Unimpressive. Im not even a big Volodos fan (I think Kuleshov wipes the floor with him), but I'd rather listen to his rendition of this piece than this guy.
This is a competent performance, but I'm not sure it exactly justifies parping away on his own trumpet quite so loudly in the interview. I'm not particularly convinced this is the most accurate rendition of what Horowitz actually played (as he so boldy claims). Even if it is, there are an awful lot of pianists who capture the spirit of this transcription a good deal better, regardless of whether a few tiny details are precisely what Horowitz played. He's not as good as he clearly thinks he is.
There are several blatantly miss-transcribed notes. Misha Dacid and Arcadi Volodos are more accurate, rendering his endeavor pointless.
Not to mention the Horowitz transcriptions were already resurrected. I'm sorry, Volodos, Sultanov, Dacic, and Bennett are all beneath your notice Mr. Meyrick? I find the arrogance of this person odious.
@demosj Yeah, he's obviously a real dick. I wouldn't be inclined to be hugely critical of the performance itself were it not for his attitude, but it's really rather a let-down after he hypes himself up so much. His tone is both too weak and forced.
Check out his website by the way. There's a film of the Carmen Variations which is frankly very poor indeed- as well clips of about his technical method that make it even clearer what an absolute cockmaster the man is.
Where did this footage come from?

@monobrow638 A DVD called Piano Man.
It was made to promote Richard's project he runs.
