@vandboeffel Lol! Aww man that's fucked up! But hilarious! I can see your point and check this little similarity out : Max Schreck-Michael Stipe ( same initials ) plus they're playing in Germany, ol' Max was German. Weird little set of coincedences!
Most of the people in this crowd are American. Wiesbaden is home to our largest Army community in Germany, and is right up the road from our largest Air Force base in Germany. Having lived in Germany for many years, I can tell you that American military members and their families attend a lot of these concerts. Add'ly, Snipe was an Army brat in Germany growing up.
was a truly AMAZING night! Michael Stipe was in best form, and the rappor between him and the audience was incredible! Am so thankful I was there to experience this particular night!!
I remember the 03 tour in Warsaw. It was so amazing. When they played "drive" I asked Stipe to sweem around the audience like in the video but he refused. I was so delighted that he got into reacion with me that I could die that day.
I would love to know the history?life of the lady at minute 2.51 giving the finger, with the wrist band. I live in New Zealand and poss no risk. Its a life challange to know your life, enjoy
What is so intriguing about Michael Stipe in this video is his piercing looks to the audience...almost as if he is looking personally at each person...truly exquisite!
As an American I think REM is a national treasure . I also think that European audiences at rock concerts are vastly superior to American audiences .
At American shows its really only the first twenty rows or so who are clapping and getting into it ... at European shows the guy in the last row is clapping , hands in the air just like the guy in the first row . Maybe the Europeans are actually there for the music and the Americans are just there to see and be seen ... i dont know
@sweetfly66 I am also American and totally agree with you. R.E.M. is extremely under appreciated because they refuse to conform to the mainstream. R.E.M.'s music contains a depth that is lacking in the pop music today. This audience appreciates that depth and can feel the music. Most Americans do not understand this concept, which is why pop music is what it is
@BromineZinc ... I am not sure about all that . I do know that REM is one of those bands that people either LOVE to death or they HATE with a passion . There is no in between with REM . You never hear someone say , eh ... REM is ok ...or , Yeah , I kind of like REM ... its either love or hate .
@sweetfly66 Dude I'm American as well and have lived in Europe for a good few years and I must say you have hit the nail on the head with your observation.
@sweetfly66 "As an American I think REM is a national treasure . I also think that European audiences at rock concerts are vastly superior to American audiences"
@sweetfly66 Totally spot on ...excellent observation..I'm American to and obviously couldn't agree more...moreover since I have attended concerts by the same band at both American and European venues.
@sweetfly66: German crowds are really like that ! Music loving Germans "hate" neighbors who are not willing to accept they´re playing their music with doors opened to the garden in the summer - mostly such "neighbors" even have sleeping problems in other ways + should consult good doctors instead of getting on the nerves of their neighbors who love life+are no sleeping pills.
If you watch these REM concerts in Germany you can bet that half of them are gay or lesbian + the rest is bisexual...LOL
@sweetfly66 If you're saying that America produces the best bands but has mediocre audiences, and the Euros have the best audiences but produce mediocre bands, then, well, I'm okay with that arrangement.
@TheRiversDark ... i dont know man ... I think the beatles , stones , and zeppelin are the gold standard for pop , rock , and hard rock ...all British ...but you cannot discount bands like REM , Nirvana , Tom Petty , and Springsteen either ... its a tough call
@BrianGodard True. Though it does play Permanent Vacation which actually was never recorded (you can now get it on iTunes), Peter DID write the line-up with the album "In Time:The best or R.E.M. 1988-2003" in mind. If you want to listen to music by them that is lesser known listen to the album REM Live at the Olympia. And the DVD REM LIVE! does have many popular songs by them, it also has alot of songs people do not listen to as much.
yeah...well music has been good for a long time...80s was pretty damned good too...just not the cheese retro 80s..but the real 80s...which is when r.e.m. started...and only two of the bands you listed were good...live, collective soul and barenaked ladies were bollocks.
R.E.M. das waren noch richtige göttermusiker wo das GANZE album hörbar :-) war!!!

This gesture is not considered "giving the finger" in Germany. Of course I don't know whether she was from Germany...
