Great clip - Most everyone has seen the initial Cronkite bulletin but I never knew the follow-up bulletins were already giving a strong indication he was dead.
Saw a clip recently of JFK attending the breakfast at Fort Worth hotel the morning he was assassinated. A High School choir sang "Eyes of Texas" to him ('The Eyes of Texas are upon you - you can not get away") and in the last speech of his life, JFK mentioned in passing that we lived in a dangerous world - the irony was murderous/
Two reporters from WFAA were in Dealey Plaza, witnessed the shooting, and immediately went to their studios. They were on the air within ten minutes. The both stated they heard three shots.
They were waiting for the live camera to warm up. Back then it took many minutes for that to happen, which is why they did not show Cronkite live at first. It is not true that JFK was ever taken in an ambulance, of course.
call me a conspiracy theory nut but I think it's somewhat curious that in the early sixties, when they would go back and forth from a SOAP OPERA, that Cronkite would report THREE SHOTS. THREE SHOTS - twice in the first two interruptions. There is NO WAY, given the time, that they could get that fact straight merely hours after the incident.
@raratunga Hours, try MINUTES after the incident. As for "three shots", that came from the UPI wire service. UPI's Merriman Smith broke the story to the world four minutes after the shots were fired. Smith's bulletin, phoned in to UPI from the press pool's car telephone, said "Three shots were fired at President Kennedy's motorcade in downtown Dallas."
@raratunga Yes, glad you caught that. It does seem very strange that they already have much of the events figured out even before the authorities have gone on record with those facts.
@huskyjerk Yeah, you´re right... they give details that in the future never changed, and were part of the Warren Commission report, they stuck to that story!!!
Watching the actual program and then being completely unaware the bullitin was going to happen makes the asassination news so much more real. Scary, too.
I was four years old at the time. I remember most of what happened after the news broke, I just don't remember when we heard it. We were eating lunch in the kitchen and the TV was on ATWT in the next room, so my parents heard this as it was being announced.
this is really great that you posted this. But I still can't get over the fact that they went back to " As the World Turns" after it was announced Kennedy was shot. Even crazier to me, the commercials were still going.
Excellent collection of videos my friend. I am an avid history buff and these are truely excellent. I also have had a huge interest in J.F.K. and everything to do with him and the assassination since i was a kid. Great work here sir, I tip my hat to you.

