Torchwood is simply one of the best scifi shows. Its earned a right not to be considered "just another spin off". CoE was simply amazing and Miracle Day, although slightly americanised is quite good too.
@MobileChikane That's because Tourchwood are targeted at an older audience, the writers therefore have the means to make the series a lot darker compared to Doctor who, which is a family show.
I absolutely adore Children of Earth. It's what got me into Torchwood in the first place. Brilliant storyline. It shows how much we worry about our own. Thumbs up if you can't wait until Miracle Day.
Considdering it aired in 2009 and I've watched it a number of times, it still sends shivers down my spine. The trailer here is absolutely brilliant. Appealing to the desire to protect children at all costs and to be there for them. Astounding drama and astounding trailer, keep up the good work BBC!
It's amazing how a show that began as mostly mindless garbage turned into a mature, intelligent program. Children of Earth is one of RTD's biggest triumphs.
Whole 5 part series on DVD costs less than that 40 minute Doctor Who cartoon, only thing that annoyed me was that cow who first suggested that some children are more expendable than others ended up in charge of government - I hope she gets a laser to her fat head in the series.
@jnyeko By all means compare a 2 and a half hour movie dealing with a terrorist's mission to destroy social order to an alien invasion miniseries that is 5 hours long. Oh and are superhero and science fiction respectively.
@jnyeko Agreed. I know it is wrong to say but Children Of Earth will be hard to out do. Let us hope that RTD can recreate that same magic with Torchwood: Miracle Day. Guess i have to order Starz now
@johnsanchez4 I just found out the other day that live feed to Starz is included in the NetFlix package. I don't know how much it cost to add STARZ to cable, but I know NetFlix is $10 a month and that includes access to a lot of movies online and one movie at a time through the mail (that's how I'm catching up on Dr Who).
Possibly one of the best series ever made! Torchwood really out-did itself with Children of Earth, it made me smile, it made me sick to my stomache with fear and grief, it made me bawl my eyes out, it showed me exactly what great television story is all about! Simply brilliant!
I agree that TV should have as much art in it as possible.
What I disagree about - is the necessity of art going hand-to-hand with disturbing visions of apocalyptic evil in general.
Honestly - I'd rather call the "Firefly" series art, rather than CoE, based on this trailer (which is to say that I like and appreciate "Firefly" a lot).
@rettie Judging by your comment I'm assuming you haven't seen the series itself, it's not the idea of apocalyptic evil that leads me to call CoE art, it's the ability to literally play with your emotions. It doesn't just do this by fear, although that is one of the primary goals.
I haven't seen Firefly tbh, so I wont pass judgement, although I have heard a lot of positive things about it.
Does it play with emotions any less? Is it less artistic because of absence of motive that can be legitimately described as cataclysmic.
What I am criticizing - is using art as a vessel to deliver fear into hearts of people in general.
I am praising Firefly on the account of it being very, very realistic and convincing, "human" - but in the same time allowing for strong characters, cheerful themes, happy endings and epic tales WITHOUT the cheesiness or a superficial approach to subjects.
As a small off-topic - you are refreshingly not-biased and non-insulting in this, which makes it a discussion, instead of another flame war. It's very refreshing not to be insulted and labeled, and exchanging opinions, for a change.
Hat's off, Wiggum.
Many people mistake arrogance for being civilized and strength of conviction for education. So many, in fact, that I've gotten used to expecting senseless anger from speaking honestly and freely about things.
Season 3 (Children of Earth) was the point at which Torchwood truly came into its own, although season two was taking steps in the right direction. COE proved that Russel T. Davies was capable of elevating the show from its origins as a (frankly childish) adult Who spin-off with gratuitous sex, nudity and obsenities (which existed for no other reason than to provide cheap titillation and often even cheaper laughs) into a mature, powerful SF series in its own right.
When I got the dvd I locked myself away and had a marathon watching ALL of Children of Earth in just over five hours, credits and all. That is the closest u will ever get to recreating the epicness of the first time u saw this serial
This is like the old Dr Who serieals that last 5 or six episodes. This series was easily the best even though it hasn't got the typical Torchwood storyline of something coming out of the Rift
I was truly rivetted andthought it gave a great comment about government, I'll always remeber the Cabinet scene when they are deciding what to do. God I love to hate the PM in CoE. The sad thing is the government probably would do something like that, and I don't mean "this labour government, that conservative government" I mean any British government
I started to wonder if it'll be more like how they portray it on Dr.Who. Every time the Dr. meets with Torchwood people, it seems like the Dr. has to save the Earth. It'll be all new faces I am sure, hopefully they'll keep Gwen Cooper. It is just too bad the whole cast had to die within the 3 seasons. And hopefully we'll find out how Captain Jack Harkness fairs at the end.
Huh? RTD said he could write the first scene for the net season off teh top of his head, and he'd know ehere you find all the characters. Also, Torchwood season 4 has just be confirmed!
No series 4 is coming out and there will b an American version which shall either b a remake or a spin off. I'm personally hoping for a spin off cos it would really expand the Dr Who universe
I'd say yes, but knowing the previous two series would be advantagous. In some respects it's like tuning into a soap. You may not know the characters but after two minutes you get a good idea of what's going on. Besides you could always say the disc was scratched and get your money back...
yeah its def worth buying. Its very standalone. It obviously draws on there relationship so far. But all you need to know is they fight against aliens, but they are currently down two members of the team due to the series 2 finale which is where children of earth picks up
You cannot end Torchwood after this. This was a hit. If you make a new series/season it will be a big hit. After this huge fantastic series you cannot end it.
Sometimes all you can do it take the least bad option. If he could have died, I'm sure Jack would not wanted to survive, but he's been damned to live forever.
And it isn't just Gwen and Rhes- Martha has an open invite, and there are others.
I told my friend to watch it, and even though she's not really a big sci-fi fan, she loves it. Now we're having all these discussions about ethics and the human race, it's brilliant!
rip ianto rip owen rip tosh HAPPY NOW CAPTAIN JACK?? BECOUSE OF YOU THEY ARE DEAD.NOW WHOS GONNA RUN TORCHWOOD EH?? GWEN AND HER DUMB HUSBAND?? there goes the planet
same here. I loved it too. It was like the best sci fi i've seen. they pulled off everything. and it was done so good. It reallly touched you in some points though..some parts were really sad and emotional. 5/5
This was so depressing (and I couldn't find the last 4 episodes of series(?) 2, so I was shocked when I found out that Owen and Tosh died). D:

