  • The performance seems flat, specifically in those segments where a conductor who understood the work could have brought it to life. The soprano gave an excellent technical performance. The strings were on cue. Technical competence is no substitute for a piece done with feeling.

  • @MEWUERTZ What? Are you deaf? Flat? I have heard people be wrong before, but never have I heard anyone who was PERFECTLY wrong. You have achieved perfection.

  • Lovely, sweet voice, perfect for this work. Just the right combination of richness with a light touch. This isn't grand opera, after all. Notice the light shining upon her, as if she were one of heaven's angels. She even looks like an angel. At least, she sings like one, and one can tell she believes what she is singing about.

  • im scared.... i have to sing this!?

  • It's very good. A pity we have to wait for stupid advertisements, personally I would have nothing to do with an advertiser who spoils my enjoyment with an irrelevant advert. I don't mind something like "Buy this on DVD..."

  • @jamianpal Or "subscribe to the Kings College Development Fund"

  • Well...I certainly am a new fan!!! Awesome!

  • The magnificent concert is available in its entirety in 720p @ /watch?v=cUfc1-cUgE0.

  • I have been listening to this the whole day and each time it sounds fresh and new. what a voice, what a great arrangement. This is absolutely superb.

  • Seemingly effortlessly WONDERFUL!

  • I enjoy listening to anything Lynne Dawson sings. I especially enjoy hearing her singing pieces from Handel's Messiah.

  • ooooh woooow sooooo beautiful BRAVA

  • Divine.

  • An excellent rendition but the tempo seems a tad too fast.

  • This person touches me deeply in soul. Her singing is gorgeous!

  • She really lets the music shine, it's like she's only using her voice as a vehicle for the music.

  • what a lovely voice, seems to be in heaven!

  • I'm in Love...

  • Great voice, great orchestra.

  • Lynne Dawson brings out this great piece by GF Händel so well.

Others come close, but she is the best

  • Ein richtiges Vibrato einmalig ist Lynne Dawson

  • The key is a tad low.

  • @jemmabond pardon?

  • @jemmabond it's at Baroque Pitch. "A" tuned to 415

  • @elizabeth8ann Interesting. 415 is halfway between the modern A and A flat. I'm guessing that came before our "modern" scale. I wonder why it was changed such a small increment. The modern scale does work out better mathematically, the Cs being even exponents of 2, ie. middle C is 2 to the power of 8.

  • She is so wonderful!! A shaft of divine light!

  • Quite beautiful. It is one of my favourites. Lynn Dawson sings it beautifully. Superb

  • Surpassingly beautiful!

  • Oh, so lovely. Volume, vibrato, tone, intonation, beautiful.

Such a wonderful orchestra. Good tempo.

  • i havent heard a more beautiful voice than this. and the musicallity is simply astounding! very beautiful!

  • absolutely amazing !!!

  • absolutely amazing !!!

  • Absolutely beautiful. The melody is inspiring, the lyrics are powerful, the singer is lovely, the presentation is outstanding. I've lost track of how many times I've watched this. God bless you, G.F. Handel.

  • Perfect control and masterful delivery. Attention beautifully drawn to the message and not to her lovely self.

  • THANKS !!!!! IAM HAPPY BECAUSE THIS OPUS WILL BE AVAILABLE IN BLU-RAY in JANUARY 2011

  • Check her out singing the Libera Me from Verde Requiem at Princess Diana's funeral. It gave me goosebumps.

  • I love Lynne Dawson! She's beautiful!

  • CHANGE THE EMBEDDING!!!!

  • Truly sublime. Her voice was as heavenly as the music.

  • Precise and beautiful but not passionate enough for my liking. I prefer sacrificing technique for passion. She is a great musical technician but not a musician.

  • @goodguyfun, you're chatting absolute shit. It's Handel, not Puccini.

  • Thank you so much for posting this.

Sir Kenneth Clark in his great TV series "Civilisation" from the late 1960s mentioned that he could never listen to this aria without catching a tear in his eye.

Utterly faultless singing from a truly magnificent artist - placement and control is exceptional.

  • I'm probably the only Party Chief that sings Messiah arias in the forest when we are working (party in the archaic sense, not a fun party, a work party). This habit baffles my Chainman/Rodman/Targetman.

  • What a drag this cannot be embedded. Someone please change their mind! It is just so good.

