The biggest bullshit of the Nazi/VC matchup was that the VC almost never engaged US forces in direct combat, unless they were attacked directly by the US forces. They relied on ambushes and guerilla warfare, and they only did so when the odds of success were extremely high. The Waffen SS relied on direct assaults. Of course a fighting force of rice farmers who can't hit the broad side of a barn are going to lose to the force that conquered most of Europe in less than 2 years.

Vietcong had the advantage of home terrain, but thats it. They fought a force of american agressors. While Nazi Waffen SS fought a conquering war, they waged war across entire Europe. Took England, US, France, Russia and other smaller countries who joined in to take them down. And that says a lot. So, in conclusion, you may not like it, but the Nazi military was IMO one of the greatest and deadliest armies of all time. Sending the Vietcong against them was like sending in a peasant with a stick.

Alexander the Great and Sun Tzu were great strategists, tent generals, but neither I think were great warriors. Attila the Hun is a completely different story. I enjoy the history of both men (Alex and Attila), but I'm not too interested in victories. I speculate Attila will win. While I like the Viet Cong, the Nazi SS were better trained, and I think deserve a win; the Viet Cong was hardly a military force.

I got Huns and Mongols mixed up initially as well. Now Ghengis Khan is the only conqueror I'd put above Alexander with any real certainty. Atilla the Hun really doesn't compare though, in my opinion. The defeat of the Scythians at Jaxartes probably demonstrates very well what would happen if Alexander ran into the Huns. One on one though, I think it will be Atilla. Mounted horse archery just seems impossible to beat, one on one.

@papagamias That may be true, but each time Attila gets a kill with the bow, no other fights, mid-range, short range, etc. are done. If Attila got 100 kills with his bow the first 100 times, he scores 100 to 0 because the other fights at closer distance are nullified. Also, while Alexander was 13, he was learning philosophy, maybe combat training on the side a little. When Attila was 13, he was learning how to kill people and make weapons, and nothing else.

Alexander was ALWAYS in the front line either on his horse or on foot - even on sieges he had climbed up a ladder when all of his men were quit afraid. He had more wounds than his average front line soldier and he actually died of him getting weak out of them.
