Who the heck is StoryNclark what did he say and seeing as his comments were removed be negative votes, what could he have said that was so insulting? Could anything insulting possibly be said when this is SOSOSOSO good?
A very ambitious goal, especially if you consider that the subject is the most difficult ever. People learn to interpret human expressions very early in life, and that skill progresses in time. Creating a convincing expression without it to look somewhat "weird" is a challenge even for the best artists around.
I like watching your videos and all, but just to clear something up: If you have no photo reference, then it isn't photorealism. Photorealism means copying/painting a photograph verbatim; ergo, you need to have a photograph. If you make a painting that looks realistic, but from a live model or imagination or whatever, that's realism. They're different. Just sayin'
@StoryNClark I work as a commercial artist between the advertising and entertainment industries. Whenever the the term "photorealism" is used professionally in the work I do, (by clients, artists, art directors etc.) it simply means that the artwork has photo-real qualities to it. (i.e.- it can almost be mistaken for a photo. ) A real photo reference does not have to be involved in the process.
omg!!! i know you made this lady up from your mind, but imagine how someone would feel if this was a perfect image of them in real life somewhere in the world lol and they see you draw a perfect picture of them without ever seeing them!wow great job btw
@cgsbgs Technically it does, actually. If it has "photo-real qualities," that's fine--you've got a realistic rendering with a touch of artificiality. But that's not Photorealism. Photorealism is, was, and always shall be an art movement that requires the use of a camera and photograph to collect information, a mechanical way to transfer the image, and a finished product that looks like a photograph. True photorealism absolutely must come from a photograph. Period.
@StoryNClark ...The term was indeed used in the context you are speaking, but it is one of those words that have multiple meanings depending on the way in which it is being used. The context in which it is being used here is 100% accurate to one of the definitions which happens to be (as I said) the most commonly used meaning of the word in the industry I work in. (...and there are dictionaries and sources that cite this use as one of the definitions of the word.)
Her mouth is too narrow (the tips should line up with the centers of the eye), her eyes are too high on the head, crooked and bug out too much (which would be easy to fix), her left cheek bone is higher than her right (which can be fixed with a little high lighting), and her nose is too flat. Other than that, it could pass to most non-artists as photo-realistic. Not bad, not bad at all.
@StormCloudGriffin I agree actually. The mouth doesn't seem very natural. If she was pursing her lips like that you would see the cheeks react as well. The left side of her chin is off as well (our right). Seems a little flattened and hard edged to the eye.
Well done! This is the true test. Its often a good way to see where improvements are needed in your skills and then honing them till they are perfect. Nice Job!!
i just uploaded a video of an oil painting that took me 5 months to finish.
i would like to get some feedback on it. so if everyone that reads this could check it out and let me know what you think it would help me out! the video is called -- monumental oil painting- from start to finish. thanks everyone!
Come on, folks. Not everything is about proportion. Not everything has to be ideal. There are lots, and I mean LOTS of people in the world who doesn't fit in the ideal artistic proportions. In fact, very few probably does.
The proposition was photo realism. In essence, realism is opposed to idealism.
if you flip the pic, you actually see mistakes in proportion better. thats because you have to focus on the pic in a new way if you flip it, so you see more mistakes than usual. very helpful. also good when working on a piece of papier, to hold it against light.
imagine yourself as a withness of a crime and the police ask you to describe the bad guy and you go like, gimme a couple of minutes, and then you give them like this fotorealistic picture saying: he's the one :-D I'd so laugh

Nice job, but I am wondering why your lighting is that of a flash from a camera. Most artists when they do this with no reference, they make the lighting work for them and "flash" is not working well. Also the perspective is very strange for it to not be from photo along with a background having a baseboard at the level of a chair rail in a room. Again usually when something is not from a photo the artists uses these areas to enhance the art. I would call BullSh!t on this if I was asked to crit
Usually I would never comment on something unless asked, but this showed up in my youtube recommended area and I clicked on it. Sorry if I am a dickhead & my crits are so harsh. I have a strong background in art and also a very good eye for technical details. I am not saying you are lying about no reference, I just don't buy it on this one. I am sure you can do it, but this one is a bit odd. Look up photo lighting techniques, it will help you out. Also composition will help. good luck
Sorry, I didn't mean to upset you. I was just mentioning something that seemed weird to me. I already had some private discussions with the artist and he explained everything to me. This is my last response, because I don't want to ruin a thread with a bunch of bickering. You know how youtube can get. Again sorry for insulting you. Like I said, I am sometimes a bit harsh and I apologize.

Anything that's done in photoshop that looks like a photo is a photo (that's why they call it photoshop, dummies). I've seen examples of drawings done by people in photoshop, which are very realistic, yet things that they did traditionally, with paint or pencil looks like a 2nd grader did it. I trust no one that relies on a computer to help render a realistic "painting," because it's just too easy to make the computer help with proportions, texture, color -basically every skill that need. Sorry.
Yeah I sort of agree with you. I think that if you do a painting, drawing etc. on the computer it just kind of ruins the point of it. I think its not as like treasurable. I mean, don't get me wrong you are really good but I would totally prefer doing it by hand.
I agree that the end result of a photorealistic digital from a reference photo is pointless, since you could just scan the picture and be done. But the real point is to build skills for things like this. And don't pretend it's easy just because the artist makes it look easy. (Try it!)
I have seen people who are really good with oil & acrylics but who can barely double-click a mouse, let-alone use Photoshop like this. Maybe it has something to do with what people spend their time practicing?
you mean its not quiet pointing in the correct direction? thats the only thing i could imagine is wrong with it. maybe about a billionth of a degree off.
you've some serious skill. i'd love to see you do some meaningful or symbolism based artwork rather than photo realism and dragons and werewolves. love it
Painting based entirely on the imagination... now that's a whole new dimension compared to painting with reference photos. Incredible job. 5/5
And I noticed you didn't use your usual method of starting on one eye as you did on your other photorealistic potraits. But you also achieved a great effect with it... great job and well done.
This was very well-made for something you did from your imagination. But her lips seems to be in a wierd angle to her nose and her left and right eye dont seem to belong to the same person. But it was a really good drawing and it gives like this ghost-feeling or something :D
well... i dont know. did you look at pictures and use merely lips from someone, eyes from another, or anything like that to assist? even still, its good but.. hard to believe that you hadnt glanced over a picture of a person to make youre youre getting a tecture right or something.
As a review of your art let's just say if you hadn't told me that person was ficticious and that this was w/out reference I'd probably think she was real..
looks like somebody I know :p

This was very well-made for something you did from your imagination. But her lips seems to be in a wierd angle to her nose and her left and right eye dont seem to belong to the same person. But it was a really good drawing and it gives like this ghost-feeling or something :D

well... i dont know. did you look at pictures and use merely lips from someone, eyes from another, or anything like that to assist? even still, its good but.. hard to believe that you hadnt glanced over a picture of a person to make youre youre getting a tecture right or something.

Chris, what's that command that you use at 1:17-1:18 to give the grainy texture to the girl's skin? Thanks!

As a review of your art let's just say if you hadn't told me that person was ficticious and that this was w/out reference I'd probably think she was real..

Oh man! No one I've ever seen can stand up to you when it comes to art. You're the reason I picked up drawing again. :D

I consider myself good at photorealistic painting, but I would have a real hard time matching this quality with no references!
Great work!