  • What an incredible talent this woman - this is what angels must sound like. Tremendous. Thank you for posting.

  • Thank you. I know my Redeemer Lives, he is Jesus Christ the Messiah and Savior of the World. I declare this as a Latter-Day Saint and a Sephardic Jew. I have received a testimony from the Holy Ghost of this truth.

  • Lovely just lovely!

  • Splendida!

  • Are you serious?! I've heard this song so many times and just now I finally notice that this was from Handel...wow, I feel stupid; however, this was beautiful!

  • @TheBookofEnoc I hope that one day you will grow to appreciate the beauty of this music.

  • @TheBookofEnoc, when the years happen and the autumn calls to your door you will remember us listening to this beautiful aria

  • so beautiful

  • nice

  • Suzie, thank you, very much to take time and contact me.

I will follow your suggestion. So, I invite you to visit my wordpress blog and facebook, too. Hugs and God bless you!

  • bello

  • Just Brilliant

  • *Vivien

  • ooh so smooth, i LOVE this, no histrionics, no big nodding just perfect. she looks like Felicity Lott - does anyone think this?

  • This is so good. It seems simple, but simple is not always easy.

How easy it would be to over or under act, "I know that my Redeemer Liveth," or make maudlin, "Though worms destroy this body..."

Not to mention the music. As lovely as it is, you get NO help from the accompaniment on the melody; it's up to you to know it.

    Lovely, lovely.

  • @mezzoly Handel's recognition of the voice as an instrument in its own right. One of the reasons I love his music so much.

    Lynne Dawson's interpretation is exquisite.

  • Dear friends,

If you have the lyrics, please, send me. I love this aria and I would like to learn correctly.

Linne Dawson's performance is one of the most perfect and beautyful I ever heard.

So, I hope you send me the lirics, ok?

  • @Kaytha You can get the full score almost anywhere, and the sheet music to this is available on several of the on-line sites too.

  • I doubt it is possible to top this performance, but if it were then the performance by Elizabeth Schwartzkopf might be the equal.

  • = D

  • Awesome...Just awesome!!

  • She is so beautiful and sincere looking. amazing singing!

  • Very nicely done. Her voice is very rich and beautiful to listen to, enjoy, and appreciate. Her interpretive ability in this piece is very subtle, and slight, without a lot of ostentatious show and drama. Perhaps that it what Handel intended. She knows that her "redeemer liveth" as shown in her facial expression, but greater concentration is given on technical delivery than drama, and I think this was rather wise on her part.

  • Wow, she's the best! We did The Messiah every year in college & I go back to it & follow along on my score; especially right now while my family is experiencing a tragedy; there is no Christmas for us this year. This song holds me up.

  • Gorgeous, as expected.

  • Glorious singing. What a voice! If only the accompaniment was as passionate and alive. It may be faithful to baroque performance practice, but that just makes it Authentically Boring.

  • Beautiful.

  • Beautiful, Lynne Dawson is great...

  • Beautiful. This is the best rendition I have heard.

  • @bigal6868 I agree completely! this was my Oma's favorite song of the Messiah, so I have heard it many times, but this is by far the best version I have heard

  • Wow! Beautifully, smoothly and just the right vibrato!!!!

  • molto brava

  • Can somebody please post theat song by Mcnair ...thanks

  • The song that you are referring to is more then like to be from the Handel opera Semele - I believe it is called "There from mortal cares retiring".

    Hope this helps!

  • if meg ryan and kirsten dunst had a baby who could sing...

  • Haha, you have a point there! :-D

  • reminds me of my childhood

  • Pretty good, but a little bit fast..

  • Amazing!!!

  • This is sublime.

    Stick Jenkins in the bin.

  • absolutely beautiful.......

  • I think the late Elizabeth Schwartzkopf's version is the definitive one. The problem is and was her affection for A. Hitler or at least some of his thinking.

  • Elizabeth Schwartzkopf's version? She recorded this?! OMG, I have to find that!

  • Elizabeth Schwartzkopf's version of "I Know That My Redeemer Liveth" was release on Angel records in the late 1970's. Shouldn't be too hard to find.

  • Bravo! Bravo!

Awesome! Wondeful control! What more can one possibly say but Encore! Encore!

  • "Brava! Brava!", Lynne Dawson is a woman. She is "brava", he is "bravo". ;)

  • bravo just means "I applaude"... so it is bravo for women as well..

