I have the 7 inch version on a Best of the '80s compilation, but this is even better! I love the spanish guitar in the intro and in the middle of the song and the pseudo-breakdown of the "wall of sound" in the second part. This is one of the many tributes to Phil Spector's sound, including the infamous "Be My Baby" drumbeat and the little castanet sound at the beginning of each bar, that's very 1963-ish, even though the song came out in '83-'84.
Actually, I used to be the lead guitarist in a surf/beat band here in Italy until 3 years ago, and I spent hours and hours listening to (among tons of other stuff) the works of Brian Wilson and Phil Spector. Now, with my current band, I play funk, a totally different style, although I still slip "Misirlou" into the setlist just to shake up the audience a bit more. As for being a "muso journo"...if I won't get any luck with just being a "muso", I wouldn't mind giving it a try! Cheers mate!!!
I love this - I have the 12" up in my loft - it was called the Marbella mix if I remember rightly - Thanks for posting - this brings back 80's memories - I'll have to go in the loft & dig it out!!!

should have been a "hit" for skeeter davis in the summer of '66..!
yedon68 2 years ago
Yes, Skeeter Davis was the first to record it. Davis recorded this on 1965, and then Natercia Barreto recorded a cover in 1968

This music is a cover from a portuguese one called Óculos de Sol, or is the other way around?
RUIuiuiuiui 2 years ago
Sunglasses was written in the 1960s by Jon D. Loudermilk, an American, I think.

celestino, what a superb appreciation! totally agree. You should be a muso journo, if not alreday.
but the 7 inch not without its merits, so have posted one!

I always loved this song, but the Portuguese version (the first version I heard) by Natercia Barreto will always have a special place in my heart.
