Now I know why I keep failing at front crawl: My swimming instructor keeps telling me to put thumbs in first. I think I should go to a different swimming pool ._.
Ok. First being too high in the water is NOT a bad thing. Im a national level swimmer, and what do you think those racing suits do to you when you put them on? They make you higher in the water, as long as your head isnt deep, your fine just looking down. This is not a correct technique and it is a very innefficient way of swimming. There were a FEW tips that werent bad, but most WAS not accurate. ALSO to clear up any confusion, the splashing at the end is normal if your sprinting which he was.
@element509 Hi there, not disagreeing with your comments, this is why we recently re-did this video. Please see the video mentioned in the annotation that runs throughout the whole video. I would be interested to know your thoughts.
@simplyhike I watched the other video and there is still quite some error. Starting with the head positioning. From the example I saw in the video the head was too high. You just need to be looking down at the bottem of the pool without pressing your head into the water. The arms were all wrong. The arm was entering well past the midline on the inside. It needs to enter straight with the shoulder. Then when the other arm reaches the ear, rotate from the hips.
@simplyhike Then on the catch. Well there is no catch, the forearm needs to be to where the hand is pointing at the bottem of the pool. That was not done which causes slip on the water and a useless stroke. Also the arm moved out from the body way too much, then you lose all the grip on the water, to avoid that try to have the arm enter straight with the shoulder, then it could go out a little bit, but then needs to come in with the midline of the body.
@simplyhike Also when the arm is coming around it needs to be closer to the body, like the example shown it just wastes a significant amount of energy. And the example is also still pretty low in the water. Try and press the CHEST, not the head, the chest down on the water and that will bring your legs up. The higher you are in the water the more effortlessley you glide through the water. Just like those body suits that were banned from competition, they made you really high in the water
i'm affraid that when i turn my head sideways to breathe, then water might come into my ear. i'm gonna be swimming at a lake. i'm not gonna have those special hats. is water gonna come into my ear/s? any advice to avoid it anyone?
Not sure how you can call this the PERFECT Crawl? As a WSI it is my job to help others improve their stroke.
1.) The catch should be loose and about 3/4 in front of your head. With elbows bent
2.) You should have shoulder roll up to and not more then 30 degrees. Helps the recovery and elbows.
3.) The head should be pointed about 2 feet ahead and roll with your shoulders. When it's time to breath roll the body down to your toes with a slight angle.

i think the head is unusually high in the "how it should be" presentation. and there is no gliding phase. I dont think this is a particularly good style
@MrKeepnit100 I had this trouble as well at first (and I still fight with it). Use a pool buoy and focus on arching your back while not moving your legs. I found it helped me after just a few days.
putting it all together makes it all fall apart eh? :D anyway, granted that the last swim was horrible, all his points make sense. additionally, to keep your legs from sinking, tilt your pelvis outwards (much like how a woman with good posture struts her behind), stomach in and chest out. head position is contentious, but somewhere between 45 degrees should be alright as long as you can keep your legs high.
Yes, it was a splashing mess at the end. The form was too poor for any serious competition. Yeah, the man might have the brute force, but his form was very terrible.
Quality of the video is not too good. May I suggest you use zoom and more slow motion to illustrate your points?
Hi there, really its up to you, generally in training you would breathe from either side to avoid straining one side of the neck and building up a muscle inbalance
i have a question? im applying for membership and i need to know the front crawl. it looks like the freestlye. is it the same? and in the vid, when he breathes, he is going left then right, then left and right. can i just stay one side to breathe ?
@greenxall4him Freestyle and frontcrawl are the same thing. The reason the front crawl is used in the freestyle compeition is because it is the fastest stroke, but in theory you can use any stroke you want in a freestyle competition, hence the name "free" style,
I thought all of this was building up to a beautiful, efficient gliding style pushing through the water with apparent ease. What I saw at the end just looked like a splashfest.
bad video!!! here is showed how you need to do whit hands but just half part...becose for somebody how dont know how to swim this style,is gona dont know what to do when hands come in water...
I swim faster than him and front crawl is my worst stroke. Lol. TY for the good tips though!

"Entering the water with your fingers open reduces your speed dramatically".
is this really true? because i have those gloves that get you in the habbit of keeping your fingers open ALL the time.

You are all complaining about the last swim cuz its splashy, but look at the speed he got there. Maybe it was splashy but it was pretty fast!

Good demonstration, but would be even better if it was slowed down as well, it's too fast sometimes to see what's going on.

wow that last swim was a bit crappy, whats with all the splashing? Fair enough in a competition but for demonstration purposes? not good.

About the hand part, is it also good if the stroke enters with the middle finger in the water, but about 1º instead of flat? or 0.5º?