  • Sorry, but I disagree. "Bravo" is an Italian word.

You English speakers have strange habits.

  • Bravo means "capable" or "formidable".

It is an adjective, so it changes to agree with the gender it is describing.

  • shes hot

  • Just a question- ummm mentronome marking for this would be....?

    thankies xox

  • I have a copy of Handel's Messiah, like all the words and notes and stuff, and I believe it's 72.

  • ok.. first off - I have never heard a more beautiful rendition of this part of Messiah.

Secondly... the :20 seconds of cascading notes from 4:18 seconds are for me the most soul strirring in music. its like a casket being lowered into the ground... with the words of hope to "them that sleep"... just hauntingly beautiful

  • absolutely

  • She sings sweetly and clearly, but a 'bel canto' technique cannot be outdone. She swallows her low notes, although the entirety is reassuring in tone quality. Yet overall, she sings like port. Beautiful.

  • Just one more thing:

If you should ever run into Lynne Dawson, please ask her to mention to Kathleen Battle that I said it would be nice if she sang along with the accompanying instruments -- NOT OVER THEM! I would like to blame the conductor, But a few of my friends in Vegas claim that Kathleen behaves that way off stage as well!

    Thanks Again.

  • Oh my you are very bitter. Just relax and enjoy this sublime music.

  • This wonderful work has always been one of my favorites...but when I "see" the performance, she's wobbling to and fro, side by side, twitchy jumpy, ect. -- NOT GOOD -- This is a humble and majestic piece of work -- not a god-dam Carousel. Take it from me, I was in the business over a quarter century ago.

You have excellent taste in music! 5 stars from me.

  • woah

    nice pipes

    brava

  • Voice of an angel.

  • Exquisite. There is nothing more to say.

  • Wow. Thank you for posting. The sound is so rich and serene. I love her voice, its so comforting

  • 3 words:

    beautiful, beautiful, beautiful...

  • Exquisite.

  • mai sopra le righe....dote rara...

  • I LOVE Lynn Dawson - every note is as perfectly beautiful as is she.

    Thanks for posting.

  • What Joy!

  • Realmente é uma voz privilegiada! É um dos momentos mais prazerosos que há muito não tinha e não ouvia.Que Deus contnuue abençoando-a, para que muitos venham ouvi-la e se cheguem para mais perto de Cristo.

  • Beutiful rendition of a great piece of music.

  • Breathtakingly beautiful.

  • Absolutely!!

Saw her as Rodelinda in The Hague when she was in her twenties. Very impressive!

  • Delicious! One of my favourite sopranos of all time.

  • Absolutely beautiful. C'est magnifique. What heaven will be like.

  • What a wonderful rendition. Beautiful voice, fantastic accompliment!

  • I love Lynne's voice. She sang at Diana's funeral. Kiri sang at her wedding. Two of the most authentic sopranos ever. To me Lynne is the best soprano in England at the moment. She is a truly beautiful woman too. Whenever the Royal Family picks a soprano, they choose quality.

  • Simple, clear, and beautiful.

  • Lynne Dawson is so beautiful in this video even when she sings. Is she married and does she have children as intimated by 2468linkinpark? And who is the conductor here?

  • Stephen Cleobury. it says so in the "about this video section" next to the footage

  • Okay, I noticed that after my comment.

  • Beautiful, brings tears to the eyes.

  • J'ai cette vidéo. Chaque fois que je regarde et écoute ce passage, j'ai aussi la larme à l'oeil...C'est magnifique: sérénité totale, ferveur...fantastique.Merci à Lynne et Stephen Cleobury.

  • I love this aria, too. Always moving, and yet soothing

  • I think this aria is the best painkiller ever, Haendel always give me consolation.

  • thats my mum

  • Yea right.

  • yes really she dosnet have a middle name her faviorite food is mushroom rissotto

  • everyone knows that, so what?

  • Mr. Handel's tomb is sculpted in a likeness of his composing. The manuscript page is turned to "I Know That My Redeemer Liveth."

  • Muy bonito; es una preciosidad. Haendel era una maestro de la melodía; como dice jorgesilveira 2006, es una de las melodías más hermosas que se han escrito.

  • this is one of the most beautiful melodies ever writen. and is beautifully sang!!!

  • This is lovely. Thank you!
