One thing I never noticed: Mariah doesn't seem to be communicating to the listener when she sings. It's like the song is mechanically complete, but spiritually vacuous. Diana's version is utterly haunting. Ross doesn't try for any perfection of pitch or other mechanics. Ross is a more natural singer. I feel no connection between Mariah and her listeners.
Just an observation related to this song. Why is it that our most popular performers over the past 15 years or so butchered so many great songs. Yes, I said butcher in the sense that she (and others) are utterly incapable of just singing the song as intended. Why must every piece be seen as a venue to "show off" the voices? When Diana Ross put this song on the map she understood the song was not about her drowing it out. Comparitively speaking, this is unlistenable.
She is an amazing singer, as well she's one of the worst at lipsync xD She smiles and doesn't even try to seem convincing! By the way I love this rendition of the song <3

Diana Ross's version is definitely better. Diana performed her songs with the Supremes and by herself during the 60s and 70s when music was far better than the 90s and beyond when Mariah performed. I believe that Madonna and Mariah are the two top selling female vocalist internationally but that does not mean they were more popular than Diana. They had a lot less good competition and alot more people to buy their music.

Quite good, but a little too breathless which means that she actually misses what an anthem this piece is. It seems like fluff, but when you really listen to the song, you realize that this is a strong strong woman embarking on the unknown with great chances of failing, but going for her dream all the same. It is really an uplifting song and not at all fluff.

I have never heard this song before! And I went and heard J.Lo's version sounded like crap! Diana's, even though she is the original, her voice is nothing special to my ears! Mariah sang it the best! If this was a competition Mariah would win hands down! And the last whistle notes AMAZING!! :)

I agree, Diana Ross is amazing... This is definitely her song, just like All I Want For Christmas CANNOT be sung by any other artist than Mariah herself. I find that songs belong to the ones who sung them originally... :p However, Mariah did a good job. Love the whistles at the end. <3

The RIAA (THEY certify album sales) list Barbra as the number one selling female artist, followed by Madonna THEN MC. The only record she really holds is her 18 number 1's. Diana Ross matches that if you count her 12 #1 songs w/The Supremes (Hey, MC didn't sing 'One Sweet Day' alone ya know....)

Quite good, but a little too breathless which means that she actually misses what an anthem this piece is. It seems like fluff, but when you really listen to the song, you realize that this is a strong strong woman embarking on the unknown with great chances of failing, but going for her dream all the same. It is really an uplifting song and not at all fluff.
