hooks? i dont get it...

  • So you are not Canadian, nor do you have any friends or relatives that are either. Why did you reply? What is your point? Does it matter? Was I referring to you? Didn't think so. I'm referring to the language used in the video and nothing else.

  • As someone speaking Canadian English, I can't understand most of the jokes :(

  • @engrconway

American, Irish grandmum was raised in the UK, Family from Kansas / Texas, live on the west coast, have lived in new york ... have some canadian friends and one aussie... pretty sure I can understand anything remotely english. :D

  • I remember Ronnie Barker once said that it was only when this was performed on stage, that he re-wrote the end so that a large female would come on and say 'what kind of knockers do you want?"

Hilarious! This had made my Christmas!

  • Genius. Sheer genius.

  • Can someone translate this to American?

  • @sterling32157 i suspect that in american it wouldnt be very funny -- no change there then !

  • And yes, I know this is 70's 80's, but still. . . pretty much the same back then :)

  • I remember watching very simillar sketches when i was a child, only they where norwegian. I think the comedy was very much the same in northern europe during the 50's and 60's.. Or am i wrong?? Maybe it's just that NRK copied alot of the BBC stuff. Nice to see this anyway. Kinda brings me back to a more innocent time in my life:)

  • comedy at its very best, i remember those sort of shops where you could get anything from a single nail to a 30' ladder

  • Ronnie Corbett was on the show "Would I lie to you?" where celebrities is handed a card which they haven't seen before and written on that card is a truth or a lie about themselves and the others have to guess if it is actually true or a lie.

On Corbett's card it said: "Last week I actually had to go in to a shop and by four candles"

Search on Youtube on "would i lie to you four candles" and you'll find the video.

    It's hilarious!

  • Got any P`s ?.

  • This is a little much for my delicate American sensibilities. That and I can't understand that damn shopkeeper. My own language is weird.

  • @TheWhisperingCactus man,your weird if you dont find this funny..Letter O`s.

  • @TheWhisperingCactus what do you mean you can't understand him? he's speaking english like any other shopkeeper in England lol

  • @samswhore English in England is vastly different than the English I'm used to.

  • got any o"s. that sketch make cry laughing

  • Funniest thing about this is I still talk like this

  • this is on my best of the two Ronnies tape, love this

  • Both this and Monty Python are genius, it's not like you have to choose between one and the other.

  • absolute awesome stuff, why ronnie barker was never knighted i do not know.

  • there shouldn't even be a dislike button on this!

  • 8 peolple don't understand english, maybe...

  • Comic fucking genius!!!

  • Their timing was just absolutely phenomenal... talk about knowing exactly how to pace a sketch...

  • 7 people really need a sense of humour

  • best comedy sketch ever made.

  • @Reicheagles without a doubt..

  • Class

  • @Coraflange1

    crap?

this is one of the best/ most famous sketches ever!

  • working in a hardware shop at 17 and having someone come in every day saying four candles expecting me to know what they were on about. this sketch while funny pisses me off just for that reason

  • I need fork handles

  • What size? 13 amp! LMAO! Brilliant!

  • The masters of wordplay at play :)

  • I'm too young to remember this sketch - I used to watch repeats in the 80s with my GPs loved them laughing their heads off-, but I saw on Antiques Roadshow today a woman had the original sketch written by Ronnie Barker! It was a retrospective show, so Ronnie Barker confirmed it by his handwriting

  • @LilithFilth Ronnie Barker's been dead for years, how could he have confirmed it?

  • @hoodman12 It was an old AR from the archive.

  • Got any p's? LOL!!!!!!! Laugh so much almost wet myself!!!!!! (joke)

  • Mon repose!

  • I luv this! My brother and my friend did this at school: SO FUNNY!!!!!!!!!! XD lolz! XD

    :) xx

  • "You're 'avin' me on"

    ROFLMAO!

  • From this moment - the comedy standard was set!

  • This is brilliant but i prefer the Mastermind sketch.

  • I have forgotten how brilliant that sketch is, a genius pair, I never copped the billhooks part before,

  • Wordplay genius!

  • No, "O"s...

  • Alternative ending had a well clad woman replacing Ronnie C and asking "What size knockers do you want?"

Got a signed copy of all his work, including this

  • Classic!

  • Genius. I love it when Corbett nearly loses it at the "saw tips".

  • quite simply compic genius. so simple yet so effective

  • Love it, so funny!

  • A LADY BROUGHT THE ORIGANAL HAND WRITTEN SCRIPT FOR FOUR CANDLES INTO ANTIQUES ROADSHOW! HER MUM WAS GONNA THROW IT OUT, ! 2-3000 POUNDS! RONNIE ACTUAKLY WROTE THE FIRST 2 OR 3 SEASONS UNDER A FALSE NAME ! DIDNT WANT THE ATTENTION, THATS REAL CLASS! GOD BLESS U rb!

  • God bless Gerald Wiley. :D

  • Ronnie b wrote most of the sketches - he was super talented ... Great sketch !