Walter Cronkite invented "Breaking News" right there with a bit of ingenuity and improvisation. CNN and Sky News should credit him there. It would change news reporting forever. Only 9/11 would break the news much faster than that.
@tomitstube - Kennedy was shot at 12:30 PM CST (1:30 PM EST). This broadcast of "As The World Turns" started at 12:30 PM CST (1:30 PM EST). The first CBS bulletin was broadcast ten minutes into the program at 12:40 PM CST (1:40 PM EST). So, it took them ten minutes after the shooting to announce the news on CBS.
@MiscVideos78rpm ~ thank you. so when the show started, those famous scenes in dallas were taking place in real time.
the only thing i remember (i was 6, the same age as caroline) was the next day, saturday, my parents were glued to the t.v., i asked them why the cartoons weren't on. they were just staring at the television and not saying a word. i knew it was something very grave by their demeanor. i watched for while and got a general grasp of what had happened. thanks for the post.
NuSoft is no longer manufactured by Corn Products' Best Foods division, 'Cromag' [Malco Products markets it these days]- but it's still available on most grocers' shelves.
This is the master "network feed", 'azzabop'- if this had been taped from WCBS-TV in New York, you would have seen what Channel 2 scheduled between 2:30 and 2:50 during the "local station identification" break {the "master feed" featured nothing but a dark screen for the affilates to fill}.
Placing the CBS announcement at the start of the second installment instead of letting people experience the announcement interrupting ATWT destroys the feeling of reliving history. I'm glad to see others have corrected this goof.
@GermanShepherd1983 - I'm sorry if that bothers you. At the time I uploaded this, I could only upload the video in ten-minute segments, and the first "As The World Turns" segment was ten minutes long.
As a result of the assasination, all three networks installed special mini-studios, which would allow anchros or correspondents to be seen as well as heard when news bulletins broke into regular programming.
It was not until about 2 P.M. EST (give or take a couple of minutes) that the tube-type TV cameras warmed up enough for news anchors to be seen as well as heard.
Today, with a "flash studio", we would have seen Cronkite right away after the first bulletin slide or intro.
thanks for the history of this coverage. I still believe there is a second gunman. It's obvious. But that is just my belief. Some people say they heard six.
Thank you for posting this, miscvideos78rpm. Videos like this are a million times more important than all of the Bieber, Gaga, Perry and Ke$ha videos combined. It's sad that those videos are the ones that get millions of views. Thanks again. This time, YOU get a well-deserved shoutout! : D
The people who were watching this at home had to have been really creeped out when the show was suddenly interrupted by a news bulletin.
I mean, I don't know just how the business ethics were back then but I know that nowadays it would take something incredibly huge (like a presidential assassination) for a network to interrupt their sponsors. Usually, they would wait for the show to come back on for a minute or two (so they don't appear to had been waiting) and then come in.
Woah! They just said the president was shot and they went to a commercial!? That's crazy! Then they go back to As the World Turns!? I was only born in 1978, but if I heard this news back in 1963, I know coffee or Dr. Bob would be the last thing on my mind!
I'm still waiting for the lousy liberals to apologize for Oswald a Marxist liberal left wing swine for killing our beloved president! Oswald loved Castro and the Russian Godless Communists!
To my generation, this was basically like what Pearl Harbor meant to our parents. It was the worst tragedy we had faced in my lifetime and in my judgment, the country was never the same again. Kind of like 9/11 .... never the same again. Life forever changed.
I was 12 at the time and when this happened, it changed everything. We didn't know but that the Russians had done this and we were going to war (the Cuban Missile Crisis was only thirteen months before). Politics changed. Johnson came in , with less class and much less finesse and pretty soon we were waist deep into the Vietnam War, JFK would have probably managed things much better, but he was dead.
I can picture housewives/kids home from school at this moment in time. Cronkite's voice presents the shocking news to the image of an emotionless Bulletin Card. Crashing from the warm fantasy of a soap to cold hard reality in a single blow with no warning. Then goes carries on with the normality of a Nescafe commercial. I bet people were wondering whether they had imagined what they had just seen and heard. Surely it was a mistake. They were in a void for few minutes till Cronkite reaffirmed.
I feel bad that all those "Friskies" dogs are now dead. This just in. All the "Friskies" dogs have died of natural causes. Please stand by for more details as they become available.
This was an incredable weekend. I cut school that Friday and was crusing the radio stations when it was announced that there was a shooting in Dallas. I watched television that whole weekend and into the next week. Un forgettable.
@halo3bomm I don't think "stuipd" is even a word. And if you meant stupid, how is this event stupid? It shook people up and made them think. It changed the Secret Service's security measures. They stopped all television and radio programming for days because of this. I have no idea how you could say this is stupid. Learn some history and proper spelling.
It's very likely that Oswald was not the assassin of JFK because (according to Jim Garrison's book) there was a Texas live oak tree near the 6th floor window of the book depository where the shots supposedly came from. Unlike normal trees, those trees bloom in autumn and shed their leaves in spring. So Oswald would have had to have shot him at a distance through heavy foliage with a gun that had a defective scope, and Oswald was reportedly a lousy shot as well.
@wookie72 It was 1963, and TV was still in its infancy! They only had audio in the news report at first because they had to warm up the studio camera first! Info was sketchy at best and the station didn't want just dead air! People would go to the other few remaining channel!
@wookie72 Although I was in 3rd grade at the time, I remember it well. and let me assure you there were allot of shocking things that took place! Especially when Oswald was shot by Jack Ruby live on TV. Once the TV networks go going, It was day and night coverage for over 2 weeks. And thats it, no other TV programming was on.
@wookie72 - Besides what le238man told you, they didn't have a whole lot of information right at first on exactly what happened. So they'd go to commercial while they got more. Reporters would come in or phone in. The guy who broke in on the fashion show who says he's out of breath is Jay Watson, WFAA, he ran all the way there from Dealey Plaza. I've worked in broadcasting and he's one of my heroes.
I was home "sick" with the flu from 6th grade. I was watching KNXT (Channel 2). My favorite (kid-home/sick). show was Password which was on at 10:00 am. I do not remember what happened next. But being 12 and Home-alone, I got very scared hearing the News. Then four days later (feeling better) my Grandfather and I were in an old-cool soda shop (after church). And...Then! We both see Oswald SHOT on live TV! It was truly an incredible time to grow up in and VERY SAD!
@MiscVideos78rpm Thanks for the Props. It is amazing how some terrible memories remain so clear after almost 40 years! You would have t live through this to truly understand the way Walter Cronkite reported that awful news!
@MiscVideos78rpm The Kid World is so different then now. I mean that like all kids we were all looking forward too the ultimate holiday(s)...Thanksgiving & Christmas! I mean Kid TV was #1 and "all" that was On was The Lying in State, Funeral Procession, and then Burial! All of the Seven (7) L.A. Stations showed parts. KHJ (Channel 9) did break it up with Movies as did KCOP (13) and KTTV (11). Remember...we had to TURN the TV Dial! When you are sick and 12 TV is your World then
@starbucks107 - And radio. And it was all you could get on the radio, too, along with some quiet classical music on some stations. Yep, I remember turning the TV dial, and radios had a dial too and you could finesse it to pull in hard-to-get stations.
Thanks for the glimpse of history and (on a lesser note) some things that never happened. Namely, the advertisement at 2:18. Today, we know that the episode of Route 66 scheduled for that night never aired. I wonder if it ever did.
@insdmia I wondered about that Route 66 episode too. If you go on IMDB and look at the episode guide, you'll see 11/22/63 is missing. The episode that I believe should have aired was called "A Cage in Search of a Bird" the description of the episode does match the promo "a mountain adventure with a pretty girl". It aired the following week on 11/29/63.
@mytvmemories - Actually, episode scheduled for 11/22/63 was called "Kiss the Monster, Make Him Sleep", and it wound up airing on 1/24/64.
What's really interesting (and a little eerie) is that the episode that was originally supposed to air the following week - "I'm Here to Kill a King" - involved a would-be political assassination. For obvious reasons, CBS decided to yank that one from the schedule (replacing it with "A Cage in Search of a Bird"); and it stayed MIA until syndication.
@insdmia-I'm thinking, since this episode never aired that night, they probably aired this episode during re-runs. I remember reading the tv guide growing up, they would give a brief description of each and every episode, and then at the end, they would say something like, postponed from an earlier date. Hope this helps!!! Cheers!!!
@insdmia Most likely, it was aired the following week. If you look at a lot of the shows that aired in 1963, you'll notice that the Weekend of November 22-24, 1963 was devoid of most programming, as the Coverage of the Kennedy assassination pre-empted that coverage. Other significant news events have also preempted TV Shows, I'm sure we all remember 9/11/2001. :(
Just to think that the country was getting ready for Thanksgiving which was the next Thursday.I would love to have this whole thing intact so I could show my history class.
Folks wouldn't be getting their kicks on Route 66 tonight. What kind os dogs are those in the Friskies commercial Cocker Spaniels? That's a Bassett Hound at the Gravy Train like dog food.
Who can think about coffee at a time like this!

