People are complaining that these people are not happy, believe me that they are living more of a stress free life than say US or UK or even Australia and Canada. They dont worry about taxes and Further income and what not, 2 dollars a day is about 90 to 100 rupees, which can buy them the food they need, they just eat less. im not saying we shouldnt do anyhting beacuse it is bad that they can live bigger dreams its just that not ALL of them are misreble.
Any notice that the streets of Indian cities look like in "normal times" what Japan's towns and cities look like after they were devastated with that massive earthquake and massive tsunami?
well, in buenos aires there are a lot of big slums, bolivian peruvian and paraguayan people live in them, it's really sad to see those people living on that way
Im not kiddin' but i saw once a old lady making clay pots out of, cow dung and clay mixed together ^0^ shocking..... They never tell u that the public, but its true. U got to see it to beleive it ^0^, most indians dont mind this but alot others do! Love u india :(
these kind of "rich kids" can do nothing in future except spending money. the more these kind of kids, the worse future your country have. should give them stress of life, let them know that earning money is difficult.
As long as helping the impoverished is big business, poverty will not be overcome - or even have a dent put into it for that matter. Keeping people poor is in the best interest of every third world charity. If we feed, clothe and house the poor, the business we call charity would cease to be.
i hope you all realize that the slums are just a small part of mumbai. the rest of mumbai is a great city with a lot of business and richness to it. in fact, apartments in mumbai can be more expensive than those in new york city! i hope your image of mumbai isn't tainted by the slums. i have lived in mumbai for years and never set foot in a slum.
this worries me, the people in the Slums respect these homes and communities which they have crafted themselves, redevelopment of slums into municipal housing just leads to urban decay. Just give them decent toilets and medical in the slums
That`s for suryakiller slumdog millonaire give a view how the 55 % Mumbai population is living, I think that you are part of farce called superior caste to keep those peoples under situation, I was there in 2006 and was suprised with slum along side Mumbai airport , all the topics in the movie are true.
slumdog millionaire was a stupid film made for westerners who got what they wanted to portray bombay/mumbai in a way they wanted to portray it slumdog millionaire is more fiction less truth.
I really do not like the idea of this. It is going to take a ton of demolishment to local homes in the slum and how many of the residents are actually going to be able to afford a middle class apartment? Also, it's not like they just bought the houses they are currently living in. They actually built the homes themselves and that does give this a much more personal effect.
To all those western idiots who say Money does not=happiness. Then please go to India and abandon your western way of life! Of course we all know you won't do that!
Money does not=happiness.............go live in a slum and tell me if you wouldn't be happier living in a rich neighborhood! Go without food and tell you wouldn't be happier eating a gourmet meal. Go without clothing and tell me how much money contributes to a better life! Idiot!!! It's a lot better being rich then it is to be poor!
@jewishwarrior666 when you have money you appreciate things less. when you don't, you appreciate every tiny thing in life more. i live in india and though i am middle class and have never been to the slum, i have met people from there, and i can tell you they have a whole different perspective on life. if money= happiness, then why are the rich in america the population with the highest depression rate in the world?
You're right, there's nothing good about a loveless millionaire. Being poor is not the worse thing to happen to a person but these slums are horrible. There solution is building them 225 sq foot rooms with running water & that's a vast improvement. Now there's poor & then there's destitute, these slums are destitution. Reminds me of a movie "City of Joy"., it was pretty good & tried to show the agony of survival in indian slums.
It's a shame that we are so spoiled here in America. These people have barely anything and they are still better off than us. They are happy and we are spoiled. It's rather sad if you ask me.
Why don't you go live in an indian slum defecating in the open right in front of your front door for everyone to see and then tell me how happy you would be. It's called being institutionalized! They have lived in such ridiculously harsh conditions starting from birth that they have grown accustomed to it like an abused spouse, they get use to it! India shining......yeah my shoes!!!!
@jewishwarrior666 hey, india is shining. in the last 30 years india has grown tremendously. the poverty rate has dropped over 20 percent. the economy is booming. india has produced 2 of the top 5 richest men in the world. just about every respected economist in the world believes in 60 years india will qualify to be a first world nation. don't judge all of us based on slums. there are more people in the middle and upper classes in india than the entire population of america.
@jewishwarrior666 every country has problems. recent statistics show 1 in 7 americans are living in poverty and can't afford to eat. millions of americans live in dirty ghettos run by gangs, dilapidated houses miles from civilization, or rusty trailers. why don't you try living in those conditions and tell me how happy you'd be? don't badmouth an entire country, because every country has their problems. india is fixing these problems much faster than anyone else is fixing their problems.
@pellezpellez why would anyone living in their own excrement, wondering if they will live to see tomorrow, be happier than 'well to do urbanites'? their basic survival needs arent being met!
SLUM:

poor poor but they speak two languages, that's amazing. Poverty in my country (Mexico) I think is a lot worse and so ignorants, people there at least know what's going on around them
La pobreza no es peor en México. NO chingues.
you mean to say they speak Enlgish well, correct?? LOL had to correct YOUR English! And yes they do have some room for improvment however, so do you and it is probably your FIRST language!! It is Mine as well, and My Hindi speaking Husband's second language. I do help him now and again with grammer however his vocabulary is amazing!
Mj, fool, why should it matter whether Indians speak English at all? They're an ancient country 2,500 years old-- they were around well before English was even a language.
Sanskrit and its modern descendants (like Hindi, Marathi) have been used as languages for far longer than English.
So speaking English is a stupid measure of one's level of education. I've met Indians who speak no English, but write brilliantly in Hindi/Tamil (or speak German/French). That's totally fine.
I see where you were trying to go with that, but your wrong English is the official language of business, and learning the language will dramatically increase your chances of ever being successful in this life time. Foreign countries dont make their children learn english in school for no reason.....
@Jonsbk In fact, English is predominantly of Germanic and Roman/Greek origins. The Grecian style of writing which was influential to the Romans probably had roots in Egyptian hieroglyphics, which in turn was a development of Sumerian script. It is probably from Sumer/ Mesopotamia that all written languages have evolved.
@Jonsbk Well said, I'm a U.S. native and most people from India I know speak english better than me. By that I mean their more correct with their grammer. They are also are repectful, and they address you as sir, or brother
As someone who has lived in the prosperity of a superpower and the immense poverty in India (alongside its immense wealth), and as someone who has very thoroughly researched the area of slum rehabilitation and is familiar with the great work of Dr Qureishi, I firmly believe that the development of slums by rich developers who drive expensive cars and live in expensive homes while people are driving is inconscionable. It is clear that they have money, not the best interest of the people at heart.
This has good intentions... but the people in who currently lives in these slums will lose their jobs.. all they will have is a house. What do you do with house, but no income
yeh, they're doing a good thing, but they're not taking into account those who are not registered residents. They will be left homeless and also jobless because they're going to remove the pottery and leather shops their
