  • The pure form should be colorless. And here it is! Well, it's orange.

  • this video is boron.

  • NOOOOO he cut his hair!

  • @tab2do Dude this was more than a year ago =P

  • "So, to me, it's just a triangle of aluminium." made me laugh quite loudly.

  • nobody does it like molten boron

  • E=MC2 Now im smart like then

  • @mehn19364 Equations are nothing without the understanding behind them.

  • @Aviatorsmith yep.

  • @mehn19364 what does that mean then hmmm

  • kool

  • lol i thought wet oxygen was called water

  • @interpird350 Air doesn't have a very high O2 percentage, really.

"Wet" oxygen would be super-cold and/or under high pressure.

I didn't hear "wet oxygen" in the video, so I'm going off that, but if I'm wrong, I'm sure it was a slip of the tongue.

  • My knob is enormous

  • 0:42 Albert Einstein there Has a pencil dick!

  • Debbie may like Boron - but I promise you she stays away from Boron Hydrides....

  • is it just me or is the gas purple?

  • I am a 11 year old american boy, and you are one of the many channels that has goten me interested in chemistry. I thank you for posting these videos, and I hope you keep making them.

  • 'its completely flat... well except for this little nob here' :)

  • I honestly read the title as "Boron Triboride" and thinking "this is an unusual compound!"

  • LOL @ tah-daah :D

  • Man, that is fucking scary - the sash is right up, she's not "quite" sure which line is the right one, what appears to be a welding gas line is taped up, and this with a compound SHE KNOWS WILL FUME LIKE A BASTARD... I love the multicolored molecular models... I REALLY think his description would have Schlesinger & Bauer spinning in their respective graves - he hears boron ANYTHING and thinks of anybody BUT Schlesinger or Brown? As fucking IF

  • Hmmmm, yep Debbie is hot..

Oh and the guy with the crazy hair is awesome.

  • This is not boroning at all!

  • Do all the doctoral theses, if accepted, get published in hardcover?

  • @douro20 Well many friends shown me their doctoral work nicely printed in hardcover and I think it is just a thing you do for yourself since these kind of materials while "published" are not widely distributed unless there is a need for it. I would guess they usually print only enough copies to archive them properly and have something available for people inquiring about the work through officials channels. I bet some PhD students work is very widely printed and distributed.

  • The professor is left-handed, just like my chemistry professor and his assistent and myself too :D

are there more left handed chemists out there?

  • @skuul666 I work on chemistry and I am left handed too :D

  • boron girl :D

  • Dog toys again?

  • Does the BBr3 not react with the plastic syringe? I woulda figured you'd use a glass syringe for that stuff. I worked with that stuff once in undergrad, and to say its 'fuming' is an understatement; 'terrifying' maybe... 'vicious'... more appropriate descriptions

  • Boron Tribromide chemistry is just a traingle of aliminium :D

  • most awesome christmas tree decorations ever. :)

  • The triangle doesn't look equilateral!

  • Just saw a story about soaking cotton fabric in a solution of boron, then cooking it to burn off the original fiber. You're left with a network of boron carbide material that is extremely strong, yet still flexible. The headline was 'bulletproof T-shirts', which may be a bit of an exaggeration, but still interesting.

    Great video.

  • But the nob here is quite useful.. I should be there just to say: "That's what she said!"

  • Is Boron your only lover darling?

  • 0:05 she loves porn?

  • @gunnerpig oh yeh !

  • she is very very attractive

  • @auntygomez

    rofl :L

  • I like this compound so much... It is a very strong lewis acid and you can use it to split Alkyl Aryl Ether, making olefin polymerisations and friedel- cafts reactions... I love this boron compound. :)

  • Question: Where do fume hoods exhaust too?

Are all the fume hoods exhausted through the same vent?

    and;

Is there any filter or other mechanism to prevent reactions in the fume hood, or is it so diluted with air that's its not possible?

  • Boron?...this just fascinated me...

  • the girl is as cool as the professor

  • Debbie is awesome.

  • it is completely flat... well there is a little nob here - LOL!!! classic prof...

  • @Mudsta I was just thinking about that but then I saw your comment

  • Comment removed

  • i love boron too

  • THESE VIDEOS ARE SOOOOO GOOD!

All you guys keep chemistry so interesting.

Keep making these videos as we all love them.

  • Great vid. We always used BH4 in our lecture problems as a source of hydride.

  • I don't mean to be sexist but she is very lovely and I wouldn't mind seeing a lot more of her. I know that completely ignores the point but I love seeing hard chemistry done by a woman.

  • @DasMustafah that's not sexist, man. that's nature :)

  • am i the only one who has a super duper internet connection that isn't workign properly on this video? its bugging the heck outta me!

  • Yeah, I have a wicked fast Internet connection (1Gbps ethernet), and this video is taking ages to load. I've watched several other videos today, and this is the first to have problems.

