Wehrmacht means "military", making up the Wehrmacht were the Kreigmarine (navy), Leer (army) and Luftwaffe (airforce). In the beginning they were about the same quality as US troops. Twards the end of the war the Leer and Luftwaffe were almost entirely made up of boys and old men. The SS was the security branch of the Nazi party, it was not an "army". They were trained virtually the same. The difference was that the SS were fanatics who swore an oath to Hitler.

It was the air force and industrial might that won the war. Google the German losses in Normandy and compare them to allied losses of about 53,000 KIA as opposed to some 24,000 German, even though they had a much higher numeriacal superiority, not to mention 100 to 1 in planes

It was easy for the Germans to kick butt in the Hurtgen Forest. The Americans could only go through it a couple of ways. The Germans just had to concentrate their firepower in a few places and the Americans would get slaughtered. Germans had better tanks but not enough of them. As far as soldiers the Wermacht was scraping the bottom for replacements. The waffen SS had good troops because they recruited foriegners and had the best equipment. Germany had already been bled white by the Soviets.

The Germans did get reamed pretty good after this by the 101st airborne, elements of the 10th Armored (at Bastogne) and the 3rd Army at the Bulge. When the weather cleared all their unfueled tanks could do is make easy targets for the US Army Air Corp. Maybe if the krauts didn't have a fool for a supreme leader they could have held out. It also helped that the allied armies had loads of supplies once Antwerp got sorted out. German units were still using horses and wagons for gods sake.

My great grandpa fought in this war. 4th battalion of darbys rangers. Dispanded at the battle of cisterna, italy in the anzio campaighn, and then joined the FSSF(basicaly a suicide division) and is still alive today. I'm proude of him and sad for him too. T.T

There were mostly execution-squad doing that job(and they did it not for fun, that was job and reasons to do it was to deport partisans ect.). Also i bet aircraft was thing what made those big civilian losses. And many executioners or those death camp guards were not ALL germans, there was Hungarian guards and some russians also.

What made the American soldier better than the German soldier was a strong noncommissioned/commissioned officer corps that at the lower/middle level could make tactical decisions on there own if the situation warranted it without necessarily going through the chain of command.
