If you can't take proper care of your personal administration (the most basic of skills) then you're in the wrong business. To be a success it takes self-discipline, self-motivation, commitment and courage. If you're not self-reliant and can't deliver the goods then you'll spend weeks on the flank getting thrashed. Harsh, but it's a harsh business. If your kit isn't on the ball then it's obvious to the NCOs that you're a liability not worthy of moving forward.
While this is a few years old, it still rings true today, units get rid of "characters" quite often by "promoting" them into recruit training thus ridding themselves of guys that piss off the rest of the unit for example. Still goes on today. What worked 20 years ago doesnt work today, partly down to the lack of respect taught into todays youngsters. Respect is 2 way thats quite often what goes wrong. Recruit training NCOS quite often forget that.
Is there any footage of the staff NCO's leading the recruits in PT? Or leading the remedial PT sessions?
The old adage "lead by example" goes a long way; the NCO's shyte is sorted out, the recruits shyte better be sorted out.

Your kit can be turned out well, your uniform can be clean and crisp but if your not right mentally then you won't last five minutes in a Commando unit. Simply put: he wasn't strong enough to handle the discipline and therefore of no use to the RM.
If you need a hug from the instructor then you're in the wrong game. You have to be self motivated to survive. It all changes when you get to your unit if you can deal with it. But you will be with professional soldiers, your peers, and there will be far more pressure to keep the standards up.
I have to say, as a bloke that went through basic back in the late 80's - this looks like a walk in the park discipline wise.
I know the instructors are supposed to be hard and diciplined but i think this is too much, not once have they said "cmon your doing well, keep it up" or "you can do this, its a state of mind" they not showing juch encouragement to the marines

Training looks pretty basic, i expected harder drill's etc. They seriously need to physically & mentally toughen them up, ALLOT, but still, no need to talk to people like shit. It's "progressive" & Does not happen over-night. The problem with this generation is they want everything Now, they don't understand the concept of working for it. They need to learn to put "self" aside, a rare quality. They lack "Meekness"=Power under control. In their defense, they are young & there is time to learn ;)-

Did my infantry basic in '83 and migrated to Australia in '88 after finishing in the army. There is DEFINITELY a difference in the look and attitude from when I was in to what I see in this video. @SeeYouNextFall The 32 week training is Royal Marine BASIC training. Depending on what they want to be e.g. A Sniper they will spen an extra six months or so.
@SeeYouNextFall there is a 3 day course prior to the 32 weeks training known as the Potential Royal Marines Course (PRMC), it consists of various physical assessment and tests. If you are successful on completion of the course you will be given a date on which you can start Recruit Training which is the 32 week course. The aim of the course is obviously to route out the people unsuitable for Recruit Training.

Fact is this was filmed a long time ago, they have so many people wanting to join now the application process has almost doubled in time, standards are now reverting back to old school ways as they now can just skim the top of the potential Royal Marines, iv'e also been hearing PRMC is becoming much harder to pass, i'm training hard to ensure i pass my PRMC.
Yes, I joined the Royal navy just over a year ago and they were kicking people out left and right in training over stupid small things.. they even told us there was a 6 month waiting list of people trying to get in, we also had alot of ex royal marine recruits who never made it.

cool man. my father dougie mcallister was 22nd D squadron of the SAS (1983-1998) before that he was a royal marine but was kicked out for misconduct in 1980 and went on to join the 2nd battalion of the scots guards in 1981.

I joined the territorial Para's (A company/4 para based in glasgow) at the age of seventeen and i got into a ful lblown fight with the sergeant. got kicked out and told never to come back. so i joined the marines in 2000. I was actually there during this documentary but i like forty others refused to be shown on camera. you in the military?

Did my infantry basic in '83 and migrated to Australia in '88 after finishing in the army. There is DEFINITELY a difference in the look and attitude from when I was in to what I see in this video. I wouldn't dare even *think* badly about any of my NCOs never mind question an order or show a bad attitude. the jamie bloke left not because the training was too tough, but because he was sick of being humiliated and beasted. the CO even said he was the type of guy they needed. the major problem isn't that the training is too difficult, it's that the corporals and sergants on a power trip wearing everyone down continually. the only type of person they want is someone they can grind all the personality out of.
this may have been acceptable in the 1950s but not in the 21st century.

@SeeYouNextFall there is a 3 day course prior to the 32 weeks training known as the Potential Royal Marines Course (PRMC), it consists of various physical assessment and tests. If you are successful on completion of the course you will be given a date on which you can start Recruit Training which is the 32 week course. The aim of the course is obviously to route out the people unsuitable for Recruit Training.

Fact is this was filmed a long time ago, they have so many people wanting to join now the application process has almost doubled in time, standards are now reverting back to old school ways as they now can just skim the top of the potential Royal Marines, iv'e also been hearing PRMC is becoming much harder to pass, i'm training hard to ensure i pass my PRMC.

Yes, I joined the Royal navy just over a year ago and they were kicking people out left and right in training over stupid small things.. they even told us there was a 6 month waiting list of people trying to get in, we also had alot of ex royal marine recruits who never made it.

I joined the territorial Para's (A company/4 para based in glasgow) at the age of seventeen and i got into a ful lblown fight with the sergeant. got kicked out and told never to come back. so i joined the marines in 2000.