I bet people were wondering whether they had imagined what they had just seen and heard. Surely it was a mistake. They were in a void for few minutes till Cronkite reaffirmed.

No offense, but why did you put the break where you did? It's a little awkward.
My God, though, it's shocking that they went to a commercial right after!
wookie72 1 year ago
@wookie72 It was 1963, and TV was still in its infancy! They only had audio in the news report at first because they had to warm up the studio camera first! Info was sketchy at best and the station didn't want just dead air! People would go to the other few remaining channel!
le238man 1 year ago
@le238man It still is kind of shocking.
wookie72 1 year ago
@wookie72 Although I was in 3rd grade at the time, I remember it well. and let me assure you there were allot of shocking things that took place! Especially when Oswald was shot by Jack Ruby live on TV. Once the TV networks go going, It was day and night coverage for over 2 weeks. And thats it, no other TV programming was on.
le238man 1 year ago

When you are sick and 12 TV is your World then
starbucks107 1 year ago
@starbucks107 - And radio. And it was all you could get on the radio, too, along with some quiet classical music on some stations. Yep, I remember turning the TV dial, and radios had a dial too and you could finesse it to pull in hard-to-get stations.

Thanks for the glimpse of history and (on a lesser note) some things that never happened. Namely, the advertisement at 2:18. Today, we know that the episode of Route 66 scheduled for that night never aired. I wonder if it ever did.
insdmia 1 year ago
@insdmia You're welcome!
MiscVideos78rpm 1 year ago
@insdmia I wondered about that Route 66 episode too. If you go on IMDB and look at the episode guide, you'll see 11/22/63 is missing. The episode that I believe should have aired was called "A Cage in Search of a Bird" the description of the episode does match the promo "a mountain adventure with a pretty girl". It aired the following week on 11/29/63.
mytvmemories 1 year ago
@mytvmemories - Actually, episode scheduled for 11/22/63 was called "Kiss the Monster, Make Him Sleep", and it wound up airing on 1/24/64.
What's really interesting (and a little eerie) is that the episode that was originally supposed to air the following week - "I'm Here to Kill a King" - involved a would-be political assassination. For obvious reasons, CBS decided to yank that one from the schedule (replacing it with "A Cage in Search of a Bird"); and it stayed MIA until syndication.
mdumas43073 1 year ago
@insdmia CBS rescheduled this episode for another date a few weeks later.
soulierinvestments 1 year ago
@insdmia-I'm thinking, since this episode never aired that night, they probably aired this episode during re-runs. I remember reading the tv guide growing up, they would give a brief description of each and every episode, and then at the end, they would say something like, postponed from an earlier date. Hope this helps!!! Cheers!!!
1mrmoose 1 year ago
@insdmia Most likely, it was aired the following week. If you look at a lot of the shows that aired in 1963, you'll notice that the Weekend of November 22-24, 1963 was devoid of most programming, as the Coverage of the Kennedy assassination pre-empted that coverage. Other significant news events have also preempted TV Shows, I'm sure we all remember 9/11/2001. :(
