The reason Tarantino uses music from other films is simple...he's a film FAN, not a film MAKER. His films are like youtube "fanvids". The way he talks about films is enough to put anybody off watching them...films speak for themselves. He's made FIVE full films in 20 years...Lenzi made nearly 40 films in 20 years. If Tarantino wasn't so in awe of himself maybe he'd have made more than 1 film every 4 years.

The thing is: Tarantino doesn't make B movies. He makes A movies. Even before he had an A budget, he made A movies. They have very well drawn characters, and unlike say Fulci (who I really dig), Tarantino can tell a story. He can tell a story VERY well.

Fulci can't. Whatever you want to say about the ballsy extreme violence, the crazy shit he put on screen (a zombie VS a shark), the guy can't tell a story. His movies limp and lag, but they're worth it for the few memorable scenes in each one.

Pulp Fiction is the best example of this.

Focusing on Jules and Vince, these two guys are scumbags. Theyre drug addicts, mobsters and murderers.

They're pretty low on the social metre. But QT makes them loveable. They happily chat about burgers and foot massages on the way to killing a roomful of men.

We like these two because they're normal. Thats the magic of QT's writing. We dig the characters.

The inspiration for a screne, movie etc has to come from somewhere and not all directors have family in organised crime.
