  • Karen't mom refuses to look at the facts. She only wants to place blame and be right. She needs to get slapped.

  • Karen's mother infuriates me! She is so damn bothersome. Ugh..sickening

  • Comment removed

  • I'm not blaming agnes but I've gotta say if my little girl was in as much trouble as karen, the way someone addressed me would be the least of my concerns

  • i hate Tom Burris

  • i love the piano parts

  • @VannahVonSally mee tew chillllle mi evalasting nerves!!

  • her brother is awesome :) i dnt care about the world cause my brother is always there for me <3

  • The masquerade montage moved me to tears when I first saw it, too many people live life like a dress rehearsal pretending to be happy in the moment when they are not. Realize, you only get to live once, so sort out whatever it is that is bothering you & enjoy your life while you've got it. Live WHILE you live.

  • @Faeriebiatch1210 The "Chubby" artical that is protrayed in this movie was not true... Billboard called Richard "chubby" while Karen was "sweet-voiced." for the sake of the movie that changed that... As Richard Carpenter once said of this movie "its 90 mintues long.. 5 mintues of actual truth.. and 85 minutes of BULLSHIT..I regret ever being a part of it..

  • the woman playing her is nicer looking than the real karen

  • My family always says "I love you" before we leave, even if we'll see each other in two hours. Always good to have that as the last thing you say, cause you never know...

  • My god they were so controlling. Instead of trying to control her marriage and life, they should have gotten her to a recovery center. They kept saying to her "Get help, Eat!"

But they never actually tried to help her themselves.

  • i feel so sorry for her

  • i hate her mother

  • "Masquerade" is the perfect term for the FAMILY and Karen's marriage at 30.

The final treatment was unsuccessful because BOTH parents were not on board--at least I had that. Agnes Carpenter was at the root of Karen's problems--NOT the other way around.

Denial is a river in Egypt.

  • @mredominik The river Egypt is not called Denial. The expression is Denial is not just a river in Egypt.

  • Weird family.

  • "You Can Never Be Too Rich or Too Thin."

Has anyone ever heard that "saying?" Well, if not ... true words spoken by Karen Carpenter.

    R.I.P. Beautiful-Voiced Angel

  • The mother is just SO... !!!

  • Look at me, I eat like a flea.

  • His name wasn't Bob Knight, it was Tom Burris. After Karen's death, her family had a gag clause attached to him so he couldn't discuss his marriage to Karen with anyone.

  • I read that KC never wanted to marry the guy but her bitch mom made her in order to keep up appearances. I mean this relationship was doomed from the start if by the honeymoon she's already she's in Boring Boring(Bora Bora). Even the guy had some alterior motives,I think it's unfair to totally blame him for all the problems. I mean KC was anorexic,it's not like that's the easiest thing to live with. I mean watchign someone do that to themself couldn't be easy for him.

  • does the mother play in flowers in the attic?

  • @Msosococky123 she plays the grandmother in Flowers in the attic

  • I know Karen's mom showed love to her family as best as she knew how, but to just rule out TELLING Karen that she loved her was just plain cruel. People need to be told too. That one simple loving gesture could've saved Karen, and she didn't even want to do that! When she finally did, it was too late. My family and I tell each other "I love you" every day, multiple times a day. I've never gone a day in my life without feeling loved. That's what a family should provide.

  • @SpunkyLamb - I know Karen's mom showed love to her family as best as she knew how, but to just rule out TELLING Karen that she loved her was just plain cruel. People need to be told too"

I knew a mother / daughter who told each other 5 times per day that she loved each other. I always got the impression that neither really belived it, because their actions screamed the opposite. Contrast with my own mother where such words are seldom spoken, but ACTIONS have left zero doubt.

  • I can't believe the former husband fooled around Karen. She deserved better.

  • @sweetpea3339 What goes on in a marriage no one knows except the couple. I know they went to BoraBora for their homeymoon, and Karen called home and said BoraBora, no BoringBoring. I think things got off to a bad start from the beginning. This movie doesn't go into the depth about many things. No movie about a person tells the whole truth, and they can change things that never took place. Don't mind any errors in my spelling.

  • Here comes the controlling again. It's "her" marriage not theirs. She should have told them to Foff. Karen had more power than she realized. She could have said to Richard and everyone else. If you don't stop, at the end of this contract, I will not sing any more and there won't be any "Carpenters." I will walk out. Without her, they had nothing.

  • Damn she is being a biatch. The mom kinda reminded me of my mom, my mom stopped saying "i love you" to us after a certain age. When we ask her why, she say's that she rather show it then say it because sometimes words are lies. The difference between that bitch and my Mom, is that my mom actually shows it and doesn't try to control me. She lets me be me. Thats why I know that she loves me.

  • When he said "We've Only Just Begun" he knew exactly who she was.

  • @ileftbyheartbhind Duh, of course he did, he was kidding around, not making a big deal about her being a singer.

  • I just hope Richard went to Tom Burris's ass.

  • I think these songs are from her single album she made while Richard got back in shape.

