Why cant more black women today be like this. She is a throw back to how black women use to perform and the imagine they created to add some mystery to them. Vivendi owns hundreds of other media venues including Janelle, but frankly shes not marketable, all the talent in the world won't market her to mass media, and that's fine. Janelle monae is very marketable. Travel around the world and really see what music people are listening to and fashion and you'll find that in the realm of live performance and theatricality she is extremely marketable, they just havn't done so well.

i feel so bad not realizing this young lady even exsisted, i have been living in the Atl for the past 10yrs and never heard of this astonishing talent untill my return to london, unfortunetly for us poor listeners if one is not in the clicke out there then one is not reconized.

The performance wouldn't work as effectively if her actions were more frenetic and her outfit was over the top. By scaling down and and drawing the attention to herself with the small details, gestures without excessive movement she actually enhances the dramatic potential of the song and her performance. The emphasis is on the music. Though its a well worn cliche, less is more.
I absolutely love Janelle and this track is simply stunning. However, the orchestra and volume levels weren't quite up to scratch. But still rather splendid.
OMG... this woman is the real deal. The voice, the image, the balance. The fact that she can pull off this opus live is stunning beyond compare. I can't think of a single woman in music today with this level of talent. Brilliant!
I don't know what it is...literally because her music doesn't fit in any particular "type". However it is absolutely wonderful, refreshing and it makes you understand and appreciate each instrument and musical element not to mention her voice is so pure and a pleasure to listen to.
All I can say is finally, a true singer, Janelle Monae is a singer that came to the world singing for real. So I say finally, finally a young woman that can sure enough sing, can I get a for real from the music lovers?
I love the singing, but I would have enjoyed it more if she would have swayed or moved her head to the music a little bit when she wasn't singing in between the instrumental breaks like the women would do back in the early days of jazz.

I don't know what it is...literally because her music doesn't fit in any particular "type". However it is absolutely wonderful, refreshing and it makes you understand and appreciate each instrument and musical element not to mention her voice is so pure and a pleasure to listen to.

I love the singing, but I would have enjoyed it more if she would have swayed or moved her head to the music a little bit when she wasn't singing in between the instrumental breaks like the women would do back in the early days of jazz.

Such a big voice for a petite lil lady. Good things come in small packages.Jan is awesome.

It is absolutely SINFUL that she is not best selling artist of the year. And after her first incarnation of her career is complete she would do a great jazz act. I would pay good money to hear that velvety voice in some smoky club.

@tbjamesatl I love her music. I've been around them music industry for a long while and the trick for her surviale will be to produce music for other artist, her talent alone will not keep her alive. Shes not marketable in the states.