  • @byzzers It takes me on average 30 minutes to buffer a 5 minute video

  • Were those a couple of Giggly Wigglies taped together? =D

  • I Still want to touch his bush.

  • AWESOME!!

BROMINE is KING,.. or at least very high in the .. well Carbon is very important,.. but BROMINE is quite attractive... as is silver, Gold,.. Pt, Ti, and Pd,.. to name a few.

  • In my student days (long time ago) I used to think of boron as a 'boring' element. Not very much references in my old chemistry book.

  • 2:47 hahhahahah!

    good vid though

  • boron tribromide - a triangle with a nob:P

    Another great video.

  • This beep new page layout. I've inadvertently clicked on the thumbs down sorry.

  • boron is boring

  • Oh Debbie I knew I wasn't good enough for you but it hurts all the more to know I lost you to a metalloid. Boron, forsooth I am thine enemy.

  • great video

  • to me its just a triangle of alooominiyum LOL

  • nice vid, but round off the corners on that triangle before you hurt someone XD

  • BORON IS BORING! jk, i just thought it sounded witty.

  • Wow, HBr not only a strong acid but also very poisonous, good thing she just took a tiny drop of the BBr3 compound, cause if she had used the whole liquid there she could have poisoned herself.

But what an Awkward taste, I mean seriously...She loves Boron? Man it's the same thing as saying "I love Arsenide!" :d

  • Do fume hoods have some kind of chemical reactor inside that nullifies the toxic gases that enter it... or do you just dump it into the air outside?

  • Fume hoods mostly vent to the outside. Not a problem because you are dealing with small quantities of toxins that are readily dispersed in the air. On an industrial scale there would generally be no venting to the outside.

  • Which one do you like more, Boron or Crunchy Nut Corn Flakes?

  • @SirMildredPierce That's a tough choice, because they both stay crunchy in milk.

  • Just a triangle of Aluminum makes me think of aluminum tribromide.

  • Very interesting :) We're doing Lewis Acids/Bases in A2 chemistry at the moment.

  • Another great video from which we learn alot. 'its just a triangle' ;)

  • I read it first as "Boron Triboride", and thinking that was the stupidest name ever.

  • Does it always ignite as a yellow/orange flame ?

  • what is this compound used for in the modern world if anything?

  • It will be celsius. Fahrenheit is rarely used in the UK now unless talking about summer temperatures.

  • More on Boron. :)

  • your "periodic table of vegetables" bleached out! =o

  • Wikipedia has a good article about the fascinating Gilbert N Lewis, and an interesting theory about his death...

  • Nice to see people who are enthusiastic about their work :)

  • quick story: was watching "The Fifth Element" preview in a theater years ago with a friend. After it was over we turned to each other and said, "why would they make a movie about Boron?!?"

  • When talking about temperatures, she needs to specify if if is Celsius or Fahrenheit. Because she is British, I'll assume it was Celsius.

  • Few people use Fahrenheit in modern science research.

  • @bodinian

Except for Liberia, Burma and the US nobody uses Fahrenheit, especially in science.

  • She is British AFAIK, do people still use farenheit in labs?

  • Could be Kelvin. In our lab everyone uses kelvin for temperature to avoid theses instances, and from what I've seen, Kelvin is the standard.

  • @bodinian She's a scientist. Celsius is the scientific unit for temperature.

  • loooooooooooooll... Do you go to school??

The scientific unit for temperature is.. KELVIN.

  • really - I thought it was Kelvin

  • So, to clarify what i said. Yes, Kelvin is the SI unit for temperature. I left Kelvin out because she said -46 degrees. Kelvin can't be negative. I just said Celsius because in all reality, they are the same (parallel) units, just 273 degrees off.

  • @speadskater oops - I didn't see the - ;-) I suppose - kelvin degrees doesn't make sense hehe

  • @bodinian only in the US you use farenheit no? never been in another country that does...

  • Only for mesuring weather. In science we use Celsius

  • I LOVE UNBUNTU

  • @RecklessDrift fail

  • @bodinian If it's a scientist period, your usually pretty safe assuming it's C.

  • In Science, it's actually convention to talk in Celsius/Kelvin. Yes, I agree that she should specify, but you can always assume that it's not Fahr.

  • Debbie is a spunk. Love the dimples!!

  • I like Debbie.

  • if only i had such good examples when i was a highschool student ! back then it was all chalk on the board, things to memorize, not to understand.

20 years later i now understand chemistry

better than i used to when they made me study it,

and it's all thanks to people like you.

i think your videos should be used in every

    school.

you make things more approachable and

    more relevant.

    (organic chemistry i understand better

thanks to cooking. and thanks to Alton Brown...)

  • @catman72 Love Good Eats!!!

  • Aww man I love Alton! He explains things so much better than anybody else!

  • @catman72

I can totally agree with what you say

  • Love it!

  • I stayed up an hour past my bedtime to watch this video.

  • i love your videos, i learn so much, keep them coming

  • A dissertation on Boron? sound enthralling.
