“When I hear new music coming into my head, its mission is integrated into its notes. It basically tells me how it wants to be.” – John McLaughlin. From Page 1 of the book “Follow Your Heart – John McLaughlin song by song.”
@spider5604 Go to abstractlogix' website and search for an interview with John McLaughlin, 03.23.2010.
Quote: "[...] Prior to this tour, I’d had words with Hadrien about his volume on stage, which was excessive.
Several months later we had a [...] free concert for the Tibetan people with whom my wife and I are associated. [...] Unfortunately the volume was way over the top, and shortly after I just had to let him go. "
Guitarist Carl Orr: "I thoroughly enjoyed reading “Follow Your Heart - John McLaughlin song by song.” The descriptions of the music are great, and I particularly enjoy those inspired moments when the author abandons literal description and describes the music in vivid, sometimes surreal imagery."
Wow, the keyboard player is really close in nailing John's tone except in the higher register. John has always been a hero of mine. I saw the first Mahavishnu tour on Boston Common for $2.50 in 1972. The opening act was Loggins and Messina! The bass is so percussive. i miss that bridge playing like Jaco used to do. Awesome!!
Etienne Mbappe is the bass player i the current line up - May 2010 - and defies description! Check out his little black gloves - never seen a bass player wear gloves! But goodness me!!!!
I've come to like him better on a big 'ol jazz box (JM, that is,) but it's nice to hear him doing his electric thing again. A multi-faceted virtuoso! What kind of bass is that- a Ken Smith? Amazing range for 4 strings.
saw these guys last year in albany ny, one of the most amazing expositions of instrumentation i've ever and probably will ever witness. hadrien and mclaughlin's styles compliment each other perfectly, i bet john wishes he was around ages ago!
No-one ssms to have mentioned that this is a great drummer playing outstanding keyboards. So talented and literally buzzing with energy. I met him after a gig and he squeezed my arm in gratitude at the feedback I gave him regarding his stuff with Allan Holdsworth which has inspired me throughout my life. As I walked home my arm was slightly numb, in a nice way, and I could really feel the energy off him. Beautiful. BTW I am a happily married man, just in case I'm giving the wrong signals here!
noted on the musicianship!!!last time i saw them play my wife turned to me at the show and said i was hurting her hand.the drummer made me hurt my wife, lol.intense as it gets, it was!!!!!!
that's about where I kind of gave up on John (same-old/same-old). But I notice an "improvement" (cheeky devil, ain't I?) of late. Stuff like this grabs my attention again. thanks for the clue; I didn't have one
i saw the concert early july in Paris Enghein , was nice but not so exiting as when Hadrien is in the band ...missing some fun in the rythm section ...
Two firsts for me: seeing JM playing what looks like a Strat, and using a whammy bar! Cool! Amazing bass playing as well; Hadrien is making a huge mark at a tender age!
It's a Godin Freeway SA guitar (humbucker, single coil, humbucker config.) with MIDI capability and an extremely thin neck! As I posted before, I've played it. And Johnji has been using the whammy bar for many years now, he's just very subtle with it, well, up till now. He's going for the Indian phrasing thing here which I love.
Thanks; I don't think he's used the whammy much, since I see him every chance I get, and have never seen him with one before. Anyway, it's a beautiful performance as usual.
The group tours again, but in Europe, next year. I hope I can catch one of those concerts. Heard them twice during their NA tour this Fall - amazing music, amazing power.
Mark Mondesir is this tiny little person, but packs as much punch as a Cobham or a Chambers.
only a thousand times rather? sir, i'd give up everything to play like that. but playing that guitar inspired me as it would you. we have to be realistic don't we?
I know what you mean! It would be cool just to shake the guy's hand. I've seen him many times, and it's exciting that he still plays so great. Holdsworth too; in his early 60s is playing as furiously as ever!
yeah, it's great. My Dad's been to his house and he's made coffee for my Dad!! how cool is that? Thing is, my uncle's recording, mixing, mastering his new album and did the same for Johnji's Gateway to Rhythm DVD hence all the priveliges!
Johnji gifted his first Godin Freeway which he used on the album and DVD to my uncle after finishing recording, which has really moved my whole family and we're really proud. I hope to meet him in May when he plays in London and maybe even go out for a meal with him if my uncle is here at the time!!
I'm green with envy; that's a great connection indeed! Can't wait to get that rhythm dvd; looks awesome, from the sample at abstractlogix. Say hi to John for me;)

anyone knows why John would not play with Had any more?
spider5604 9 months ago
@spider5604 Apparently he would not turn down the volume and at a concert for the Tibetan people it was the last straw.