This is a too good of an illustration of fear-worshiping.
Why would anyone in this world wanted to love being scared?
I don't see any reason why anyone would love things like this, other than having an obsession with fear/evil/disharmony.
Why torture oneself with such emotions? Life has hardships on it's own. Enough to demean seeking hardships within screens.
rettie 1 year ago
@rettie Because TV/film is supposed to be an art form, and you know a piece of art is truly powerful when it messes with your emotions.
Wiggum1223 1 year ago
@Wiggum1223
Nope.
That's an option, not a prerequisite.
Insisting that it is is intolerant, stubborn, obnoxious, towards alternatives, and most definitely - close-minded.
Art can also set those emotions straight, an enrich, ennoble the audience. Messing up doesn't guarantee that it's art, either.
rettie 1 year ago
@rettie What I mean is TV should be an art form, it very rarely achieves that status.

I openly said that I haven't - didn't I? That's what I've said - "based on this trailer".
Idea of apocalyptic evil may not have lead you to CoE - but it's motives, as presented here, are legitimately connectible to those motives.
Playing with emotions can be very noble, enriching and catharsic.
Take "Live and become", the French film.
rettie 1 year ago
Does it play with emotions any less? Is it less artistic because of absence of motive that can be legitimately described as cataclysmic.

Download early torchwood - it's a bit hit and miss - but this ending is pretty stunning!

Word for the BBC:
You cannot end Torchwood after this. This was a hit. If you make a new series/season it will be a big hit. After this huge fantastic series you cannot end it.

Sometimes all you can do it take the least bad option. If he could have died, I'm sure Jack would not wanted to survive, but he's been damned to live forever.
And it isn't just Gwen and Rhes- Martha has an open invite, and there are others.

I told my friend to watch it, and even though she's not really a big sci-fi fan, she loves it. Now we're having all these discussions about ethics and the human race, it's brilliant!