  • Class....piece of genius....the two ronnies at their best.....i watch this one time and time again and laugh every time

  • ROFL!!! I love the Peas part. Ronnie's getting frustrated as hell, about ready to clobber the other Ronnie with the handle he just got him.

  • CLASSIC; they don't make them like that anymore,

  • I can't rate this sketch highly enough. Genius!

  • I saw an interview with them and they said after they filmed it they should have changed the ending so a woman with large breats came takes his list and then asks "So, what sort of knockers do you want?"

  • Im not sure on the bill hooks one is I supposed to sound rude?

  • b*llocks :)?

  • Yes. Remember this is going out before the watershed - so they can't say "Bollocks"... and it was when the National Viewers and Listeners Assoc had a little more sway...

  • Classic - Barker & Corbett at their best EVER! :)

  • They don't come much better than this!

  • Mon Repose...hahaha

  • I personally love the "O's" and Peas bit xDDD

R.I.P Ronnie Barker/ Gerald Wiley xx

  • the sad thing about watching this sketch is that all those old fashioned hardware/grocery stores are all out of business due to the franchises like homebase etc etc.

  • @metal1313 I live in se london and we have a lot of these types of places.

  • @metal1313 Not true, there's still one in the Village I live :). A proper old one like this :)

  • @metal1313

Come to my town of Cross Hills and I'll show you one almost the spitting image of R&R.

But I don't regret the grumpy old bastards (exactly like Corbett here)( who used to run these places like their divine fiefdom!!

  • @metal1313 One down the road from me in London, established over 200 years ago, still going strong!

  • The best joke ever told =)

  • It's ironic... everyone loves the 4candles bit... I actually like the 13amp plug.

  • yes that is true. Me and mum do the four candles when we are going around Sainburys and just nows we did the washers bit, that got a laugh too.

  • Ronnie Barker deserves to get into comedy heaven just for writing this sketch alone!

    Great post

    Thanks garviebhoy

  • I can't beleive it was written in 1976 because it's still as fresh as it was when it was first written. Has me in stitches every time. Priceless!!

  • Just watch Ronnie Corbett.

    Absolutely superb.

Barker is brilliant as always but I love Corbett in this sketch.

Will be funny in 100 years time.

    2 Ronnies LEGEND:

    RIP: Ronnie Barker!

  • The funnisest TV comedy sketch ever. i remember seeing for the very first time and laughing till it hurts. I still laugh out load. Pure genius. I wish I was as clever, to write such a work.

  • Any one from Barrow in Furness remember Dolings?

  • Corbett carries this sketch.

  • Ronnie B never really liked the ending to this sketch. He rewrote it later the new ending had a woman come out to serve at the ending and instead of Billhooks she would ask "What size knockers were you looking for?"

  • this is the funniest comedy sketch ever, brilliant

  • Very funny i think Ronnie B was funny his is the best comedy sketch they done

  • So funny....forkhandles. Enough said.

  • Can anyone advise me if they did a version of this in another show where a posh guy comes into a department store asking for "Tiles" - "Bathroom Tiles" - for drying ones self after a bath. Maybe i dreamt it?

  • i asked my dad and he can't remember one :S sounds like a funny dream though!

  • Yep, they did. Also talking about getting some soup.

    What kind?

    Brine.

    Brine?

    Yes, brine windsor...

  • Oh i need to see this. Priceless. Thanks zebkepple

  • can someone please post the chloe lane, jonny dankworth "three blind mice" sketch up for me i think its on par with this

  • Regularly voted the funniest sketch ever written (by the british public). Comedy is comedy whether you come from Britain or the USA. You either see the humour or you don't. Personally I love this sketch, especially when compared to arse ache.

  • You are either american or retarted

  • he spelt 'arse' the british way so second option applies :D

  • Genius.....

  • The ultimate comedy sketch.......31yrs old and it still has me in stitches

  • Total Geeeeeeeeeeeeenius

  • Vintage comedy, why don't they do it like that anymore?.

  • Since when are their tins of peas in hthose type of shops??!!!!

  • "Since when are their tins of peas in hthose type of shops?"

I used to live in an out in the sticks village - our shop sold everything from hinges and six inch nails to ice creams. If customers wanted it , they sold it!

Very picky comment! It is brilliant!

  • I'm not rying to be picky!! I to agree that it is brilliant. In our shops like that they only sell DIY stuff thats all!!

  • In small communities in the middle of nowhere, back when car ownership was as prevalent as it is today, the local shop would often be "a general store", which stocked a little of everything. A kind of "superstore" in miniature.

These days, though, most everyone has a car and a freezer for keeping food for long periods, so folks mostly do a "weekly shop" at a large supermarket instead, as it's more convenient.

So you don't see these kinds of shops - the "general store" - very often anymore.

  • Oops, I obviously meant "wasn't as prevalent" rather than "was as prevalent" in the above.

    Dumb typo. ;D

  • "Got any P's?"

"Why the bleedin' 'ell didn't ya tell me that whilst I were up there?!"

  • O's...no O's...ohhh O's...no O's...as in pantiehOe's...no no no...O's, for a Gate

  • Saw tips?

  • omg lol :D total legends