  • They didn't use Tom Burris's real name.

  • Richard did become addicted. Karen did make a single album, but A&M studio did not like it. I was not her voice that they didn't like, but more about the selection of songs.

  • can some one please tell me what she said @ 6:27 ? she was crying and mumbled something i couldnt understand her....

  • @mrsluv78

Im Pretty sure she said " Im tearing up the family"

  • Perfect song selection for the scenes of her marriage.

  • Perfect song selection for scenes of her marriage.

  • I don't get it... did that guy know who she was or not? Cos he said "we've only just begun"... :S Anybody know?

  • She looks like Katy Perry at 2:10

  • Yuck What kinda juice was that at 7:55?

  • @mustange550 i think it is piss!

  • Wedding cakes always look so beautiful but they rarely taste good. I ought to know because I used to banquest waitress and we'd usually sneak a piece while we were cutting and wrapping the leftover cake in the kitchen. Only once or twice did I taste a wedding cake that I actually liked!

  • I'm sorry, but I don't know him when I see him, but which character is the REAL Richard Carpenter in this film?? When my sister and I used to watch this, I never knew that..I don't think she did either. Thanks!

  • @Msrjs078308 The real Richard Carpenter makes a cameo in the sound booth during one of the recording sequences.

  • Does anyone know the real story of why her marriage did not work?

  • @sweetpea3339 Tom lied about his vasectomy before the marraige, she found out soon before and wanted to call the wedding off, but her family told her "You've made your bed, now lie in it." Proably more concerned with what the neighbours thought than their daughter's emotional state. He also lied about his finances and drained her bank account regularly.

  • @zoemills242 Really? Wow! what an asshole!

  • can't believe how selfish her mother is being. for hell sakes just say you love her.

  • what is she saying at 6:30

  • Yeah, and Yoko claims she had never heard of the Beatles when she met John. Please. Vultures.

  • I've learnt you pay the insolence to your parents with the new generations of decadence... they'll pay much more maybe, but I don't care about it right now, It's time to taste that mellow a little bit... I mean, the respect.

  • Sometimes family is a piece of SHIT!

  • have you told her you love her?

we don't do things that way.

    well THERE's one major problem.

  • Something, about, can't enjoy having a famiy

  • Can anyone make out what she's saying at like 6:26 and she has her face in her hands and crying? Ive watched this movie so many times but I can never understands what she says after im sorry...

  • @M0r3Lik3HERthanME

"I'm sorry. I'm so lost I'm shouting at the family."

  • @M0r3Lik3HERthanME - I think she says "I'm trying to have a family", but I couldn't swear to that.

  • @M0r3Lik3HERthanME me too, i think maybe: "It's my life. I'm sorry, but I don't feel well..."

  • @M0r3Lik3HERthanME I think she said all I wanted was children and a family

  • @M0r3Lik3HERthanME Karen says.. "I just want to have a husband... and children.. and a family.." But the way that Cynthia is crying and hyperventalating its difficult to make out. when she says "husband" its barely half pronounced and the pitch of her voice on "children" and "family.." make it very hard to understand... Hope this helps..

  • "Bob Knight" was really Tom Burris who apparently took a lot of Karen's money.

  • The mom always plays such a good bitch. ...Nurse Ratchet or the grandma from Flowers and the Attack. I think she played a creepy bitch teacher also in an 80"s horror flick called Invaders from Mars.

  • You guys should stop bagging on her family, no offense. But families just want what is best for each other, so they try to help, it may not work and they might not realize it. Even though they could have been contributing factors to Karen's problems, they didn't mean to. How would you feel if someone bagged on your family? Just chill is all I am saying.

  • from Peru I love Karen Carpenters, gracias karen por tu musica...

  • I'm sure the person who wrote about her being 'chubby' in the paper felt horrible guilt the rest of his life after karen's death...serve him right!! >=(

  • that article about her being chubby never happened in Karen's real life it happened only in this film because they added it in. Richard was the one called chubby in a article but never Karen.

  • how do u no?

  • @tbolton No honey I think you are missing the point, look at the mother !!!! OMG !! If I had a mother like that I;d rather to comite suicide !!!! She is so controler and manipulated !!! So discusting !!! besides people that suffer that dont necessary needs to recibe critics about the weight

  • actually, it was inaccurate, and there was an article about richard being such. the movie is mostly accurate, but some parts are not.

  • all the same, even though much of the movie is innacurate or misportrayed, it's devastating that she did experience a lot of grief and insecurity in her life. She truly was a beautiful person =[

  • She really had a bad hang up about being fat this why people need to stop being cruel and the guy who wrote that about her should be ashamed of himself !

  • :D lalalalla i love thisss <333

  • i really don't like her parents, and her brother seems very comforting.

  • her mum was too much of a control freak. She didn't like someone else helping her daughter, I think she thought if she just told Karen what to do then everything would work out. Her mum never listened or learned anything, I think she was a major part of the problem. Parents can do so much damage, even when they believe they are just doing things out of love

  • her family is soooo stupid.

