Like Freddie, Herbie really knows how to create drama through surprise contrasted with pattern. Those bursts of lines and then rhythmic repitions. Great improvisers understand the balance between repitition and surprise.
you're spot on man. When people just play patterns it is simply unpredictable and mechanical/robotic sounding, not musical. But then again, just playing a bunch of hip interesting, shall I say surprising stuff it's not gonna say much in the overall scheme of things. I hadn't really thought of this concept before I read your comment.
I mentioned this in a comment to part 1. Everyone u see (except 4 Joe Henderson) was part of the original recording of this song back in 1965. Cool, huh?
Herbie is so incredible. I love his way to improvise. And Ron Carter is also great, I love how he supports Herbie. Tony Williams is one of the best drummers ever. What a great video
Herbie's the premier pianist/innovator/improviser of our time. The master has done it over and over again. I was fortunate enough to see Herbie, Ron and Al Foster at the Blue Note in NYC for a whole week back in '90 and '91. They also played Maiden Voyage and they went to the cosmos and back on that one. It's a different dynamic w/Al who plays sensitively and listens more than any drummer I've seen or heard. I still have the live tapes on that whole week. It was a different vibe each night.
