From what i've read this is what happened:

Barrymore & his drunk friends took lots of cocaine .

It all got out of hand and one of the friends ended up with his arse filled with cocaine and then followed by various objects; not only but including an ashtray which is meant to have killed him.

The body was left floating in the pool while Barrymore crashed out and woke with no memory due to the alcohol and drugs.
