I want to do this so bad. was the swap really hard I can pick up an engine for about $1700 with a 5 speed tranny all ready to go with ecu starter ect. And a roller foxbody preferably a notch cause I like them for about a grand. Did it take a long time for the swap and anything really special like having to mod stuff or just fab up some engine mounts and stuff. as must as I love the 5.0L the 2jz engines are like sex haha

@MrJplz2514 Well, going from a rather torqueless rotary to a V8 is an uprgrade. Also, I hear that rotarys are not the most reliable engine to mod. An LS2 or LS3, for example, is rather cheap and plentiful with lots of aftermarket support, so it's a great upgrade. Going from a 5.0L to a 3.0L is a downgrade, so I do not see the benefit other than being different. Or you just happen to have a built turbo 2J-Z laying around, and your Mustang is missing an engine (kinda sounds like Tokyo Drift!).
@pchra437 I would say that it all depends on what you're building your car to do. If it's a drag car, the 5.0 is a great place to start, and a cheaper alternative to a 2JZ. If it's going to be a track whore, a fat 5.0 won't be as quick as the smaller 2JZ. From what I've read on this guy's thread, he's upgrading from a stock 2.3L 4-banger. I personally would have said to keep the stout 2.3 and turbo it up, but to each his own. :)

But if you built a forged bottom, max effort 5.0 vs an equally built 2JZ, I would lean towards the 5.0 (displacement). Even if the V8 is 100lbs heavier, I think the power potential of the larger engine would prevail. Hell, it might even be a tie. But, yeah, I see where you're coming from. I once thought my 11 sec. nitrous 2.0L 4 banger was the s**t. Now I want a turbo/supercharged V8! Lol !
@pchra437 I this is old but... a stock block from a 5.0 will still only hold 550 to 600 horse. The internals you buy can hold alot more but the block can't handle it. The supra motor can hold 800hp stock. Thats impressive right there. You can have a 10 sec stang if done right. There is one on youtube that ran 9.81. So the sjz is a bad motor.

OK so i just bought a 1988 mustang LX 2.3 5 speed. now the current engine is a turd, and i have read that putting a turbo on a non turbo 2.3 is a waste of time and money. so now i'm faced with this question- if i want this to be my drifting car what should i drop under the hood for a motor? SVO 2.3t is good but really outdated so i'm thinking 2JZ, RB26, 13B-REW, or maybe a BMW M3 twin turbo straight six... PS i already have a 1990 5.0 w/ 331 stroker so dont tell me to put a V8 in it

Also, the only V8 that I have ever regarded at efficient is the LS motor series for its power to weight ratio. I would like an intelligent response if you have anything to say back. :)

@poppishogunz i dont get why you v8 guys think that straight 6s cost the moon to build up? fact is they have almost half the parts of a v8 and are a much simpler design. and its proven these engines can hold 800hp pretty easely theres a few daily drivin supras running those numbers on stock internals. nothing wrong with v8s at all just toyota built the 1jz and 2jz engines with forced internals from factory, not to mention an overbuilt lubrication system.
this is a really random, but awesome swap. Don't see why you would put an Inline 6 into a car that's meant for a V8. But either way I don't think think anyone else has a 2JZ Mustang

why? i'm not trashing the guy or anything. i'm not a dye hard domestic or import fan. i have respect for any fast well built vehicle, in this is deff fast and very well built. i think he did a great job. it is unique and it will be very fast, but there is no denying that you could have squeezed more out of the 5.0 than a 2jz. there is no replacement for displacement. but it is fun the get lots of power out of a smaller engine.

Carrol Shelby did the exact same thing with the cobra back then...he took a sissy girls car and dropped a better engine in it...this car was probably some worthless POS 2.3 lx before he fixed it up. And FYI the 2jz is capable of TONS of power...Then again so is the little 4 banger the car most likely came with...but that's beside the point.

@poppishogunz The motor in this car has made nearly 800rwhp (900+ crank), I have $2000 in the short block and the head is bone stock.
You can pick these motors up on ebay for $1800-$2500 complete! and they will hold 800rwhp reliably. Don't believe me? Google it my friend.

@poppishogunz i dont get why you v8 guys think that straight 6s cost the moon to build up? fact is they have almost half the parts of a v8 and are a much simpler design. and its proven these engines can hold 800hp pretty easely theres a few daily drivin supras running those numbers on stock internals. nothing wrong with v8s at all just toyota built the 1jz and 2jz engines with forced internals from factory, not to mention an overbuilt lubrication system.

why? i'm not trashing the guy or anything. i'm not a dye hard domestic or import fan. i have respect for any fast well built vehicle, in this is deff fast and very well built. i think he did a great job. it is unique and it will be very fast, but there is no denying that you could have squeezed more out of the 5.0 than a 2jz. there is no replacement for displacement. but it is fun the get lots of power out of a smaller engine.
