We know this from what was displayed on projectors in Portal 1, and because Eli Vance and Isaac Kleiner mention Aperture Science in Half-Life 2 Episode 2, talking about a ship they had called the "Borealis". In Portal 2 in the underground levels there is a hiden door which leads to a drydock for the Borealis.
@osip667 basically he says that thanks to Gordon, Xen (the alien planet) is now under control (by who, we don't know), and Gordon is offered by these mystery figures a job, if he accepts he's put into stasis (Half Life 2 occurs) or he's killed if he declines. that's the jist of it :P

My idea about Gman. I think that in Half Life 3, or Episode 3, Gman will reveal himself to be some kind of alien from the Xen or as some sort of angel. If he is an alien, it would explain how he is able to teleport. But if he's an angel it would explain his "employers". But I'm probably wrong, actually I'm 90% sure I am but, I just wanted to voice my opinion.
Well , its your opinion, but at the start of Ep1 you can see vortigaunts pulling Gman from Gordon so I doubt that he is from Xen. It seems like vortigs know who or what Gman is and they quite hate him. I personally think that Gordon will make his own decision, if he will serve G-man or no and vorts will help him with it.
There was Xen who was under command of the mighty and wise Nihilanth who was once a slave (or still was) to the very powerful Combine. It seems the G-man is in some galactic entity above the Combine trying to control or balance them. Buut the G man works UNDER a group above him as a representative of sorts.

OMG! Could G-Man is alyx's Father? He did say: "when you see your FATHER relay these words..." She sees Eli Vance before the Borialis incident and right before she says "prepare for unforeseen consequences" you see G-Man flash up on the screen.
@noybw333 Its never really outright stated, but the basic story is they were slaves to the Nihilanth *the giant psychic portal controlling fetus final boss of HL1* and when you beat him, you freed them (not to mention opened the way for the combine to invade earth.) If you notice they wore collars and bracers in the first game, which they no longer had, Those not only kept them in control but actually diminished them. Hence why they can do so much more in HL2.
You know, if Alyx is somehow valuable to the G-Man like he says in the last scene, then why the hell did he leave her to die at the end of HL2? She'd be dead if it wasn't for the Vortigaunts.

In the first Half-Life game, he basically just sounded like the typical sleazy bureaucratic type. Once Half-Life 2 rolled around, they really amped up his surreal, otherworldly creepiness.
In the 7th grade I really wanted to use some of G-Mans speeches for my speech and debate class but my teacher wouldnt let me.... I ended up using one of Dr. Breen's speeches without her knowing it's *video game* origin... mwahaha - Still know most of it by heart :)

For this project we had to recite a (preferably political) speech written and published by someone else. Everyone else chose "I had a Dream" by martin luther king... I went with Half-life references.
@Sephlock Well i never really got as far as choosing and combining g-man snippets, as my teacher shut that project down asap, but I used the whole long opening "Welcome to City 17" by doctor breen (the speech heard in the background throughout the entire first chapter, on TVs etc. I used the sound files from the game to learn it.

I'm a self proclaimed Critic, I can point out alot of issues about this game, but honestly this game is deffinatly one of my favorites, Gman is a pecular character, but they don't break the fourth wall and tell you about him when your character doesn't know much. I like that, also the health bar, it makes a sense of death if you're not careful, much better than the bullet sponge other games have where you just heal for sitting still for a second.
Solid Snake & Big boss, Niko Bellic, John Marston, GLaDOS, G-Man are among the characters with the best voice acting in gaming history(in my opinion, of course)
@jasonbaroccofish I know, buying the book "raising the bar" was the best thing I ever did... so interesting! And you can really see their thought process and it helps kind of understand the story. hlfallout. net also has a great run down of the story and smart speculations.... I hope that when they 'finish' the gordan freeman story line, they go back and make a game/story that explains the "7-hour war" ...I also think that time period would make a good movie *hint hint valve*

@kobikobi963 Half Life 2 : After the events of Half Life 1 you are "offered" a job by the Gman (you didn't have a choice in fact) and then are put in stase but you re awaken by Gman saying he needs you again, you wake up on our world dominated by Dr Breen, the former administrator of Black Mesa who is now a puppet for an alien race called the Combine, the same alien race that had controlled the Nihilant in HL1. Gman apparently wants you to save the world.

