That line in the lyrics refers to the "she" being Indiana and the reason why he is glad that she never fell in love with me is because you will always love more to that which might love you slightly less and that is where he so eloquently explains such a deep love for Indiana. I'm from Indiana and even though me and this state have always had a love-hate relationship, where else would i be.

I live in a small town in, you-guessed-it, Indiana, and this is by far my favorite song. Not because it mentions Indiana, but because it explores the universal feeling of wanting to be loved so eloquently.

"Indiana" captures the anguish of unrequited love and imagining the infinite what-might-have-been. Hypothetically, it could have been wonderful, but it's easy to get over missing out.
