Of course, this was written by Bob Nolan (of the Sons of the Pioneers) in 1936, and Hank Williams Sr. did a version in 1948 (which is why it's a classic)
For years I thought the Frankie Lane version was the best ever till I heard this,it's the greatest. He had a very distingtive voice as all good singers do and I now appreciate, him even more.
It's wonderful to hear Burl Ives again, and this song will always be one of his best. Walter Brennan also made this one of his hits. Thank you for posting it.
Great singer. I used to think of him as America's grandfather. I think many many people enjoyed his voice and acting. Miss this era, the stars the singers, the movies etc. Thanks goodness for these videos/recordings.
Thank God i was introduced to Burl after coming across him on the Fantastic Mr. Fox soundtrack. Up there with Harry Nilsson for vocal smoothness you just want to pour into a glass and drink
I love Burl Ives. I played his music for my children when they were all little. Too bad this one wasn't on those albums! Seems like I heard this on a western.
These days some of us only drink water from plastic bottles purchased at the grocery store. So much for progress and mounds of plastic trash filling our landfills. We need to go back to a time when water was water, not some fancy named liquid in an expensive bottle.
as a child listening to him is relaxed me made me feel safe ....hey dont for get the frosty the snow man song ??? Bill Dignard smiths falls ontario canada,
Every year at this time I long to lessen to Burl Ives he looks and sounded just like my daddy. He's been gone for many years now and when I want to remenber how he sounded I lessen the Cool Water her often sang that song along with alittle bitty tear let me down. Thank you for the music on this site and may God bless and keep you safe.... Grandma Scott
Being a hot summer night, I went to the fridge and got two cups of water for my daughter and me. I gave her the cup and I just had this song in my head. I told her how I used to hear a song about "cool clear water" and how I would associate drinking water with this song when I was a kid. Glad I googled it and heard Burl Ives! This is probably the version I used to hear over 40 years ago when very young, and so glad to share nostalgia with my kid over the speakers as she listens, playing DSI.
There are bundles of people around who are overrated as singers, people with hit records who couldn't sing for a supper in a real world. This man isn't one of them.
many thanks. How great to rediscover Burl. I had some of his LPs many years but they were stolen anf I haven't been able to find him on CD. I was always amazed that such a sweet voice came out of such a big bear of a man.
Utrolig flott musikk som farer rett inn i hjertet!! Skulle onske vi hadde flere som senor Burl Ives....

@natoland shades of monty python! Well, back in the day, they didn't have fancy electronic sound mixers that could create whatever sound you wanted.