@kobikobi963 You play as a scientist. You go to work in a secret facility and do some work for the government. Something bad happens at work during a test and another dimension is opened up releasing all manner of creatures that take control of the facility causing you to have to turn into a super hero to save your fellow scientist. The government intervenes but not to help, they kill scientist and monsters to cover the mess up. You fight your way through and eventually meet G-Man.

G Man, is such a interesting charactor in this game. I still can't label him good nor evil yet. Just as a advisor for Mr. Freeman for now. I still want to know who these higher beings, that are restricting G Man from certain things though. Maybe HL 2 Ep 3 / HL 3 will tell us that. So can not wait for the next chapter!!!

@noybw333 Its never really outright stated, but the basic story is they were slaves to the Nihilanth *the giant psychic portal controlling fetus final boss of HL1* and when you beat him, you freed them (not to mention opened the way for the combine to invade earth.) If you notice they wore collars and bracers in the first game, which they no longer had, Those not only kept them in control but actually diminished them. Hence why they can do so much more in HL2.

In the first Half-Life game, he basically just sounded like the typical sleazy bureaucratic type. Once Half-Life 2 rolled around, they really amped up his surreal, otherworldly creepiness.

In the 7th grade I really wanted to use some of G-Mans speeches for my speech and debate class but my teacher wouldnt let me.... I ended up using one of Dr. Breen's speeches without her knowing it's *video game* origin... mwahaha - Still know most of it by heart :)

@CapcomGod It was a "Speech and Debate" class, but we did other kinds of speeches than just debating. For this project we had to recite a (preferably political) speech written and published by someone else. Everyone else chose "I had a Dream" by martin luther king... I went with Half-life references.

@Sephlock Well i never really got as far as choosing and combining g-man snippets, as my teacher shut that project down asap, but I used the whole long opening "Welcome to City 17" by doctor breen (the speech heard in the background throughout the entire first chapter, on TVs etc. I used the sound files from the game to learn it.

From 5:40-5:57 what was going on? Were they threatening G-man? Cause he says:" We'll see about that.." By the way, I think G-man is a regular human being with the ability to go through different dimensions and his "associates" must be like him.

the answer lies in your statement, "a regular human being with the ability to travel between dimensions" a regular human being is deprieved from such abilities, even in half life universe. also vortiguants refer him as "something more than his appearence"and vorts do intercept his dimensional walking to get him unlinked with freeman, and then they pluck gordon freeman from his statis-cell, "derailing g-man's plans" or not as he is not seem so angered in his latter apperance

And he does teleport from different dimensions, because when you're alone with him, most of the time it's in a different reality and sometimes there is white lines zooming past where you and Gman are talking.

I'm a self proclaimed Critic, I can point out alot of issues about this game, but honestly this game is deffinatly one of my favorites, Gman is a pecular character, but they don't break the fourth wall and tell you about him when your character doesn't know much. I like that, also the health bar, it makes a sense of death if you're not careful, much better than the bullet sponge other games have where you just heal for sitting still for a second.

@jasonbaroccofish I know, buying the book "raising the bar" was the best thing I ever did... so interesting! And you can really see their thought process and it helps kind of understand the story. hlfallout. net also has a great run down of the story and smart speculations.... I hope that when they 'finish' the gordan freeman story line, they go back and make a game/story that explains the "7-hour war" ...I also think that time period would make a good movie *hint hint valve*

@noybw333 I have aspirations of being a movie director, and apparently* after a night of drinking/talking about video games (and Half-Life in particular), I stood up on a picnic table and made a public declaration that I will be the first person to ever make a great video game movie, and if I have my way it will be based on the first Half-Life game.
*I was blacked out at the time, but there's no doubt in my mind that I said this or that I'll do my damndest to make it happen. :D
