  • The bunkai I know calls for low kicks, even if in our dojo we kick higher in the kata. Chances are in Otsuka's time kata wasn't so detached from reality as it is these days. It is so easy to succumb into replacing an effective technique with something flashy just to look good. Well, with this version there is no way to win a tournament, you need to show your skillz on a tournament, it is not enough to show strength, speed, control and understanding of the kata.

  • Our roots of Butokukan Karate go through Funakoshi also. Its very nostalgic to see these that are so similar to our current 5 Pinan's. Great find.

  • That could be right but it was Funakoshi son takiaha (i think that's the way to spell his name, sorry if not ) that modified kata-te and not Master funakoshi ,he was okinawain after all and kara-te was for life and death and not sport .let's us all hope we can still more as well as Otsuka at 75.

  • I dnt knw much abt Wado yu. But, I believe kicks are low, because Otsuka Sensei used low kicks as in traditional way.. As I know, high kicks came later into karate. But, Otsuka didnt follow the modified way of Funakoshi.

  • Nice answer, you can ask an old karateka of 75 years do a jodan maegeri, how many among us who will perform as the Meijin does at his age

  • Why are his front kicks so low?

  • Dear Friend,

    Sorry for my little english.

The kick is low because old Otsuka followed the old sistem of the kick, like Funakoshi in 1925.

In a lesson in Italy Shiomitsu, head instructor of Renmei in Europe, suggest this way. In 7° Khion Kumite suggest like second attack, a maegeri chudan, not mawashi geri like one do in Wadokai.

The ordinary answer is "Otsuka was old, in the movie. He was 75".

Olso in kata Niseishi, like way of Renmei, the sokuto yoko geri are low.

    Regards from Rome,

    Maurizio

  • Fantastic to see the founder of wado ryu perform this kata.