  • the doctor looks like the one in "The Best Little Girl In The World"

  • I love this movie! You know what, though? It would probablyy have been better if Richard had played himself

  • I like "This Masquerade."

  • 8:55 Agnes was being a total biotch, he was just trying 2 b nice and personal!

  • If I hear eating disorders are about control im going to choke someone. I know they are a major part of them because I suffer from one. But, I feel doctors just use it to sum it up and don't look further into it.

  • Just wanted to say that I am a recovered anorexic and bulimic and I can tell you that eating disorders while having alot of different facets do in fact boil down to being a control issue.. or lack there of.. when I was in my own anorexic shell I felt that I had no control over my life and the events around me but I could control what went into my body... Ironically... In the end I had to relearn how to take care of myself and how to eat properly too

  • @burntcoffeebeans I think ED is about control BUT not only control... there are so many underlying factors that some doctors may not want to delve into... whether its laziness or just the touchiness of the subject or misunderstanding, that is what is to be determined

  • He ain't really playing piano either! lol! Jeez!

  • That mother would drive anyone into a great need for therapy, she is a major pain. She is the true meaning of a long distance relationship.

  • @lemonadesqueeze71 LOL @ THE LONG-DISTANCE RELATIONSHIP COMMENT! I give it to Louis Fletcher tho. I can't imgaine anyone else playing that part but her. I think ONLY one or two movies I've liked her in!! Well, the character she was playing.

  • The mother needs a great big kick in the cunt. She's the problem and in denial.

  • was karen conftable with sex.... i know that question sounds so odd!!! lol but im so intrigued by her life and her as a person.. i would like to know eveything about her you see lol:)

  • Honestly, I don't even know if what they said about her in ETrueHollywood Story was all true about her multiple relationships, but I wouldn't doubt that she was in love with her husband that's why she married him even if she was on the road all the time. It's probably the long and constant separation that must've driven them apart.

  • I can see your point though. It's odd but I kinda understand what you mean....

  • I know you posted this a long time ago but there is a book about her life I think it's an autobiography I read it a few years ago it's very good.

  • " The Carpenters: The Untold Story..." By Ray Coleman...

  • very odd question. I'm afraid I can't answer it, because I don't know what conftable means.

  • i ment comftable.. like if she liked sex.. because people with anorexia are like so week their not interested in boyfriends and sex.. so im asking did she like it?

  • That bitch of the mother...I would kick her...

  • corniest pickup line in the world. he didn't deserve karen and was a complete ass at her funeral by throwing the ring in the casket

  • That mother is so unbelievable. Her daughter is dying of an eating disorder and all she can do is get defensive *for no reason* and start chewing out the psychiatrist.

  • Richard Carpenter, who assisted with this production, appears in the control booth, beginning at 3:35.

  • very tough to watch this..your heart breaks for her!

  • That mom reminds me of my grandma. I never experienced her past the age of like six or something but stories my mother told me once I got older. She sounds like a harsh mixture between Agnes, and the mother in Carrie.

    Literally.

  • I love Karen's voice so much. It's not dramatic or overdone, just straightforward and beautiful.

  • She's not used to people half her age addressing her by her first name? God her daughter is dieing, I think how someone addresses her should be the least of her worries

  • I hate Agnes. Well, the movie Agnes.

  • @mexicanmayhem07 Im not making excuses for her, I can't stand how she treated Karen, but she was talking about a respect thing with the doctor. He was acting like he knew the family and she resented that, calling her by her first name was condescending to her.

  • Wow! That flute guy was really diggin that!

  • they traveled three thousand miles just for a nonsense?!!!,..is she in her mind when she's saying this, it was not a nonsense, it could help her daughter a lot...

  • is it her fault why they have to be divorced?..I believe, she deserve to have a family,.. but that didn't happened..

  • omg the mom is like my mom

  • this is the best movie ive ever watch!!!!!

  • alright let's not go THAT far now lol..

  • cake!

    mmm

    I'm hungry now

  • wow, not everyone has such an amazing sibling/brother.

  • I know!.

I like him but it gets creepy sometimes

  • there was so little known about eating disorders at that time-it is important to know that not only is the anorexic sick but the family system also needs help.

  • I guess her death was a combonation of several of things. The most important thing is. Is to learn from this example and try not to let it happen again to someone else

  • Her mother is really selfish... And I would like so much to have a big brother like Richard, he is so nice and sweet! Instead of being the big sister who needs to protect, I would rather wish to be the smaller one, protected and loved. I think it is a part of my reasons to be anorexic.

  • hey that line where he says "do u think i can get u to sing for me some time..is that lifted from grand hotel where he says to Joan Crawford.."If youre a stenographer can i get you to do some dictation for me sometime??

  • Karen's husbands name was Tom Burris in real life.. Not Bob Knight..

  • Karen Carpenter's mother was a heartless bitch! No doubt part of the reason that beautiful spirit left this earth so soon.

  • I don't like her either.
