Man, that is fucking scary - the sash is right up, she's not "quite" sure which line is the right one, what appears to be a welding gas line is taped up, and this with a compound SHE KNOWS WILL FUME LIKE A BASTARD... I love the multicolored molecular models... I REALLY think his description would have Schlesinger & Bauer spinning in their respective graves - he hears boron ANYTHING and thinks of anybody BUT Schlesinger or Brown? As fucking IF
@douro20 Well many friends shown me their doctoral work nicely printed in hardcover and I think it is just a thing you do for yourself since these kind of materials while "published" are not widely distributed unless there is a need for it. I would guess they usually print only enough copies to archive them properly and have something available for people inquiring about the work through officials channels. I bet some PhD students work is very widely printed and distributed.
Does the BBr3 not react with the plastic syringe? I woulda figured you'd use a glass syringe for that stuff. I worked with that stuff once in undergrad, and to say its 'fuming' is an understatement; 'terrifying' maybe... 'vicious'... more appropriate descriptions
Just saw a story about soaking cotton fabric in a solution of boron, then cooking it to burn off the original fiber. You're left with a network of boron carbide material that is extremely strong, yet still flexible. The headline was 'bulletproof T-shirts', which may be a bit of an exaggeration, but still interesting.
I like this compound so much... It is a very strong lewis acid and you can use it to split Alkyl Aryl Ether, making olefin polymerisations and friedel- cafts reactions... I love this boron compound. :)
I don't mean to be sexist but she is very lovely and I wouldn't mind seeing a lot more of her. I know that completely ignores the point but I love seeing hard chemistry done by a woman.
Yeah, I have a wicked fast Internet connection (1Gbps ethernet), and this video is taking ages to load. I've watched several other videos today, and this is the first to have problems.
BROMINE is KING,.. or at least very high in the .. well Carbon is very important,.. but BROMINE is quite attractive... as is silver, Gold,.. Pt, Ti, and Pd,.. to name a few.
Wow, HBr not only a strong acid but also very poisonous, good thing she just took a tiny drop of the BBr3 compound, cause if she had used the whole liquid there she could have poisoned herself.
But what an Awkward taste, I mean seriously...She loves Boron? Man it's the same thing as saying "I love Arsenide!" :d
Fume hoods mostly vent to the outside. Not a problem because you are dealing with small quantities of toxins that are readily dispersed in the air. On an industrial scale there would generally be no venting to the outside.
quick story: was watching "The Fifth Element" preview in a theater years ago with a friend. After it was over we turned to each other and said, "why would they make a movie about Boron?!?"
So, to clarify what i said. Yes, Kelvin is the SI unit for temperature. I left Kelvin out because she said -46 degrees. Kelvin can't be negative. I just said Celsius because in all reality, they are the same (parallel) units, just 273 degrees off.
"Because she is British, I'll assume it was Celsius."
Because she is working in a chemistry lab, it isn't unreasonable to assume Celsius. Despite living in the U.S., I've never had a science class, period, which preferred the American measurement over the metric.
The pure form should be colorless. And here it is! Well, it's orange.

I didn't hear "wet oxygen" in the video, so I'm going off that, but if I'm wrong, I'm sure it was a slip of the tongue.

Question: Where do fume hoods exhaust too?
Are all the fume hoods exhausted through the same vent?
and;
Is there any filter or other mechanism to prevent reactions in the fume hood, or is it so diluted with air that's its not possible?
