This is one outstanding piece. It SOOOO fit the scene it was used for in the movie. Very much like a Copland work. It evoked the simple pleasures of life in rural America. Working in union with the land, depending on God for goodness to come from land, air and water to sustain a simple lifestyle and rich faith in Him. This is the essence of the Amish heritage. They are to be greatly admired. Thank you Murice, for such a BEAUTIFUL work. You are greatly missed. Peace to you...forever.
This Composition was used as the theme song to a video Tribute to Pelle Lindbergh, after his tragic death in November, 1985. I remember being a young boy, a huge hockey fan, watching a Flyers game soon after the accident. I beleive it was on the cable channel Prism, and it gave Pelle's video tribute a majestic presence I have never forgotten. For me, it is an incredible piece of music with deep meaning. Thanks for the gift!
The summer of 1984 I spent 4 days in the Amish country with my wife and 2 daughters, it was our first overnight vacation with our children. The movie I believed came out in 1985 and this song has always brought back those wonderful memories when they were small.
I love this score: i don't know whether it is just the music or that wonderful scene where the whole community came out to build the barn for the newlyweds. The modern world can learn a lot about selflessness from the Amish.
It's a terrific score though this: electrically produced I think but the counterpoint and harmonies: everything is touching: it does bring tears to your eyes.
...so beautiful. it breaks your heart. the way it celebrates all the things that matter in this wondrous journey called life is just to much sometimes.
This piece blows me away every time I hear it. It's hard to believe that the film "Witness" is already 25 years old. OK, it was only a film, but that footage of the Amish men building the barn, coupled with this music, has got to be one of the greatest moments in all of filmdom.
Every time I hear this piece I am completely blown away. I can't believe that the film is already over 25 years old--seems like just the other day I was watching it for the first time.
Maurice Jarre- a genius- created scores for Lawrence of Arabia, Dr. Zhivago and this great film Witness. All three film scores are now part of musical history. His scores reach down deep into our souls. In my opinion Harrison Ford's finest film.
All eyes of justice are upon one. The time will come when one will say "I did no wrong!", but love shall be taken away and the council of what is right and merciful will hold sway. And years will pass, the witness with all its myriads of mirrors will reflect in the light of truth. And finally proclaim, 'I saw! I see! I am witness to the past and always to the future' And finally it was opened and an accounting took place. And the witness reigned in love to all children who plead for Abba.

I cannot possibly express what this music means to me, how does one get the heart to actually speak, its not going to be easy. I feel touched to my very being to my soul. It conjures up all that good mankind should be, instead of all the woe we have in this sad world. The mounting melody makes my hair stand up, i cant say whats in my mind at hearing this! Words wont do it! I've been an avid follower of Jarre's music for many years how does he do it? Every time I hear this i just cry with joy!
My parents had an old barn on their property, which my Dad spent many hours working on. When he died, this seemed a perfect piece to play at his funeral, and now I always associate the music with him.
I was very touched when the Amish were quick to forgive those who had killed their children in that school massacre. Most of them are the real deal who live by what they believe. And they cook good too. Go to an amish restaurant if you get the chance.
I'm from Southern Indiana and lived around a lot of amish. They are hard working no nonsense people who are worthy of respect. The scene in the movie where this song plays makes me think a lot about community.

Un grand merci pour cette superbe musique qui m'a toujours transportée ! Et... Michael Godunov : que de beaux souvenirs enchanteurs ! Bel hommage pour "ce très grand artiste " !
This Composition could have Many Metaphorical meanings to it...for many Ppl...'specially..the movie Witness....the Name "John Book"...by the book, from his heart, righteous but misunderstood..like the Amish...Viggo Mortenson(sp) first Role and the scene in which the this "beautiful gift" is from...Building the Barn, starting over evolution i could go on and on...but i do love it..and it is a ringtone...
I could not agree with you more TwoFourFixate, this piece is simply inspirational and really can be summed up in one word joie de vivre. An ethereal melody first conceived in the mind of God, swiflty delivered to mankind.
This sounds really touching but I more of a fan of his soundtracks for Enemy Mine and The Mosquito Coast. The Mosquito Theme Track 1 is what really touches my heart!!
One thing I had forgotten to mention is that, sometimes when I start to listen to this piece, I actually have to turn it off.
This work is sooo damn powerful . . . sooo utterly moving . . . it touches the core of who I am and the feeling to be alive . . . that, if I'm not in the right place to accept this and to be moved, it is just too overwhelming.
To me, that is the gift of a great artist . . . sometimes it can almost be too much.
I don't know if this makes any sense . . . so be it
@TwoFourFixate You are not alone. Tchaikovskys 1812 Overture always makes me want to give a fierce battle cry in order to vent my emotions but I have to hold it back, so it turns into tears.
@TwoFourFixate I know exactly what you mean. its a good thing and demonstrates you have a good emotional response and have a good heart. I too find some music emotionally draining. This piece blew me away when I first heard it played against the barn raising scene in Witness. A beautifully crafted piece of music
how does a composer create something that is so abstract in one sense yet concrete as in the reality of the feelings we have in building something....

life has meaning after all, thats what this music does to our despondency... especially in the dreaded way of life humans now present...
This music—from the barn-raising scene in the film "Witness"—is one of the most-stirring and most-goosebump-inducing works of art that I have ever had the great pleasure to experience. I am always moved—often to tears—when I listen to this beautiful piece.
I want to blast this music from giant speakers in the sky—so that the entire planet, galaxy, and universe can hear.
Maurice Jarre has given us a gift that will last forever.
The movie "Witness" is my all-time favorite. I think that's because it presents a way of life I yearned for. The raising the barn scene with its beautiful and stirring music is my all-time favorite scene because it reminded me of helping build a church when I was about 4 years old.
Uma das mais belas músicas que já ouvi! Inesquecível Maurice Jarre, só Deus mesmo para dar tanta sensibilidade e sabedoria para um homem criar esta obra prima! Descanse em paz !
Once in a while, a piece of music comes along that can touch your very soul. This is one of them. Thank you Maurice. We miss you.
